Charles Mound Closed for the Winter

November 28 2001 at 12:42 AM

Jean asked me to post this notice.

John,
Tell folks that Charles Mound will be closed until March 31st. Once the snows hit(which could be any minute now), the road is really not passable.  We hate to see people drive all the way here and then not be able to get up there. We also hate to spend our days digging people out!

Also - this coming weekend is shot gun deer hunting season. Absolutely no people can be walking around our property....there will be about 15 hunters there!

Thanks...and Happy Holidays!

slight problem there

January 23 2002, 10:40 AM

Although the main reason for closure is the impact around the house, this is private property. There may be little impact by approaching from another direction, but the owners have requested that we, as Highpointers, not be there. We should respect their wishes.

Visiting the Illinois HP

November 17 2003, 8:57 PM

I may be on vacation in June (the 23rd) driving in from Iowa (this HP was added earlier in the week). Will I be able to add Illinois to my growing list HP's?

Too many damn Marks around here. We should start our own club within the Highpointers Club. If you check out the access issues icon on highpointers.org and go to Illinois, it explains that access is now restricted to the first weekends in June, July, August and September each year and that you also have to contact the Wuebbels in advance and request permission. Apparently, they want only legit HPers on their property ... no tourists.

ok, well that link is baloney, but how about arranging an all-Mark assault on a highpoint of note? Maybe Boundary Peak?

Why is it?

November 19 2003, 12:37 PM

Why is it that Charles has his own Mound; Timm has his own Hill; Roger, Mitchell and Davis all have their own Mounts; Humphrey has his own Peak; but, yet somehow, Mark has nothing? This seems profoundly unfair! Not only do I suggest a group Mark trip, but I think we should take a highpoint by force, rename it in our honor and place the appropriate Mark BenchMark on top. Who's in?

Your Own Words Betray You!

November 19 2003, 4:08 PM

As you just pointed out, there are more "Marks" than any other name on peaks (at least in the USA), because so many of them have bench MARKS! And places like the Ohio HP even have a bench to go with the bench MARK! Indeed, you have even more notations on maps that include your initial (BM, VABM, etc.). How often do you see "JES" anywhere? I'm the one who should be complaining, not you! Of course, BM also stands for other things (Ballistic Missile comes to mind), but we won't go there. So, quit complaining, OK? (Tongue now removed from cheek.) JES

dismayed

June 29 2006, 1:09 PM

I traveled many miles to the high point. I spent 20 years in the military, protecting your freedom and took the year off to travel. I drove up to the high point only to find out it is closed. I find this to be sad. Here is something that people can not access. Yes, there might be others out there that mistreat our great country, but for the most part, most (90%) keep our trash picked up and do not bother people. Maybe you can learn from the Kansas and Nebraska high points which are on private property. They still allow access. In Kansas they ask for donations, which from what I could see, most people donate. It is sad to see our great country locked up and hiddened away. I will not come back to this state because of this.

When did you try to go? It is open this weekend July 1-2. I appreciate that they are allowing highpointers to traipse across their private property 3 weekends a year.

Another thing you protected during your 20 years in the military were people's private property rights. Believe me, you wouldn't want that taken from you.

so were you not aware of the regulation?
it's in all the guidebooks.. on the web sites.. on wikipedia..
You do do research before you walk onto a highpoint that's on somebody's front lawn, don't you?

Why pull up a thread from 2001/2003?

June 29 2006, 4:32 PM

Ironically there are two current threads regarding the Illinois HP, both of which appear on the 'front' page as I view this site. One even includes a note from the landowners and includes time and date information. Instead you found an old thread that last gasped air in 2003 and is woefully out of date? How could you have missed the current threads? Were you trying to?

I can think of lots of good reasons to not go to Illinois, but being barred from the HP is not one of them. Find another hobby!

Sadness...

June 29 2006, 5:47 PM

I, for one (unless I am hearing the voices, then it is "I, for many"), appreciate the fact that the Wuebbels (sp) allow us on the land at all...free of charge, too. I just got done paying $150 to climb two Colorado peaks on my "list" a couple of weekends ago, and I know other highpoint owners have charged fees in the past. A little planning goes a long way.

Pay to Climb

July 1 2006, 4:55 PM

Which peaks in Colorado did you pay $150 to climb? To whom? Most of our mountains are free.

I assume...

July 1 2006, 5:16 PM

My guess on the $150 fee to get access through a ranch to climb some Colorado Peaks:  Culebra (a 14er) and Red Mtn (one of the "centennials" -- 100 highest in Colorado).  Both were off-limits entirely for several years; both have cost money to access for a very long time, but the fees now are far higher than they were when I climbed them close to 20 years ago.

How was my guess?

We have a winner

It was indeed Culebra, with Red Moutnain thrown in as dessert. Fun climb, though.

Re: dismayed

July 2 2006, 1:19 AM

We reached the top of Charles Mound on Saturday, July 1st. (HP #16) It was a nice day and we had a fun hike. We met several other highpointers from all over the US and enjoyed visiting with them. One party we talked to was hiking the highpoints in order of elevation lowest to highest. Charles Mound was #6 for them. Thanks much to the Wuebbels for granting access to their private property on this weekend! I for one greatly appreciate it.
