2 of the 3 core members of Team Highpoint made it to the summit of Whitney this past Friday. A large group set out from Whitney Portal in the wee, wee, wee hours of the morning (I believe it was around 2 AM), and most reached the summit after climbing in very snowy conditions. The 2 members officially on "Team Highpoint" (the small group planning on going to all 50 Highpoints) reached the top within 60 seconds of the first of the separate group that climbed via the Mountaineers Route. The Mountaineers Route group was led by Conrad Ankor and Peter Croft, and I believe that entire group all summited (and there were quite a few climbers in that group as well).
The slowest group of climbers (on the standard route) didn't make it back to the trailhead until 11 PM -- truely a marathon day for them! However, even the members of this group showed up at breakfast at the motel back in Bishop with smiling faces and were eager to join Team Highpoint for additional hikes.
Team Highpoint and friends are climbing Boundary today, and have carefully studied with me and discussed the route NOT to take down the mountain.
I really enjoyed meeting some extraordinary climbers on this trip, but I was NOT sorry to have missed out on a 21 hour day of hiking!
