GOVERNMENT CAMP, OR -- As weather-weary teams on
Mount Hood begin another day of low-elevation searching for three climbers missing since Saturday, there is new information about cell phone contact and a note that Kelly James, Jerry Cooke and Brian Hall left before beginning their climb.
The Hood River Sheriff's office now says they cannot confirm that Kelly James tried to make a 9-1-1 call Monday morning from where he has been trapped in a snow cave near the summit since Saturday. The phone was turned on Monday long enough to get a satellite position reading.
"Hood River 9-1-1 sent a text message to the phone saying "call 911." The text message was received by the phone, but the message was not opened. It may be possible that text was mistaken as a call, but it is unknown at this time," a release from the sheriff's office said.
