Woman and three kids rescued after spending night above timberline in Colorado mountains

October 4 2006, 3:56 AM

ASPEN - Snow poured down and applause roared as a woman and three children were reunited with anxious family members at the Lost Man trailhead Tuesday afternoon, following a night out above timberline in a freezing storm.

Stephanie Sakson, 48; her daughter, Andra; schoolmates Jillian Wentzel and Matt Palomino, all 9 years old; and a Jack Russell terrier named Nik became disoriented while hiking the Lost Man Loop Trail Monday afternoon east of Aspen near Independence Pass.

The children hugged their parents and cuddled in blankets as they were taken away to be treated at Aspen Valley Hospital. None suffered any serious injuries.

Man falls to his death on Camelback Mountain in Phoenix

October 11 2006, 1:42 PM

PHOENIX - A Phoenix police and fire department rescue and emergency medical team this morning recovered the body of a man who fell to his death on Camelback Mountain.

Police say the body is that of a 29-year-old Jose Luis Avilla Puertas, of Phoenix, who went hiking on the mountain Sunday.

Phoenix police spokesman Joel Tranter said Puertas left his home early Sunday and when he did not return home later in the day his brother went looking for him. The brother found the truck in a parking lot near the trailhead in the part of the mountain known as Echo Canyon and called authorities.

Snow, wind frustrate search for search for climbers on Mount Hood

December 15 2006, 1:41 AM

GOVERNMENT CAMP, OR -- As weather-weary teams on Mount Hood begin another day of low-elevation searching for three climbers missing since Saturday, there is new information about cell phone contact and a note that Kelly James, Jerry Cooke and Brian Hall left before beginning their climb.

The Hood River Sheriff's office now says they cannot confirm that Kelly James tried to make a 9-1-1 call Monday morning from where he has been trapped in a snow cave near the summit since Saturday. The phone was turned on Monday long enough to get a satellite position reading.

"Hood River 9-1-1 sent a text message to the phone saying "call 911." The text message was received by the phone, but the message was not opened. It may be possible that text was mistaken as a call, but it is unknown at this time," a release from the sheriff's office said.

Body of climber found on Mount Hood

December 18 2006, 10:47 PM

MOUNT HOOD - Searchers found a waterlogged cell phone on the body of a climber located Sunday afternoon in a snow cave, as well as identification suggesting the body is that of Texan Kelly James, 48, the Hood River County sheriff told The Oregonian this morning.

The phone was found in the climber's pocket. Searchers found a wallet on the body and recovered identification that "suggested" it was James, said Sheriff Joe Wampler.
