LAKE CITY, FL - About 250 homes in Columbia and Hamilton counties were under a new mandatory evacuation tonight as the massive Bugaboo wildfire moved west toward U.S. 441, a Columbia County official said.

About 570 other homes in Columbia County had previously been evacuated before the new orders came shortly before 6 p.m., said Harvey Campbell, the county's public information officer.

Campbell said the orders for homes along and near the Suwannee River were made as a precaution, though the fire remained several miles east of U.S. 441.

Two major Florida interstates re-opened intermittently Monday, and firefighters were able to attack the massive blaze from the air for the first time even as they worried about gusty winds and dry conditions heightening the danger.

Public safety officials had been bracing for the prospect of evacuating hundreds of homes along the river throughout the day.
