for the best deal on an air rifle. From what I have been able to tell, the Winchester 1000SX and the Daisy 1000S is the same gun. I realize that in the Winchester version you have a choice between a wood stock and synthetic stock, but it looks like basically they are the same gun.

I've looked at the Winchester guns at Bass Pro Shop. The only one that was on display was the wood stock gun. I'm wondering why the wood version is $10.00 cheaper than the synthetic version? Also why is the Wally World version (synthetic I believe), is like $40.00 cheaper. I suppose it could be explained by the difference in the Winchester vs the Daisy name, but if they are one and the same gun then it really doesn't matter does it.

Any advice or comments from the members of this forum are welcomed. I'm going to make the purchase pretty quickly and want to be sure I'm making the wisest choice I can so please respond.

Thanks and it's good to be a member of the forum.

should be no performance difference to the guns, except perhaps weight.
the wood probably weighs more.

for aesthetics, i prefer the wood, and mine is a beautiful turkish walnut. the greater weight is often preferred with these heavier springers as well. but what is your use? if you live in a rainy/damp place and know you'll be out in the weather with it, some folks prefer the synthetic.

any other reasons to chose one v the other?

My opinion for choosing

I think the number one reason BY FAR is how the gun looks.  But defenetly, usage is number two.  If you are gonna be out in the woods a lot, you can easily scratch a beautiful woodjob, and it will defenelty hurt you more than scratching a synthetic finish.  Synthetic is also considerably lighter, which means you will not get as tired in the field from carrying a gun, but it also means less mass, and thus, more recoil.  Wood finish also tend to require more care if you want to maintain the top quality finish, wereas a synthetic scope you can only give the bare minimum of maintenace.  Synthetics also tend to camouflage better (especially at night), as they are not so shiny as a finished wood stock (the glare from the stock can give you away in a hurry!).  Other than that, I cant think of anything else...

Either way, if you plan to use the gun for hunting, I do strongly recommend that you buy and attach a sling.  Trust me, carrying a gun around will wear you out with time, regardless if its the lighter synthetic or the heavier wood.
