I had apart both a 1000X and a 800X laying side by side, and the ONLY difference is the 800X does NOT have a top hat installed. They have the same spring installed, just missing the top hat in the 800X.

So if you want to turn your 800X into a 1000X just make a top hat and install it, and you now have a 1000X rifle.

I have the specs if you need them to make a top hat. Just a short piec of 3/4 inch round bar will make the part.

800-1000X conversion

No score for this post
June 4 2006, 4:17 PM

hey rich that is interesting. thanks! I wonder if that means we can also down-convert our 1000X to an 800X? is the cocking force any easier with the 800X? If you still have these two together, can you notice a difference?

please do post the specs, and if you have any photos, links to them as well would be great!

regards - scottmi

I don't mean to sound stupid but here goes...When I install this Tophat, it will make my X800 a 1000-fps air rifle?? I can make these top hats at work with ease. And is the instalation process difficult, I dont know exactly where to install it? anything I should beware of? if you could post a pic of the aprox location it would be very helpful.

thanks in advance

Sure, as long as I dont have to pay for shipping. and providing we all could get detailed installation instructions I Could have my machine shop make few per week that would be no problem at all.

I am going to have 3-made by end of the day tommorrow, as far as location of the top hat, I can probably figure it out but I just don't want to screw up the rifle...I was just kind of hoping for a little illustration as a guide. Also does anybody know how how hard it is to lighten up the trigger on the winchester 800X turkish models.....the poundage is a little heavy say the least. I don't have a clue why they would do that!!

Thanks

Thanks, I found the guide for the trigger rework! very detailed. I do have a question...what is the difference between a 2-stage trigger and a regular trigger? Can I do the trigger rework without adding the 2-stage pin/screw?? Also is there a guide for installing the tophat into the 800X?

Trigger second stage...

No score for this post
June 19 2006, 2:38 PM

You can leave out the second stage screw if you prefer to and the trigger will be improved.
A single stage is simply one long pull and then the gun fires. With a two stage, you have a mid length fist pull before you feel the added resistance of the second stage. Once you apply pressure at the second stage, the gun is firing. It really is a matter of preferance.

To install the tophat do the following...
1. remove the action from the stock (2 screws in forend and rear trigger guard screw)
2. remove the safety lever pivot screw (very small at the back of the guide)
3. pivot the safety lever out of the way of the guide and remove rear trigger group screw (secures trigger group to action, leave group in place)
4. using spring compressor, push guide inward slightly until retaining pin is loose
5. remove retaining pin
6. remove guide and mainspring
7. install top-hat in piston then reverse proceedure

WOW!! it's complete!! 800X to 1000X

June 23 2006, 8:25 PM

I just finished the full modifications on my 800X..or should I say 1000X now :o) The trigger is very smooth and 100 times easier!! the tophat installation was a breeze after I figured out what I was doing wrong!! It wouldn't cock at first but I figured out that after I assembled the trigger I was trying to cock it while the trigger was already cocked!! duh! But with that said is it normal for the first few shots to smoke like a .22 caliber shot? it was as loud as a .22 caliber shot also! but I think after a few shots it was already starting to quite down a bit. My wife thought that I broke out my .22 remington. I am going to hold off on shooting this until I get a responce from Russ or Rich. anyway's I just want to thank everyone here for your information, know how and most of all your patience. And now that I have completed this modification I will be more than happy to share any info that I can. The little tricks like putting a short 3/16 piece in the trigger asm was brilliant! I can go on an on all night but I wont. once again thank you all it was alot of fun! I cant wait to do some shooting!

P.S. The 3 tophats are complete, I left them at work and I'm on vacation until 7-5-06!! I can pick them up on monday, I just need your name & address so I can ship them: my email is, barbier42@comcast.net

Just keep shooting it, it will burn off the oil in 25 or so shots, with the added power it is dieseling now but it will go away.

Assembling the trigger is a bunch nicer with the little stub pin ain't it.

Glad everything turned out so good, enjoy yer new rifle.

Also whet pellets are you shooting in the new 1000X ?

I have found that crossman preimiers seem to get the best groups at any yardage, round nose NOT the pointed. Never have had any luck with any pointyed pellet so far.

Feeld and targwe Specials work also, a little heaver pellet and it hits alot harder, superdomes work good also.

You will almost always get a little dieseling after a tune...

But like Rich said, just shoot it out.  It should go away after a few shots.  Good work on the conversion.  Just out of curiosity, what material did you decide for the top hats?  Stainless steel (if so, which alloy?) or Naval Brass 464?  As for the pellets, my gun likes Superdomes the most...

For my gun I just used some cold rolled bar stock that I had lying around the shop...but the other ones are made out of stainless not sure on the details but it's from a propeller shaft. The dieseling is getting less and less with each shot! I just have to re-sight the scope and I'll be all set..I was getting quarter size groups at about 30 yards before the modification. I have been shooting domed pellets 7.88grn...and wad cutters. I think I'm going to try a little heavier pellet, maybe an 8.8grn round nose? any suggestions...I mainley target shoot but occasionaly take out a few birds or pests/rodents...squirrels, raccoons.

I like RWS superdomes or Gamo hunters in most of my guns. I would think twice about a raccons with a .177, Unless you where able place a clean head shot. What I would do is buy another air rifle .22 of course...Take a look a RWS 94, great gun in .22cal or the B26, B26-2.
I sent you mail about the tophat.
Thanks

My 1000X really likes RWS Superdomes; for hollow points, it shoots the RWS Super-H-Points really well.

I modified a Gamo Shadow 1000 with a James Maccari spring, Apex Seal and a custom made top-hat (I made mine out of 464 Naval Brass, as per Charlie da Tuna's suggestion), and that gun likes Beeman FTS (Field Target Specials) better than the Superdomes.  It also likes Crow Mags better than the Super-H-Point.  I mention this because the power of the Turkish gun is more like the power I get from my shadow than the power I get from the 1000X (around 900 FPS with the FTS; about 950 with the Crow Mags, if I remember correctly).
