Cocking effort on winchester 1000 is pretty hard, especially if it's not broken in yet. You'll need to shoot a couple hundred pellets or more to smooth it out. As for being loud, it's probably dieseling. Look in the barrel after a shot, if you see a lot of smoke, it does diesel. When it diesels there is higher pressure in the chamber and pellets can go over the sound barrier and you hear a loud crack. If you are inclined, you could disassemble it and clean and lube properly. If not, just keep shooting it. It's better to use heavier pellets (at 10.5 gr) to get rid of dieseling sooner. Heavier pellets will also shoot at lower velocities, thus sound barrier is less likely to be exceeded with the dieseling effect.

Hi Jerry

I just got a 1000s from Walmart 3 days ago. When I first tried to cock it, I thought the barrel was stuck shut. I finally decided to force it by laying the gun, sites up, across my knees and placing a rag on the barrel and hitting the barrel with the palm of my hand. It broke loose and then I could cock it. I have broken it loose and just sat and worked the barrel around the pivot point for several minutes several times a day. I think it is getting easier to break open but if it is closed as after firing it, I still have to put it across my knees or on a chair bottom and strike the barrel in order to break it loose.

I called Daisy this morning and the tech lady who answered told me there was a kind of positive locking mechanism to hold the barrel closed and it was going to be hard to begin the cocking process. I've been tempted to take mine back to Wmart and get another one but she said it would probably be same way. I guess we'll just have to work the action a lot and maybe it will open up easier. But you know--I wouldn't want it to open too easily.

This is my first break barrel air gun (1st air gun since my Red Rider) so I don't know if the higher priced ones are machined better and open easier or not.

This doesn't help the problem, but I hope it helps your feelings.

The gun is accurate and very powerful though and trigger pull is not a problem for me.

Charlie

The barrel lock-up is tight on all of these so getting another won't cure that.

The best way to unlock the barrel is to slap it with the palm of your hand. One thing that does help is to disassemble the pivot and lubricate it with some moly paste lubricant. Keep in mind that one of the reasons this gun is accurate is because it keeps the barrel locked solid when closed.
