Wood vs. synthetic is entirely up to preference. Needless to say the wood is going to be a bit nicer in terms of sounds and balance but some prefer the black synthetic. Do NOT use a regular rifle scope of any sort on this gun. It requires scopes that are airgun "rated" in order to survive the recoil. One of the better ones for the money is the Tasco Golden Antler if you can find it. Also get a good one piece mount as mentioned in one of the following posts or you will be chasing that scope down the rail.

I'll second Russ's suggestion of the Tasco Golden Antler. I have a couple of 3-9X32 AO Golden Antlers that I got from Optics Planet. It's a strong, light scope at a reasonable price.

They also sell a 3-9X40 Golden Antler, but it doesn't have the adjustable objective (AO) for parallax correction at shorter distances, so I don't know if it would be useful on airguns.
