British actress Keira Knightley met with Maybury to discuss the role of Jackie in the film. She was fighting through a nasty case of food poisoning, so unfortunately, she spent most of the meeting trying not to projectile vomit.
Maybury told her he didn't think she was right for the role and that he didn't want her. At that point, Knightley, desperate, felt she had nothing to lose. She declared that if she didn't get the part of Jackie she might be stuck in corsets for the next 20 years and begged him to let her read for the part. He agreed, and promised if he was convinced, that he would hire her.
She read for the part, he gave her some notes and his phone number and then offered her the job.
She gives partial credit for getting the role to the fact that she looked liked Hell warmed over due to the food poisoning. The look was perfect for the wounded Jackie.
