'Old Trots unite!'??
Is Ron Bellamy seriously asking us to believe that SL were members of the Trotskyite community?
This sounds like the politically illiterate nonsense that the real Bellamy used to come out with. Along with his gem that the surest evidence of factionalism was the very absence of such evidence! It must have seemed like a dialectical argument in his addled mind at the time. Very sad.
Mary Davis joined the CPB at re-establishment in 1988, and the CCG before that if my memory serves me right. Ditto John Foster. Yet both were subsequently labelled Straight Left by the Hicks-Rosser faction. In Foster's case, that public allegation by Hicks at the Executive Committee helped turn him at the last minute into a supporter of Richard Maybin's challenge to Hicks for the general secretaryship. Poor old Mike had miscalculated or been misled again, not realising that Foster was about to give him the benefit of the doubt until the allegation was made during the election debate.
Things have moved on a little since. I think after 20 years, not only have any 'links' between SA and SL on the one hand, and Mary Davis and John Foster on the other, changed somewhat. SA has also changed (becoming much smaller, narrower and more sectarian) and so have SL (disintegration).
Carol Turner's decision to leave SA and, some years later, to join the CPB indicates the shifting fortunes and approaches of those two organisations.
Only a remnant of the Hicks-Rosser rump could regard her presence on the CPB EC alongside Davis, Foster, Murray and Stevenson as evidence of old Trots uniting.
And was it not the Hicks-Rosser faction itself which colluded with SA to keep Editor John Haylett off the Morning Star Management Committee while getting SA supporters elected? It's a bit rich for 'Ron Bellamy', the real or imagined one, to be having a go at real or imagined Trot influence in the CPB today.
