I remember that some decades ago the Seamen's union argued that sailors' lives were put at risk because too many ships were rust hulks, and campaigned for stricter standards to be enforced. As a side issue, it was argued that such a policy would force more new ships to be bought - or old ones to be reconditioned. Does anyone know if the NUS is still campaigning on this issue? To enforce it there would have to be a clampdown on flags of convenience of course. |
