This is a little unfair. Trade(though state managed and in many cases poorly thought out) and attempts to specialise (albeit not along the lines of comparative advantage) were attempted at least within the Soviet sphere and Jugoslavia.

Autarky was really a feature of the more violently xenophobic regimes (Albania, Romania, North Korea).
