Question about sitting...

we are working with Jackson (7 months) on non-supported sitting (with his hands in front of him), but he constantly wants to throw himself backwards. Though when he does this and ends up on his back, he just wants right back up again...When I am holding him, low at the waist, he will sit and play with his toys, but the second I remove my hands and try to work his hands forward - back he goes...

Any ideas to encourage him to place his hands in front of him rather than behind him?

Thanks in advance!!!

Felicia and Jackson

Sarah did the same thing...

She did it before she learned to sit supported by her hands & even after, when she was learning to sit unsupported. I think it's just the way the kids learn how to control their stomach & back muscles to help them sit up. Holding Jackson's hips while he's sitting helps him train his stomach & back muscles to work in conjunction to sit upright without support. Keep doing it! If you have a Boppy or even some pillows on the sides & behind him, in case he throws himself backwards, that will help him also. I thought Sarah was the only one who seemed a glutton for punishment with throwing herself backward.

bobby pillow - great idea - Thanks!!! I think I will try this out and see if this helps...of course, when he is on the bed and he throws himself backwards and lands on the soft surface, he thinks it is hysterical!!!

Thanks for the input!!

PS - When did Sarah begin sitting?

Oh yes, Sarah got great enjoyment...

out of doing that. She thought it was the funniest thing. Sarah started sitting supported at about 6 1/2 months, and then sitting unsupported at about 7 1/2 months. We had bought her an Exersaucer at 6 months, which I really think helped her trunk muscles. I know some ppl don't recommend them for our kids, but I think in moderation, they really help. Sarah still loves hers at 11 months. It's also a walker, that goes in circles. She hasn't started doing that on purpose yet, if she moves her feet & the thing moves, she doesn't really notice.
Glad I could help!!

The one you pump up and the it sits on the floor and spins around... Mikey was fascinated with it... just fascinated enough to sit leaning forward propped on his hands while he watched it spin around and around. So we used the distraction method even then - LOL.

Jackson seems to be motivated by toys which provide a lot of stimulation...we will have to try this one!

Thanks!
