We are a group of friends who have come together because we share the common bond of caring for someone who has Trisomy 21. We are here to share therapy tips, medical issues, laughs, accomplishments and yes, even frustrations. We embrace what Trisomy 21 has brought into our lives. We feel that it has taught us to appreciate the true meaning of life. We count our children as blessings! We will fiercely protect them and fight for their lives to be valued just as all other peoples' are. We share our pictures, our stories and our hearts here not only to provide friendship and support for each other, but also in the hopes that others will open their minds and their hearts to our unique children and, in turn, make a better world for everyone.

Crawling problem

We are having trouble with our 18 month old daughter's crawling- she will only crawl with her right leg held straight out to the side(for balance, I think), and her left leg tucked under her. When I correct her, she gives up and cries. Has anyone else had this problem?

My son crawled with one leg up and the other tucked underneath him...

it made the transition to sitting so much easier for him, and I think that is why he did it. We'd just about given up on him crawling anyway and were just working on walking, so we were thrilled with any kind. I thought he would progress to full quadraped, but he never did. He is three now, and sometimes he will still crawl to get something if it's close and he doesn't want to stand up and walk over to it - he's always gauging what is easiest LOL Sometimes he crawls on both knees, and sometimes he still crawls with that knee up It did make the one leg stronger, but, he still learned to walk just fine We tried and tried to get him to crawl on both knees and he fought it, so we got to the point that we just let him crawl how he wanted.

So - not much advice, but I think it is quite common for kids w/T21 to tweak their crawls - so you are not alone

Sarah, 15 months, is just starting to do this...

It's like she uses her foot on the leg that's stretched out to propel herself forward. I'm hoping that she'll progress to the "typical" crawling stance, but since she's just beginning this, I'm not expecting it for a little while. I do try to correct her if I'm nearby and able to, most of the time she just plops back on her bottom when I do. I'll be checking back for any tips!!

Tristan 17 months crawls like this too...

July 16 2005, 7:07 PM

I think he does it because it relieves the pressure off his knee joints. My Daughter crawled like this too, so it is not strictly a T21 issue. Tristan is now beginning to walk and this crawling has not affected him in any negative ways that I'm aware of anyway. Sorry I have no advice I just left him to crawl however he wanted.
bye have a great day
Kari
