Hi Alan

Thanks the info. Sobering.

The possibility of chronic wear/failure in the handbrake mechanism combined with lack of a transmission lock (as found in conventional automatics) is the Achilles heel of the RM.

I have never been happy to leave ours on just the h/b and routinely chock the wheels of RML2603, even on the completely flat floor of the RV building in which she resides. The advantage, apart from the 'belt and braces' aspect, is that the h/b does not have to be fully applied, thus minimising the possibility of problems releasing the brakes after a long period of inactivity. happy.gif

Thanks John,

It occurred to me that others might now look hard at their handbrake wear and how they operate it. This unit was removed from an RML RECENTLY and so I thought it would be useful for others to see amnd make 'em think ..

The general lack of responses so far suggests that ALL HANDBRAKES are seen to be as good as the day they were fitted new. Theres a thought !!

Handbrake

Hi Al,
I would also urge everyone to get under and check their handbrakes very carefully . The 'Doc' has just relaced 2391's and I have the old parts back at home . When you look from underneath the extent of the wear and tear is not immediately obvious , you can see all the teeth and grooves but its not until you look on the top when you can really see the damage that could be there . Part of 2391's has worn to a 'U' shape which means it was only probably gripping on the outermost edges of the ratchet not fully accross as it should ! Just because the ratches still click when you apply the handbrake does not mean its not worn.
I've always scotched the wheels and will still do so but at least the handbrake should be good for a few more years now
Thanks Colin !

Grinding Teeth

Hi Mark (and fellow owners of potentially worn down teeth..)

I think you've probably got a good point. Chuckling to myself at the Doc's comment about being able to get underneath "if of a slim disposition" I shoe-horned myself under 2302 yesterday. As you say Mark, the teeth appeared complete and reasonably serrated from the side. The "banana" looked fairly easy to take off however and perhaps that's the only way to be sure (on the flat, with proper chocking)
