Hard to see the signature but it looks correct. The tape use is an old way of attempting to preserve an autograph and it definitely appears to be older. I would bet it's real based on the apparent age of the ink (faded), the use of tape for preservation (as well as it's apparent age) and the letter formation (doesn't look like a clubhouse signature).

Vintage autos of players like Dimaggio are faaaaar more valuable than those from the 80s on. To be honest with you (you said you have thick skin) the tape kills this autograph.

Tell us about the ball itself. Major league Spalding or Reach? League president?

Guys

First I want to say "thank you" for your input. It means alot to me to be able to get some opinions on my hobby. To answer your questions:

The baseball is a "Official League"(across the sweet spot) baseball.

One the bottom is the Spading logo.

One the top it says
163
9inch 5ounces
Yarn Wound
Lively center

Could this of been a practice baseball?

I know for games they used REACH baseballs

Who could remove the tape? I wouldn't dare do it. The tape is very old. I hear it is easy to do but............I am way to nervous to do it.

That old tape is a bugger to get off clean. My eight year old can get it off, but to remove the residue without screwing up the sig. is going to be tough. I'm sure that someone has found a formula that includes household ingredients that may work. Try a google search.

Try this website for removing the tape residue: http://www.signedbaseballmagic.com/

They specialize in removing autographs and salutations on autographed balls, and I saw them advertised in SCD.
