Donnie Darko

by Johnny

You get thet quote from the film Donnie Darko? Cuz if you did, tell everyone you know how sweet that flick is. Its such an obscure work (or so it seems) yet i would rather watch IT more than many of these so-called "psychological thrillers" being released today.
If anyone actually reads this, then i promise you will not be disappointed if you like being confused as sh*t and not understand the plot until the 3rd or 4th time you see it, but yet you enjoy the entire thing anyways. Go ahead and give it a shot and you wont be able to watch it only once.

Re: Donnie Darko

Yes. I was in some way referencing DD.

The "Mad World" version in the movie by Gary Jules & Michael Andrews has a powerful effect, especially with the way it was used in the movie.

Since Tears for Fears created the song, I was giving them credit for the quote.

It is certainly an interesting film.

Hey, how'd you know?

by Lemming

Oh, right: only four people read this board, and Morwen isn't one of them. :)

As for things, are we talking OL or RL?

OL: I've been doing the LurkerLounge site admin thing for two years now, but there's never any news so I don't update much. "Diablo"'s still enormously fun to discuss even if I'm not playing it, so I do that at the Lounge, GameFAQs, and DSFC. My own site's become a fossil.

Some days I'm online in channel: Diablo DSF-1

RL: Completed second year at university this spring. That's going well. I've got awesome professors and the best major in all of acadamia: Mathematics (with CompSci).

I've no personal life. Not becuase I'm kept busy, but because I can't find anyone with similar interests. I don't know where the campus keeps their geeks, but when you can't even find 'em in the mathematics club... sheesh. And as for dating, that cannot be said to have gone poorly or gone well, as I've been entirely unable to accomplish it. If I didn't prefer PCs to people, this might bother me more than it does.

Nair[NakedMage]'s 3@30

by Morgane

I created Nair to play on B.net and just finally give this variant a chance.

I've learned two new things while playing him:

-It's not 'just Lightning'

-Half a screen is too close.

60 hp and 548 mana. This means your life is your ammunition. Sort of like casting Bloodstar at eveything.

After a day spent duelling on B.net, the cobwebs cleared and I was feeling good enough to do a 3@30. The problem was I only had 3 Infravision scrolls.

I scummed games till I got one with a staircase to 14 near the town stairs.

14 Infravision, and two 'ports to stairs to 15.

15 cabalists and azures, both are suseptable to Fireball : )

Laz's house. Snipe the ladies, unleash Manson on Laz.

16 Infravision. Advocates everywhere. Eventually, I work my way behind the lever house. A couple of Clainlightning glory runs (still about 10 Advos in front of D's house) brings out big D.

Diablo was surprisingly easy to kill with Fireball. Took my whole belt though. Had to start drinking from the bag. Of course I wanted a real fight after SC+Golem for an hour, and was easy on the Firewall.

I'm going to keep playing Nair. One day, I'll have maxed spells and I'll finally be free of reader gear.

Going by some of the recent titles for posts, like "preteen lolitas shifting," I thought this was describing a threesome you just had after turning 30.

It is good to see an actual 3@30 post here.

Congratulations and thanks for the type-up.

I still play occasionally, so I'll have to look for you in those public games you mention. I think I'll start with "hardcore gay sex." :)

And if you think playing a naked mage is tough (not that you actually said that, but it helps with my upcoming joke), try playing in a full plate mail without any undergarments.

Nudity vs. hacks and dupes on public b.net.

by Morgane

I kinda miss b.net, so I made up Nair[NakedMage] and went on public games. Of course, Nair was PK'ed within 30 seconds in the church in my first game by a duped up Rogue. Not much has changed. Since I don't wear any items, and am not stupid enough to cart around money there are no consequences to being MK'd,PK'd,TK'd, and occasionally crashed out.

What amazes me is that 99% of the public players have no comprehension of anything but strapping on 'leet dupes and Apocing everything. They've asked me questions like "How the fcuk do I kill those 4 headed dragons coming from the floor?" "What stuff are u wearing?" and "What trainer u use?" after watching me die and not drop anything. You'd figure the name and the 30th level, empty handed, and robed Sorcerer would whack them a few times with the 'Clue Stick'.

One side effect is that the other players fall over themselves to give me duped crap thinking that I actually want it. Often I'll carry it around until I see them try and dupe, -that's when I drop my copy of the dupe : )= Other times I'll turn it into electrons, or pawn it for a much needed spellbook.

Often I get left behind trying to keep up with hackers, and end up scavenging kills. Today, my persistence was rewarded when Zygote[Legit] appeared in a game I was in and suddenly slaughtered everyone but me. Just as I was about to ask why I was spared, they explained that all the other players were cheating. Soon Zygote was joined by Fetus[Legit] and they would burn down cheaters as they appeared. They recognized my real name, and seemed a bit surprised to find me slumming in public games after so many years.

Even though my char is a nakedmage, it's nice to carry a plain res staff in hand (when inv is full), for those rare moments when a companion is coop, can die, and is therefore worth the res. I don't feel too bad about the staff, it does nothing for my combat capability, and keeps his hands busy. Not having to trip town to res an accident-prone n00b is bliss, even if I like the empty hand graphic better.

Nair[NakedMage] and I can be found in public games with names like 'chunky manchowder', 'backdoor bonanza' 'sausage fest', and 'hardcore gay sex' It really does seem to keep most of a certain crowd away.

This message board is a godsend to anyone who cares about D1 Variants. A lot of the people and the words that made Diablo fun are preserved here.

I have a copy of your old site. Unfortunately, you and I played one game together in '99. The game wen't well, but we had a vicious argument the next day. After that, I swore I'd never play a BNM, and gave away all of my cursed gear. The question is: Did I find all of your site worth preserving?

> Maybe a trip to B.Net is in order with a fresh character. >Does anyone truly still play? Hell, it'd be funny just to >mess with the cheaters.

I'd like to forget, our difficult past and join you on b.net with Beyond Naked characters. Since I wasn't around when variants started, playing with the guy who started it all would be a big deal. Plus, we could mess with cheaters : )

Refresh my memory...

by Woody

We had an argument? Without remembering what it was about, I'll just go ahead and appologize up front. When I think back to D1 in '97-'99 I went through a weird sort of 'online personality' evolution. At first I was really, really nice. Over the top helpful. Then, as I became more involved with the threaded message boards on battle.net I began to lose patience with people who I viewed as brash, short tempered and generally inflamatory. Then in response to those kinds of people I became exactly what I'd come to be irritated by. So by the time we talked in '99 I was, uhm, let's say, confrontational over anything and everything. So again, sorry.

I'm up for a game, but I don't know exactly how long D1 can hold my attention. I actually created a character last night and played for about an hour...and I still got some skills ;) You may laugh out loud at this one, but I created Woody(xBNM) as a character that will have the best of both worlds, I'm shooting for a set of beneficial magic and a set of cursed stuff. Anyways, guess what the VERY FIRST magic item that i found was...a cap of tears. LOL! How appropriate.

If i go online it'll be on West in a game "Woody World". see you when i see you.

No need for that. If it weren't for my terrible bitchcraft, the whole thing wouldn't have happened. I too apologize.

This is very familiar to me,but my reaction is different. I'm extemely nice to my friends, but I'm callous to strangers. Getting on my bad side is easy, -after that, I'm extremely sadistic.

>I'm up for a game, but I don't know exactly how long D1 >can hold my attention.

On to the fun stuff : )

>I actually created a character last night and played for >about an hour...and I still got some skills ;)

That's nice surpise about this game, -you get to keep a lot of your skill forever.

> You may laugh out loud at this one, but I created >Woody(xBNM) as a character that will have the best of >both worlds, I'm shooting for a set of beneficial magic >and a set of cursed stuff.

This is a good idea. One that never even entered my mind, I might add. I'm a traditionalist, so having an equipped mode for Nair wouldn't have happened without you. Times are different now. There's no-one to read our tags, and we have to play with who we find. A constricting ring and a legit apoc would let me share the kills when some joker whips out his 255 charge AAoA. Of course, I'll pack some cursed jewelry for special occaisions.

>. Anyways, guess what the VERY FIRST magic item >that i found was...a cap of tears. LOL! How appropriate.

First thing I found with Nair was a short sword of the vulture. It would have been perfect for my no-MS days.

Maybe a pre-arranged game is a better option with all that I have to distract me. Otherwise I may never do it in between family life, work, reading, guitar, music, XboX Live and my soon to arrive new computer...an iMac. What the hell has happened to me? Not Just You, Woody

by Occhidiangela

Sorry to eavesdrop, please forgive me. Lemming cut a link to show that there is life left in the madhouse.

"When I think back to D1 in '97-'99 I went through a weird sort of 'online personality' evolution. At first I was really, really nice. Over the top helpful. That happened to me as well, you are not a lone ranger in that regard. Started as "The Rogue with a Heart" and slowly evolved into a flamer on on-line forums, and the occasional "eat my shorts" sort of wit dispenser in public bnet games when lamers just irritated me enough to make me feel they needed a slapping.

And me 44. I know better.

There are still vestiges of the nice guy, I think . . .

I still do Santa Claus runs in D II for noobs, dropping off in town the stuff I find that I don't need or want.

My last D1 adventure reminded me how long it had been. It was two weeks ago, after at least a year lay off. Started an immortal hero rogue, and was done with the Butcher when play time was over and I had to cut the grass. :)

At the time, I Had been a shut-in for about 6 years, as a result my social skills were pretty bad. Add to the fact that I was in incredible agony all of the time, meaning I was quite deranged by that point. Damn!

Boy did I miss the boat! Here it is late March and I just find out there's LIFE still in the Asylum! NASA, forget about Mars: *this* deserves news coverage!

Y'know, this is just what I deserve for allowing my browser homepage to be set to something other than this place. Only recently did I switch over to the serenity of about:blank.

Anyway! I've a Naked Mage (and assorted other pubbie chars) if you're still up for pubbie hijinks. If you want to setup games, feel free to stop by the LurkerLounge D1 forum or mail me at lemmingofglory AT hotmail DOT com. Rattling cheaters' heads has long been a hobby of mine, and it's usually more fun with an accomplice.

Now for assorted commentary.

"What amazes me is that 99% of the public players have no comprehension of anything but strapping on 'leet dupes and Apocing everything."

I guess some just perfer strap-ons to the real thing.

" 'How the fcuk do I kill those 4 headed dragons coming from the floor?' "

Y'know, I've never gotten that one. Did you tell them it's a sophisticated form of whack-a-mole? (Belial, Lord of Lies, has nothing on me. ;)

" 'What stuff are u wearing?' "

Proper response: "Drippy Staff of Herpes. Wanna taste?"

"Today, my persistence was rewarded when Zygote[Legit] ... Fetus[Legit] ..."

You're kidding me. You met people /name/ legit who actually were? Or do I assume overmuch?

"Even though my char is a nakedmage, it's nice to carry a plain res staff in hand (when inv is full), for those rare moments when a companion is coop, can die, and is therefore worth the res."

I know what you mean. My NM has a Plentiful Staff of Res. Far more economical than 250 gp res scrolls.

"Not having to trip town to res an accident-prone n00b is bliss, even if I like the empty hand graphic better."

It's even more fun to cast it in town and tell newbies they're being abducted by aliens. My Lich can even make them believe it.

I once convinced someone the Wounded Townsman was killing me. I was using a mage with heavy -HP items, and any form of healing instantly killed him. I walked past Wounded Townsman, drank a pot, and fell with a splat. Many resurrects later, I finally convinced the folks who res'd me to kill the Wounded Townsman _before_ resurrecting me, otherwise he'd hit me every time I stood back up. Honestly, who casts resurrect without clearing the area of monsters first? :)

(Re: Fetus/Zygote[Legit])
"They have some sort of clan or something it has a channel; usa legits. Never saw any legits of any kind after that."

Well, they're legit in a rather . . . interesting sense of the word.

Here's what Fetus explained to me: Restoring from backup in situations of item theft (regardless of how the theft occurred) has the following effect: your character is bestowed the "legit" version of the item and the thief now possesses a duplicate.

So, I tried explaining why the player who restores creates the duplicate. That's when he informed me item codes have "duplicate" flags, and that's how "Duplicate item detected, destroying duplicate..." knows which item to destroy.

My attempts to explain the non-existence of a "duplicate flag" fell upon deaf ears.

Credibility

by Morgane

Lemming wrote:

"I once convinced someone the Wounded Townsman was killing me."

OMG! Anyone who has played 5 minutes of Diablo should know that the Wounded Townsman is harmless. The begging can get on your nerves, but that's about it.

The object of the objective in open Diablo seems to be strapping on as many hacks/dupes as possible after joining the game. A god-moding town-killer will kill or crash out everyone present as soon as there is a free space to join anyway. (I've always wondered why PKs never come up with a hack that gets them into full games) So by comparison, Fetus and his pals look like LoLs. After a week or two of watching guys nuke monsters that they can't even see yet, the sight of players swinging swords at critters, or using a spell other than FB or apoc is pretty refreshing.

Personally, I'm lukewarm about how they're dealing with theft. I dealt by not having anything to steal, but even then, people often tried to modify my character with trainers. Backing up really doesn't look that bad.

Some naughtiness

by Lemming

"I've always wondered why PKs never come up with a hack that gets them into full games."

That sounds to me like it'd be *extremely* non-trivial to do, and I think if it was done, all players would need the hack for it to function properly.

"Personally, I'm lukewarm about how they're dealing with theft. I dealt by not having anything to steal"

Same here.

"but even then, people often tried to modify my character with trainers."

But they can't. Even if they extract an item from your pack with a trainer, all they've done is duplicated it.

"Backing up really doesn't look that bad."

Backups in general aren't bad, no. But his situation was thus: A (legit) friend of his took one of his items. Fetus thinks restoring will return the item to him and cause the friend to have a duplicate copy. To me, that rings of great absurdity because the friend stole the original item; nothing Fetus does will change that.

Anyway. As for last night...

I haven't had such fun in awhile. BigD and I spent a few hours in clvl 50 range pubbie games. Our goal, naturally, was to bother as many cheater types as possible. Our weapon? We hit on everyone who joined. Two naked mages making lewd comments while within groping distance just doesn't sit well with people. (Isn't it weird how "personal space" exists even in Tristram?) Our efforts at unnerving pubbies proved most successful, generating some very naughty quotes.

Lemmy -- You emptied both balls into him?

Said many, many times, and the person followed us between games.

That reminds me of an image I made as part of a series entitled "What Laz finds during his coffee break." Two images, but only the first directly relates to this:

I knew there must be others for whom the disturbometer breaks. We should get together sometime and show the pubbies how to shag some cows. And perhaps a warrior or two.

Wonderfully perverse! Alas, you cannot hear my applause.

Pun intended in the "rush of pride" phrasing?

Ahh...

by Big D.

Ahh... Fetus and Zygote. I've come across those two fellows many a time in my pubbie gaming adventures. They seem to be the proprietors of a new "legit" Diablo clan every 5-6 months or so. Most notably the founders of the "all of us are legit" KIN clan. Of course they were all legit because they all used the EXACT same items... that were mysteriously bestowed upon them from their ever faithful and trustworthy clan leader. The irony of it all, was that these items that they duped all sucked. I mean who would really even use a Godly/Whale hat and and Awesome/Lion plate on a mage, anyway? And they were ALL magi.

In addition to the somewhat questionable standards that Lemmy mentioned, they seem to have a different definition of "legit" every time you talk to them. I can recall one specific time, that they were quite happy to call you legit, so long as you didn't use your "hacks" in their game. Not to mention the fact that they frequently use game crashes to get rid of unwanted players. So basically... if the Lvl 50 GPoW-wearing mage with 2000 hit points, 400 AC and 0% resists agreed to turn off "God-mode"... then he was legit, otherwise he got crashed out of the game.

Well, that's way more talk than these two bags of trash deserve. I'm sure they smell like roses compared to the putrid dumpster that is pubbie Bnet these days, but trash is still trash, IMO. Then again, since my Naked Mage turned 48 (now 50), I haven't seen even the remotest sign of any new potentially legit pubbie players... so prehaps I'm just becoming a jaded old man?

Anyway, sorry to hi-jack the discussion... It's good to see some old-timers still interested in coming back to CD for a spell every now and then. Maybe I'll run into online one of these days.

Take Care,

D.

I'm Sill Playing D1!

by Morgane

So surprised to see this place still going. And now the important stuff:

Nyoka [JAMZ] Dotted, found her destiny on the way too.
Gaile [AR] (Axe Rogue) born.
Eimar [VIK] Dotted. Ouch, I'm out of practice 0_0
Indamar [Zip] 3@30, -very nice variant BTW.

There's other stuff too, but I forget. Does V-night still happen?

I was thinking of starting an Elitist Warrior, but I'm not sure about to-hit in late NM and Hell. Was there ever a 'fix' for this, or it it just really painful?

If anyone wants to email, -even to say that I'm a loser for liking D1 so much:

Well, I found my answers on page 28 of this forum. That night, Lord Brom [SNOB] was born. Since then, he's dotted, and I've been poking around Laz's for uniques. His Lordship's got good spells, a DF and a TC. Give him a NLP for his 30th, and he'll have no problem with a 3@30.

I don't like statue bashing, but I'm out of practice. Maybe I'll just ghost it at 70% stealth.

Regular equipment:

ROE (birth)
Scav.Cap or Nightscape
OLH
Blackoak Shield or DB
B-star, or Bonesaw, or DF, or Shadowhawk
A variety of perfect ams (all gifts, except for some fairly crappy ones)

OMG! no Firewall is annoying!

I still remember....

by Thenryb

something which I suspect you have forgotten. I had a SNOB warrior who wanted an RC for 20th. He got that RC from one of your characters and gave your Cleavemaster a Kings Axe of Haste(Battle Axe base). I played mine to level 40 and still have him among my cast of characters. Indeed, to-hit remains a great problem for SNOB warriors. There is simply no unique melee weapon with decent to-hit for hell/hell. He finally acquired a perfect gold heavens ammy and with his Falcon's Talon he does "OK" but far short of what he really needs to do to be a viable hell diff character. Shaeffer's Hammer has the best to-hit of all unique melee weapons but, alas, no haste.

I still have that axe, and it's still on Bancroft my Cleavemaster. That axe is special to me, because it was a gift. The truth is that I was very sick at the time and had trouble remembering things like names. All I could remember is that it was a gift. I'm glad I can put your name to it now.

Thank you : )

I too have discovered sheaefer's hammer, and I'd like to eventually get both on my elitist. Shaefer's has that nice lightning thing too, that salvages even a miss.

Do you find two ROE's help at all with enemy AC, or will he end up bullying lawyers and witches?

two ROE's

by Thenryb

According to my reading of Jarulf, the "damages targets armor" component of the ROE has the effect of "puncturing" which adds 4-12 to hit in Diablo. Assuming those stack, it seems to be marginally useful in Diablo even on hell difficulty. However, in Hellfire it would REALLY be useful since it reduces enemy ac by 87.5%(+ an additional 12.5% for the barbarian). Unfortunately, ROE is not findable in regular MP hellfire. (Lemming's Hellfire-Fixed mod) fixes that (among other things. My oldest SNOB warrior generally uses the RC and wears one ROE and the Constricting Ring. On levels where he dons the Gotter, he uses a second ROE.

Hellfire fixed mod

by Morgane

Thanks for the heads-up about this mod. I've just d/l'd it and will install. The readme is a laugh, and makes fun of the coders who made Hellfire. The coding *is* atrocious, but we have to remember two things:

Blizz was apparently trying to kill the project, and so Sierra dumped it on the market with incomplete graphics and zero playtest, before Blizz could prevent release.

No-one had modded Diablo before.

okay three:

The Monk is kind of cool.

But most importantly:

Yeah, I know that's four, but some of the people who made Hellfire *actually played it afterward* -in public, with real gamers, without an in-house player matching service.

Hellfire

by Thenryb

I know some Diablo afficianados do not "like" Hellfire, but for all its flaws I have always enjoyed the game. I have been playing it off and on on Kali for almost as long as I have played Diablo. The nice thing about Lemmings mod is that I can use my old characters, including my old monk who is far more useful on higher difficulties since he no longer blocks spells. That(spell blocking with resistance) was the single most annoying feature of hellfire and made the monk pretty useless on all witch levels. I warrior could remove his shield, but the poor monk could do nothing to avoid blocking the spells.
If you enjoy hellfire, you may want to look into the Dark Mod if you have not done so already. The developers have never stopped working on that mod and version 5.0 is under development now. A late beta version of that mod is available at their website.http://www.xs4all.nl/~a3n/. This latest version has so many new features it is almost a different game and is one which needs to be played cooperatively on higher difficulty levels. With shared experience there is no longer a need for a character to get "tags". There is a small but dedicated group which plays that mod on Kali.

The moment HF was released, I started playing it, and the moment the hacked hellfui.dll appeared I was on Kali. It's like Diablo, but with more stuff. It was variants that lured me back to Diablo. Sure, I tried playing variants in HF+Kali but my friends just thought I was insane.

No more Monk spellblocking? Guess I better retire my newborn Monk.

well

by Zera(BNM)(TE)

that would depend on your class although it sounds like your a mage

Warriors:try to use the doorways so they all cant hit you at once and so you can kill them one at a time

For mages/rogues you'll have to try to manually avoid there attacks(when the projectiles move toward you move before they hit you) and return fire. And you should use mana shield if your a mage.

Its quite easy but watch out for the one unique that gives them rapid fire(dont know name off hand but you will know when you see him)

And if your character concept allows resistances wear some items with resistance to magic since its classified under the element magic

I can think of 2 reasons why you have a hard time casting spells. Either you are a complete moron and shouldn't be playing the game or the enemies are hiting you abnd you are stunned while you are casting the spells, ruining your casting animation and the spell

The biggest thing you have to learn to be a successful mage is how to avoid this. You definetly have to practice projectile dodging. Melee enemies are nothing to any mage whatsoever they should be dead before they even get close to you( with the exception of triple imunes but your not up there yet). Once you have mastered happy feet, almost nothing can hit you.

Not a complete moron, just a newbie

by

I am using a warrior and I haven't needed to use spells (yet). The game didn't come with alot of instructions and I am a computer moron. I've tried to cast spells in "safe" places like cleared levels and my character just walks toward the area I want to cast the spell at.

If I understand this right, I assign the spells a F5-8 key. When I want to cast a spell I hit the correct function key after that do I click where I want to cast the spell (say like Charged bolt)? Maybe I'm not high enough level to cast the spell. Do the spells go from grey to colored when I can cast them?

I really like playing the game and want to learn so I can play more.
Thanks for the help.

Um when I said that I was assuming you were not a complete moron, but was saying it as a ruled out possibility. Sorry if you took it another way, lack of knoledge of controls just went over my head.

To cast the spells you use the right click button instead of the left click.

Really as a warrior theres not too many spells that are useful. Healing is definitly the most useful. Holy bolt is useful to kill black deaths at a range (although any bow will also work), firewall is a excelent spell, but pretty high mana cost. Teleport is more of a high level warrior spell, you need to have a lot of mana to use it effectively often. For now I wouldnt pump your magic stat past 28.

Sorry man I didn't mean anything

Can any of you tell me this I seriously need help from you guys.

Do any of you know of the clan called KoP (knights of power) or brokers or enc. I need to find their website.

This is why. There has been someone trying to screw me and another guy named Bill (neo~enc if you know him) over since fucking 1998. He has stalked us since then and managed to destroy the enclave by hacking the website and bringing it down. He also pretended to be Ner'Zhul the leader of KoP. If you know anything about this please reply. I would appreciate it very much. Most of the information that we need to find out who he is and get rid if him once and for all is in the old Kop chat forum on network54 (cant find it now) or the brokers clan. If you also have heard of the messenger (what he calls himself) tell me too. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. This person went from a minor annoyance to someone who has followers and can hack our shit. Like he did to my aim account and how he destroyed enclaves site. Also if you know anyone named medivh he is related to this is a way. They were all on Diablo 2 and Warcraft 2 since around 1996 - 2000

Boneyard help requested

by Big Ed

I recently discovered the wonderfull world of Diablo and am now hopelessly addicted. I think I've killed everything on the first 15 levels, and finally found Arkaine's Valor. How the hell do I get down to the boneyard now that there's nothing else left for me to kill? (I think)

Boneyard?

by

Do you mean the Chamber of Bone? There's a staircase leading to it on dlvl 6. The quest is activated by reading a book. If the book hasn't been read yet, the staircase is surrounded by walls. If the book has been read, the staircase is surrounded by pillars instead of walls. i.e. To access the staircase you must read the book or telepor/phase into the little room.

Apart from the Chamber of Bone, I don't know of any boneyard. If all 15 dlvls are cleared, proceed downward to level 16. If you've killed Lazarus, the Pentagram will be glowing red and you use that as a staircase.

Yes, I meant Chamber of Bone. A novice mistake. Please excuse this unworthy one. I haven't read the right book, 'cause the walls are up. Couldn't find any way down to Level 16. I'll have to check and see if the pentagram is glowing red. Thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll be needing more.

2 quests

by Nystul

For the "chamber of bone" quest, the 'book' is one of those stationary tomes you find throughout the dungeon. There is no magic requirement. When you click it, the guy with the creepy voice says his bit, and then the walls come down. I don't recall the name of this tome, but it should be the only one on the level with the Chamber of Bone. Note that if you have already cleared down through level 15, there is almost no point in bothering with this quest. You'll kill some monsters you've already killed before, get probably 0 experience, and find some pathetic items :) Hmmm, I guess you get a spell out of the deal too but it's not so great for a low-magic warrior.

To get to level 16, you need to kill the Archbishop Lazarus (you should not need to clear the chamber of bone however). To get to Lazarus, you take his staff (found on 15) to Cain. This will open a orange-red portal on level 15 near a big pentagram seal on the floor of that level. You go through the portal, muck around down there until Lazarus is dead, and back up to 15 (IIRC exiting Laz's chamber through your own town portal is not good enough, you'll have to take the game's route back to open the way to 16). If you have done all of that, the pentagram seal should lead you to 16 when you click on it.

It's great to see that there's still some activity here. I haven't checked this forum in a while but I needed some input on something.

I'm wondering if I should remove my equipment to allow myself to read more books. My magic would go up from 55 to 70.

This would make my game play a bit easier but is it against the BNR spirit? :) It's definitely against BNM spirit, but BNR is much harder to begin with.

Any comments would be appreciated. :)

Is it really against the spirit? After all the same effect would happen if you died. So it kinda just skips a death. Techichally there are no hard fast rules as you already know. I don't get how some BNMs/BNRs/BNWs use reading glasses. With the exeption of the bow/weopen for the rouges and warriors I dont see how they qualify but then again play the varint how you like.

Well...

by Nystul

Haven't popped in here for a while. If a BNM uses reading glasses, he isn't a BNM :) BNW and BNR can only use weapons in this manner... there really is no room for flexibility in the rules in this manner.

On the other hand, taking off cursed items to read books has been considered an acceptable practice. The early posts that cleared this up would probably be hard to track down by now, but the general idea is that you can take off your cursed items as long as you are in town (and don't put on any non-cursed items, of course).

I had read that too, cant remember the author though
Some BNMs use reading glasses
It is against the spirit and rules and I wouldnt ever use them

But the fact is that it is hard to find good variant players
Im happy when people are willing to try variants at all
The more lenient you are the more likely people are to join the variant side

When 29 out of 30 players just laugh at your crusade for that legendary clumsy bow of the pit plus how often do long bnet friendships outside guilds/clans last
Id rather play games with players who follow most of the rules of BNM than none at all
Thats just my opinion though

Some people just aren't into it

by

The DSF, for example, is absolutely obsessed with Naked Mages. I think at least 75% of the people there have one. But other variants? Only a handful play them.

If people want to break the spirit of the rules to make it easier on themself, that makes me think that they're more interested in the novelty of the character than the actual gameplay. Or, that they'd rather win at any cost than have to ever admit defeat.

I'd simply recommend playing with folks who respect your variant's rules. (e.g. Don't "forget" BNMs have no resist and let fly torrents of CL.) Finding variant players to game with is hard these days. There are some Naked Warriors/Rogues, ARCs, BARs, and a few other vars hanging around the DSF channel:

As far as Im concerned reading glasses arent a real big part of the BNM spirit
Usually the only time I can even get people to try the BN way is when they want to try it when they see I use cursed items and praise the way its fun

Its really great when you find enthusiastic people but you wont see that often and dont last long

I know where you are coming from but there's some problems with it

by

It must be rough these day (tho I don't know how much) to find good players to coop with, with such an old game. Even D2 has slowed down considerably. However, the varaint community was never driven by popularity, rules were not relaxed just to lure more players. In fact, the rules got harder as more and more people came to the dark side. The more we knew the harder the rules get. If one can't find an easy enuf variant to play they are probably not variant material. No insult is intended to anyone by that statement, we all enjoy our games at different levels.

It's perfectly ok to alter certain rules to tailor fit one's playing ability/style/enjoyment. Problems come, for example, when someone is running around proclaiming they beat Diablo in hell diff as a BAR at lvl 30 because they, just this one time, they see fit to equip a Ksoh and Gpow; or someone claiming an ironman victory when they fail to mention they got unlimited free res in town. The accomplishments made by those players before you should not be lessen by someone else claiming the same with relaxed rules, if for nothing other than respect for your fellow man.

I know your intentions are good, but please, if you relax the rule make sure it's mentioned in the brag posts. Better yet, name it something else, or make up your own rules. We had put a lot of work (while fun) into the creation of variants, raised the bar in diablo gaming, and generally, contributed a lot of strategy and discovery in the diablo community. We shall not be tainted ;p

Have fun

Ok this has gone far too long and has nothing really intelligent said

My point was this, If the rules are not clear on something interpret as you think it is

If you think its against the spirit don't do it

My reference to reading glasses came from a debate in one of the forums.

They were debating whether the rules prohibited reading glasses

I have no idea where they got the idea it was allowed but its been a long while since I read the posts.
The debate whether we can take items off has existed for a while and my singular point was were not going to criticize you if you do it

The point about relaxing rules was not about relaxing rules but wasgoing along saying theres not that many variant players and to ty to keep it simple when introducing players to variants

These post has not accomplished nothing but deleting more asylum posts and have accomplished nothing but then again thats probably my fault for making my statements hard to understand

Huh?

by

Your reaction seems very defensive - as if you're reacting to a flame. I didn't notice and flames directed toward you.

"Ok this has gone far too long and has nothing really intelligent said"

I hardly think this is accurate, and it's borderline insulting considering the content and tone of what we've posted.

"My point was this, If the rules are not clear on something interpret as you think it is"

Our point is this: It's been debated and a decision was reached long ago, likely while Woody was still here. The ruling is that a BNM can remove -Mag gear for reading, but he cannot equip +Mag gear in order to boost it. Regardless of how other BNMs have interpreted the rule, the official ruling is as stated.

"If you think its against the spirit don't do it"

We said that, too.

"The point about relaxing rules was not about relaxing rules but wasgoing along saying theres not that many variant players and to ty to keep it simple when introducing players to variants"

Are you advocating giving them a dumbed down version of the rules rather than the full thing? That can't work. If they're following an abridged version of, for example, BAR rules they might not know that BARs don't cast spells. If they're interested in the variant they need the full rules to play it.

Usually I've seen variants introduced to people in a very simplistic manner: A brief synopsis of the rules, and if they're interested tell them where to find the full rules. So if to introduce the SNOB I'd say, "He uses only unique items and 'unique' or 'noble' spells." If they were interested in the variant, I'd tell them where to find the complete rules so they could start one, and I'd be there to answer any questions that they might have.

So, while there is a general lack of interest in the game and the pool of potential partners is smaller than ever, I think the way to recruit players is the same as it's always been. Tell 'em about it. If they wanna play, give 'em a link to the rules. Giving them a simplified "newbie" version of the variant is no way to start 'em off. If I've misunderstood your point, feel free to restate it. ;)

"These post has not accomplished nothing but deleting more asylum posts and have accomplished nothing but then again thats probably my fault for making my statements hard to understand"

I don't think it's deleted any posts. IIRC: N54 handles each page based on number of threads per page. Thus, for every *new thread* an old thread is lost - not for every new post.

But I agree that you've been hard to understand. Don't take this the wrong way, but try using punctuation rather than making each paragraph one sentence. In addition to you being difficult to understand, I think you've had difficulty understanding *us*.

here is what I was talking about

by Zera(BNM)(TE)

"Your reaction seems very defensive - as if you're reacting to a flame. I didn't notice and flames directed toward you."

Who's flaming who, I don't see anyone flaming anyone else but if I have seemed defensive I appologize.

"Ok this has gone far too long and has nothing really intelligent said"

A little while ago KOP had said every new thread deleted a old thread, I mistaked it for every new post deletes an old post. Every new thread deletes an old thread makes much more sense. I was not insulting anyone I just didn't think this thread was going anywhere and was deleting posts that really didnt need to be deleted, but no posts were deleted.

"The ruling is that a BNM can remove -Mag gear for reading, but he cannot equip +Mag gear in order to boost it"

I must've missed that ruling. It probably came before version 1.07 which is when I started variants. I just used common sense that you can die anyway so taking
-Mag is ok and +Mag is blessed so it is not allowed

Acually I really think I do understand you. You have worked hard making these variants and with your variant exploits and accomplishments and don't want some idiot "dumbing down the rules" and making bragging about doing the same things as you did except they had it a whole lot easier and didn't follow the rules.

When I was talking about ignoring some rules I was talkiing about insignificant rules. And mostle when variants conflict with each other.

I'm sure some of you do it too. In a ironman game does your BNM worry about streaking? I'm not about to leave the other people to streak. When playing a beyond naked lemming do you have diablo your precious cursed items? As far as I'm concerned letting him beat on me for a while fullfills the requirement. Is it in the rules you can do that? No. But I'd rather keepmy precious cursed items, especially when playing Abysmal where cursed items were much rarer.

And about that BNMs using reading glasses. I was referring to some BNMs in one of the forums who said the rules didn't say anything against reading glasses.
I always figured + mag is blessed and against the rules but I basically said who cares they don't help them all that much, as long as they are using cursed items. BNRs and especially BNWs are a whole different story, them using reading glasses would give them a huge advantage against all other BNRs/BNWs

Then again these are my opinions and are no way endorsed by anyone but me and a few of my friends

The first lines in equipping your BNM...

by

"I was referring to some BNMs in one of the forums who said the rules didn't say anything against reading glasses."

Hello.

I've had many variant texts sitting in a folder for years and years, although with all my other Diablo 1 files.

My copy of the document was taken from a long time ago, just after the "reading glasses" debate.

Here are the first two lines in the paragraph entitled Equiping Your BNM:

"The only items that a BNM are allowed to wear or use are cursed ones. That's it, no exceptions."

The only items allowed are cursed items.

NO EXCEPTIONS.

Are reading glasses cursed? The answer is no. Therefore, can they be used or worn? The answer is no.

For my own BNM, I made sure of this. Every time I found a good non-cursed item, it would go on the ground in town and would automatically be given to a playing partner or muled off. I made sure that the BNM only carried cursed items so as to not violate this rule, accidentally or otherwise.

It doesn't matter if you are referring to other BNMs or yourself, I'm not directing this at anyone specifically, but if someone tells you to use reading glasses, tell them to read the rules again until they get it right.

In my mind, if a variant stretches the rules, they are not longer the variant in question, and should note this. At this very moment, I am playing a GOTH-LAW and am very tempted to switch from a LAW armor to a high AC gothic armor to speed my experience building. However, I will not do this, because I wish to follow the rules. Having a level 39 (almost 40) GOTH-LAW played the way it was intended is more satisfying than having a level 45 or 50 GOTH-LAW that used illegitimate items. And when I hit that plateau playing the right way, it will be more special.

Thank you.

A plea to all

by KingOfPain

> I'm wondering if I should remove my equipment to allow myself to read more books. My magic would go up from 55 to 70.

A matter of procedures. IMO it would be against the BN spirit to remove gear for such purpose as reading more books. You are Beyond naked, not just naked. However, It's perfectly acceptable if you have other less cursed items to wear which will allow you to read more. By less cursed, I mean something that would allow you to have more magic points but the over all performance is as bad if not worse than what you current equipment is. After all, we are "required" to wear the most cursed items we can find :) Of course we are not talking about a rl legal procedure here but a matter of keeping in spirit - Finally, let us not forget to do what's comfortable and fun with our characters despite the rules. And, if you are role playing or multi classing you can choose which rules set to break or keep when there's a conflict.

Glad to see you are still around :)
Come visit us at the Realms Beyond if you like.

THE PLEA
I assume this forum was gone when my link to the newer Asylum forum went dead, until I found this again by following a link in some old Forge post. What a pleasant surprise!

We are in the process of trying to archive some of the glory tales and finding on this forum as much as we have the time for it and add it to our Realms Beyond Diablo site

The sad thing is Woody had left the forum setting to a maximum of 50 pages. In other words, if someone makes a new post, another one will be deleted in the back pages. I am not asking anyone to stop posting, just don't spam :)
