Murder probe launched after brothers shot dead

Two brothers were shot dead and a teenage boy injured in a double gun murder last night.

The men, named locally as Paul and Kenneth Corbally, were gunned down as they sat with the teen in their executive-style car in Neilstown, west Dublin.

The brothers, aged 32 and 35 and originally from the Ballyfermot area of the city, were under investigation for serious crime in Dublin.

Gardaí said the injured 16-year-old was shot and suffered a gunshot wound to an arm.

He was rushed to the Tallaght Hospital were he was undergoing treatment under armed Garda protection.

His injuries were not life-threatening.

Pat Rabbitte, Labour’s justice spokesman who has represented Neilstown residents for some years, described the murders as appalling and shocking.

“It’s extraordinary that on a high summer’s evening that there can be such casual killing in a built-up civilian community,” the west Dublin TD said.

“It’s just appalling that it has come to this, that human life is this cheap and professional killers roam the streets.

“So long as enormous, lucrative profits are to be made from drugs distribution and drug pushing in our communities we will continue to have this killing. It’s appalling and shocking.”

The killings bring to more than 10 the number of gun murders in the country this year.

The dead men were in a car on the Neilstown Road near Lett’s coalyard when a hitman struck at about 8pm.

It is understood the brothers, who were convicted in April over an attempted attack in a fast-food outlet, were the subject of criminal investigations by detectives across the city.

A large area around the crime scene was sealed off as garda forensic officers began a detailed search of the area.

Gardaí appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed anything suspicious to contact detectives at Ronanstown garda station.

Government Chief Whip John Curran added his condemnation of the attack.

“This is a disgraceful crime, carried out with absolutely no regard for human life whatsoever and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms,” the local Fianna Fáil TD said.

“I know the people of Neilstown will be totally appalled to hear of this awful crime, regardless of the circumstances. There can be no justification for the taking of human life.”

Mr Curran urged local residents to support the garda investigation.

Aengus O Snodaigh, Sinn Féin justice spokesman, said: “It is clear that more resources are needed to be dedicated to the fight against drugs in our communities.

“Gardaí, who are fully trained to fight against crime, need to be taken out from behind their desks and put directly into the fight against the drugs crisis in this state.”

Mr O Snodaigh called for the Garda Drugs Squad to be given further resources.

The dead men were shot several times in the head and body.

The gunman was believed to have been in a Silver Audi A6 fitted with a taxi plate and false registration plates, 00-KE-13498.

It was found burnt out in the Foxboro area of Lucan after the shooting.

It is believed at least two men were involved in the murders.

Gardaí appealed for information from anyone who may have seen the car between 5pm and 8pm from Clondalkin village up to Neilstown and after the attack on the Fonthill Road and in Foxboro.

Post mortems were due to be carried out in Tallaght Hospital.
