There’s a lot of friction in the Irish neighbourhood where The Bronx meets Yonkers in New York these days. I’ve seen it myself. On one side you’ve got the Irish, and on the other you’ve got the Irish/Americans and the Yonkers cops. A lot of it stems from one night in particular last year.
McLean Ave. & Katona Ave. are 100% Irish. It’s this huge area of Irish bars and shops with tri-colours flying from all the buildings. I don’t know how long it will stay this way with the current Hispanic invasion but it has remained staunchly Irish all these years.
Anyway, the bars are packed with Irish every weekend and a lot of lads were getting mugged by irish/americans as they staggered home in roughly the same area. They were easy pickings. It was happening a lot and a group of Irish lads who drank in a bar where I worked decided to set a trap. About ten guys sat in a van where the muggings were taking place and two more guys staggered up the street singing and pretending to be drunk. These 5 or 6 young guys then appeared and as they were about to jump the two singing Irishmen everyone jumped outta the van and proceeded to beat the shit outta them. The Yonkers cops were on the scene in minutes and as they started laying into the irish guys with batons, the irish then turned their attention on the cops. They beat up the irish/americans and the cops and ran. Three of the cops got badly beaten that night. Four of the irish guys were on planes home the next day as they were all illegal and would’ve been in big trouble. Nobody was caught.
Anyway since then, there’s quite a bit of tension in the neighbourhood. Every night at throwing out time the yonkers cops are standing outside Rory Dolans and all the other main watering holes hitting their batons into the palm of their hands just hoping somebody says something outta line, just so they can get stuck in.
Funny thing is, the cops there know that almost all those irish along McLean & Katona Avenues are illegal, but don't do anything about it. I guess they’re too busy with other shit.
Anyway, at least the muggings stopped.

When I was there a couple of weeks ago, Rory Dolans bar was closed for 'renovation' apparently! I wonder if it had anything to to with an incident involving an off duty cop shooting someone outside the bar a few months ago??
