T.J English mentions Kansas in his book 'Paddy Whacked' but refers back to the Pendergast family that ran the city from the times of the famine through to the 1930's. They used Irish muscle to further their political ambitions in typical Irish American fashion. Italians would argue that Irish politicians were not part of an Irish Mob in the US, but that is simply untrue! Irish politicians were another branch of the same tree! Italians- even to this day- have had no way near the same amount of representation in US politics as the Irish have.

The Irish could play every card- the politicians, the police force and of course the gun!

According to T.J English's book 'Paddy Whacked':

'Jim Pendergast was from a large Irish Catholic family of nine. Both of his parents hailed from County Tipperary and had come to America as potato-famine refugees. His mother first arrived in the United Stares through the city of New Orleans, at a time when Irish immigrants were dying in their thousands from yellow fever and hellish labor conditions. His mother's stories of starvation and death in the Louisiana swamps haunted Jim Pendergast and his siblings, instilling in their clan a drive and ambition that would dramatically reshape the environment in which they lived.'

What is the source of your information?

The name may have originated in Wales, but many Scottish, Welsch and English went to Ireland and their names followed them...therefor there are some Irishman who have non-Irish names yet are full blooded Irish(well 99.999999999999999 percent). A friend of mine's last name is "White" and his father is an immigrant from County Cork Ireland, his mother is a half German half Irish girl originally from Besonhurst, Brooklyn...so...it is possible seeing as how White is an English name.

names with prefix "pen-" are of cornish origin ultimately.

However there was quite a few guys from Kerry with the name Prendergast.

One was named as being fairly senior in the IRA in that region. He died in the 90s, I think.
