CRIMES: Patrick Conroy was once one of the most wanted men in Britain.
He went on the run after escaping custody and was eventually arrested
in Spain. On his return, his trial heard how one of his rivals screamed
in agony as the roots of his teeth were exposed in a torture scene
reminiscent of the hit movie Marathon Man.
Paddy Conroy, 42, was found guilty of abducting and torturing a
suspected member of another gang in Newcastle's tough West End. He was
jailed for 11 years in 1995, but has been closely monitored by the Home
Office while behind bars because of his extensive underworld contacts
across Europe. At one time, the three Sayers brothers were serving a
total of 37 years behind bars. While they were inside, their father
John Snr was shot in the face in an apparent gangland hit.
John Henry Jnr was jailed in February 1990 for plotting the armed raid
on Pritchard's security firm in Gateshead, when masked robbers with
shotguns and sledgehammers smashed in to steal £400,000 in wages.
Sayers has always protested his innocence but failed in an appeal to
overturn his sentence.
In 1997, younger brothers Stephen, 35, and Michael, 34, were jailed for
10 and 12 years respectively for a £50,000 plot to blackmail a local
businessman.

Ask anyone in Newcastle about the Sayers Firm, they are "the" boys, Paddy Conroy is wanting people to think he has been accused of various murders to enhance his repuatation, he has never been accused, never been arrested, never been interviewed for any murders at all, he's just a loser who has had to resort to making a Mockumentary (Macintyres "Get Conroy")about himself.

As anyone who's seen shirtless Newcastle supporters on a winter evening at St James' Park will testify, Geordie men are made of hardy stock.

But the macho bravado of Toon Army members pales in comparison to the actions of Geordie underworld veteran Paddy Conroy, the first figure profiled in MacIntyre's Underworld.

Out on license from an 11-year jail sentence for torture, kidnapping and escape, Conroy's conditional release is complicated by a rival gangland family taking out a contract on his life. His re-appearance at a time of turf warfare between rival outfits threatens to worsen the fragile balance of power, due to his stated aim to re-establish his profile and reputation within the criminal fraternity.

Although now middle-aged and resembling a leaner Geoffrey Hughes, his eye patch (worn due to his eye haemorrhaging as a result of prison staff delaying necessary treatment for cataracts - or so he alleges) is a permanent reminder of the brigandish nature of his lifestyle.

The show starts with Paddy playing daddy to his two sons, Buster, 11, and Jack, 1. Long-suffering wife of 30 years Maureen also features in this homely sequence. However, as the couple recount the tale of how they met, it's further evidence of the roughness of their environment. Conroy used to mug Maureen and steal her pocket money; unsurprisingly, she didn't fancy a date with him when he asked. But Paddy wouldn't take no for an answer and one day, in his own words, he "grabbed her by the hair and took her home ... You think I'm jokin', don't ya!".

Maureen's expression indicated he wasn't.

Conroy's father ran a criminal enterprise in which Paddy served his apprenticeship and would later inherit. This provides some insight into his almost nostalgic view of historic criminality. Of his youth he states that "the villain was just a part of life in those days, especially from the more deprived areas. It wasn't considered a bad thing unless you did bad villainy, immoral things". Conroy makes a distinction between "gangsters" and villains. To him, a villain is just a product of his environment and upbringing, whereas "a gangster lives in a world of his own, an imaginary world".

Conroy denies MacIntrye's contention he might be perceived as a dangerous man ("I don't think so - if you don't have problems with me. But if you come attack us, then I'll be a dangerous man"), and understands the current underworld difficulties as resulting from the new breed - those operating outside accepted criminal codes: "There's loads of families from our sort of background who are good people, but you get families who are villains with no morals and not fit to walk this fookin' Earth!"

Paddy considers himself a protector in the local community, and it says much for his standing (or, perhaps, the fear he inspired) that when he was jailed for violence against the police in the 1980s, thousands of people demonstrated on the streets for his release. Right-hand man Bullock even went to the extreme of climbing to the top of the Tyne Bridge to protest, but only managed four hours because "it was cold - freezing, proper freezing". Conroy chides Bullock for not staying up there longer, although the latter defends himself by saying, "Well, it wasn't planned properly. Next time I'll take a sleeping bag and a flask!"

But despite Conroy's bravado and criminal heritage, he's clearly feeling the pressure of the license conditions and the price on his head. He wears a bullet proof vest in public, and his associates constantly monitor his surroundings. When the security lapses, as happens when Conroy returns from a night at the track, he starts to panic. After shouting, "Where the fook are ya?" repeatedly into his phone, he skulks in the lobby until his driver turns up, greeting him with, "Cunt! You cunt!", before berating him further off mic.

Unable to retaliate in the way he had before his sentence, Conroy employs various means to deal with the tension, such as escaping to his country getaway 30 miles outside Newcastle. On his allotment he grows vegetables, and to MacIntyre's surprise is particularly proud of the trophies he's won for his prize leeks.

But even in his hideaway he has to be careful of his activities. As an example, his lifetime ban from using firearms means even a spot of rabbit hunting would result in an infringement of his license terms.

As Bullock, MacIntyre and Conroy chat in a shed, two associates bring in a couple of rabbits they've shot, and Bullock guts them by the riverbank. The shots of his handiwork are intercut with MacIntyre asking Paddy if he's religious (he's not) and whether he thinks he's going to heaven (he does). To those who reckon he's going to hell he retorts, "They can think what they like - it's between me and the big fella!"

Conroy also uses other methods to relax, having smoked cannabis since he was 16. The green-fingered approach he uses on his leeks also applies to his cannabinoids ("Better to grow your own. See that: it's fookin' organic!").

But the cannabis and leeks are insufficient to keep his ferocity in check. When his family plot in the local cemetery was desecrated in 1994 by a rival gang, his inability to tolerate any affront to his reputation or control his anger led to him committing the acts that resulted in his 11-year sentence.

Billy Collier, a criminal who worked for a rival family, was allegedly heard boasting in a local pub he'd been paid £5,000 to dig up the grave, chop parts of the body up and put them through Conroy's window. After that, it was only a matter of time before Paddy and his henchmen exacted their revenge.

While the pain felt by Conroy is understandable - with him unable to hold back tears as he recounts the story - the retaliation he had planned for those alleged to be responsible is chilling, issuing his threat head-on to the camera: "I would have killed the whole family. All their loved ones. I would have murdered every single one of them if any of them had done that to my family".

Within days, with only the digging up the grave part of the alleged plan carried out, Collier was kidnapped at gunpoint from a local shop and tortured. He was abandoned in a warehouse by his attackers after having his teeth pulled out with pliers. Conroy denies being behind the amateur dentistry ("I just beat him up. Hit him with a stick, pool cues, hit him with a gas bottle. He got a beating but not a great beating"), but admits to driving him 400 yards and leaving him at the location where his teeth would be torn out.

Conroy was arrested, but managed to escape en route to court, and was on the run overseas before being caught by Interpol. Security was much tougher on his return: to be on the safe side, a 17 vehicle convoy, aeroplane, helicopter, snipers and a gunboat made sure he kept his court appearance.

However, his holidays in the sun did nothing to moderate his temperament, and Conroy cracked under pressure in court, attacking the prosecuting lawyer. As a result he was dragged out past the jury by four prison officers, which, as Conroy concedes, "didn't help" his innocent plea. He was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 11 years, although Maureen continues to accept Paddy's version of the attack on Billy Collier.

Conroy struggles to process the changes made in the Newcastle landscape in the decade of his incarceration, and also finds unfamiliar the spectacle of a new godfather (John Henry Sayers) controlling his former patch ("They say they run Newcastle, but no one fookin rules me"). With the old-skool underworld against him, Paddy is forced to make new alliances with local Triad gangs (the "new breed" which he had earlier railed against), and not without reason. A confrontation with 14 members of the Sayers gang led to Paddy having to endure a severe beating, in the knowledge that to fight back could have resulted in his death, and to involve the police (strictly against his criminal code) would have meant he'd contravened his license conditions.

The ongoing feuds and precarious situation cause Paddy to worry about his eldest son Buster, ("One day you will be the bossman") and that he'll inherit the internecine feuds in the same way he did from his own father. Buster is only now realising the extent of his father's criminal lifestyle. His copy of Zoo magazine shows a pixellated snapshot of dad alongside a cover feature on "Britain's deadliest gangs" ("Meet the men who run YOUR manor"). This side of his father he finds hard to understand, with the additional implications of what it means for his own future.

One reason for Buster's concern over his family's criminal heritage may be the example of his cousin Dylan, who at 22 has already been jailed four times. Despite Paddy's assertion that he's a "good lad in general, just bored", Dylan is back in jail within four days of being released from his latest sentence after brandishing two sawn-off shotguns.

Yet despite having a clear understanding of the reality of prison life ("Everyone in there is depressed - whole prisons suffer from depression"), Paddy risks his license conditions being invoked after an unnecessary run-in with the police. During a raid on his sister's house he allows himself to be drawn into a verbal confrontation with an officer and is charged with a public order offence. Unwilling to face court proceedings, Conroy goes on the run again, despite the knowledge he risks a heavier sentence as a consequence. However, this proves to be unnecessary, and somewhat farcical, as his 72-day period in hiding turns out to be just to avoid a £130 penalty charge, which is sent through the post to him after he avoided the initial court date.

Despite this good fortune, and the end of his license period meaning Conroy is a free man once again, he's unable to shake off past events - particularly the feud with the Sayles family. Conroy interrupts his cooking of a celebratory family dinner to launch into an uninterrupted four-minute tirade, unintelligible in parts and incoherent in others, where he tries to piece together what may have been slights on his reputation and the intentions of his rivals (his perceptions and thought processes clearly affected by his cannabis use), leaving no doubt he'll retaliate at some point, "and it's coming fookin' shortly, believe you me". His rant culminates in him shouting, "Get that on your fookin' documentary!", before resuming his preparation of the family meal.

At this point, just by giving its subject enough rope, the profile allows the true nature of Conroy to emerge, demonstrating that any performance by an actor of a "gangster" role can never fully convey the menace of intent that an authentic criminal has. Despite certain sequences that humanised him (sequences with his family and on his allotment) and a refusal by MacIntyre to allow a caricature to develop - as would be likely in a Zoo feature - Conroy's inherent brutality continually re-surfaces. His own need to distinguish between his own criminal acts and those of "gangsters" suggests that to some degree he is fully aware of the nature of his lifestyle and its implications, the essence of which it was essential MacIntyre captured in his "fookin' documentary".

Served two prison sentences,been fitted up on the last two of them by some bent old bill which I tried to get out of by doing a deal , have served time in a few of your maximum security prisons here in england and one abroad, last two sentences totalled 16 and half years,was held a max security prisoner (cat "A") till the days i was released,i was a double cat "A"prisoner most of the sentence and only being reduced to single cat "A" on my last year to serve, rules of the prison state an officer and a dog must accompany cat "A" prisoners every where they go if the leave a building, on my walk towards the gates on my release day they had the dogs guarding me to escort me out of jail, I fort I was John Belushi off the Blues Brothers! a refused to apply for parole due to the fact you have to admit your guilt which were..nt happening,I eventually admitted my guilt otherwise I wouldnt have gotten parole and I would have been fucking sick if a had to saty in longer just for not admitting it, whist in the foriegn prison the inteligence service wanted me to give up my extradition by means of dirty tactics by branding me a rapist in the spanish media where i was attacked and beaten up on a regular basis.I have met loads of people along the way, Bob Maudsley the fellow our newspapers call Hanibal The Canibal, Bobs murdered 5 since he..s been in jail, The Black Panther (Donold Nielson, I still have all the newspaper cuttings from the time he did them in) Don was my neighbour for quite a while and we really got on together, Harold Shipman or Doc as I called him, had some intersting chats with him about how to get away with murder but that was before he was convicted and i thought "had on,you didnt get away with murder" good job I never took his advice, Gerramy Bamber, or Bamber Gasgoine as he like to be called was a good cook and i got him to cook me and my mate who will remain annonymus lovely big cakes and more often than not Cacka Curry which I still make today and I have had hundreds of email recwests for the recipe,also Archibold Hall (the butler that served death ) archy as I call him and Pat he called me was convicted of 55 murders but had committed 75, 45 of them were tory MPs, i used to love sitting on his knee listening to his tales about them and how they all come about,he had me in stitches with laughter especially when he tickled my feet,in them days they kept me on the lifers wing with all the killers and nonces for my own protection away from the general prison population, i used to wonder why that was done to me and now it seems the authorities thought I might try and get information off them and try and do a bargain for solving some unsolved murders,they had me down on their records as a cereal killer to make it look real to the real cereal killers so now i can see why they held me with them too ? Super Grass glover gave evidence against myself for other unrelated offences after he had confessed to killing Viv, at my trial it was stated by the prosicution that glovers evidence against myself could be taking as reliable, going as far as to call professional witnesses to certify that glover was not mad or anything, the judge ruled in favour of the prosicution and glovers evidence was allowed into the trial to be used against myself, his reliable word helped convict me. I got eleven and a half years on the word of glovers reliable evidence and since that day i have protested against the reliability of glovers evidence but have had the door slammed in my face every which way i turned,even his dad Davy Snr said "Hes not realy a GRASS,he's just trying to make some money" my argument then turned to this, if glovers evidence was reliable enough to send myself to prison for over a decade then surely his confession to killing Viv Graham must also be took as reliable,especially against himself,maybe in law it aint reliable enough to convict anyone else that he has implicated but surely it must be enough to get himself in trouble ? and i must stress that is my only intention in this site,after what glover did to myself i think it only fit and proper that he should face up to the other things he done with the police and them other things are what he reliably admitted too in the same breath that he gave that imformation about myself which later convicted me, he made that confession at exactly the same time he gave the authorities the imformation that was used against me, they cant have it both ways i say, its either correct what he told the police or it aint ! and if it aint then it should of been "aint" at my trial too, i would not of spent the last decade in jail if glovers word had been took as unreliable evidence, but no it was took as reliable and i got sentenced to over a decade in prison, Maximum Security prison too till the day i got released,and i was kept a cat "a" prisoner with lifers till the day they released me, first six and a half years i was a double cat "A" prisoner,that meant that you got no pudding and on every visit i had i had to have a screw sat right next to me on every visit to listen to what was being said,actually on my table in the seat right next to me,and every time i got to use the phone i had to have a screw sat next to me with a set of headphones on listening to my family conversations,and strip searched before and after every visit,not nice at all i can tell you, Read glovers confession and tell me why he did not get charged with Viv..s murder, he gave the police details that turned out to be correct in every way and they were details that only the murderer would of knew ? he showed them where he bumped into a wall with the getaway car after the shooting and after forensic testing later proved to be true, he also told the police about items that were in the getaway car that were destroyed when the car was burnt out after the murder ! The sayers family is headed by the father (john brian sayers) in court sayers claimed that his father were a Freemason who had highly ranked police as friends,one,a freemason police superintendant friend gave imformation that was used to help aquit sayers at his murder trial. The father runs care holmes when he is not attending the lodge with his police friends, and he looks after our vunerable olk folk when not attending his familys murder trials god only knows why this family want to look after dying vunrable old folk ! ------------------------------------------------- On the front page of one of one of them newspapers i have in a slide show you will see one of them says Gangster Familys go to war (over turf, well turf is also known as dead bodys)that article was published not long prior to me being released from prison,some of the authorities knew then that I was blaming the sayers behind the scenes for these murders and trouble would brew as soon as they heard,would not any family see red when they found out another family along with some bent murder squad cops the other family had in their pocket were fitting you up with some fucking murders you aint committed ? well it happened and when I got that battering on westgate hill over it,they attacked me while there was about 18 of them and i was on my own apart from a 10 stone business associate called Tommy Cowan who sat through the freddie night murder trial we me because we thought they were gonna get a guilty and we were fucking gutted when they got a not guilty,Tommy now looks like skeletor off power rangers with all the worry in his life and has been in touch with the police about it,someone even stole the lions wich used to adorn the front of his house...the whole incident was caught on council cctv with it happening in the middle of our town centre and we all got arrested for it as soon as the police got their hands on the council cctv footage of the incident, we are all on camera doing it,and you can see me trying to crawl like a rat under a car to protect myself,all this happened in broad day light in the middle of the main road in newcastles town centre ! plenty witnesses too with it being lunch time, one of them that made a statement that watched the whole incident was a Nun she saw me pull a knife out and get it took off me by one of the 18 people that were there ! So there it was on a plate for the old bill, its been predicted in the newspapers by Nostradamus that it were going to happen, we are all on that two strikes thing and we have all used our previous strikes so this one takes us out,life sentences all round,so in other words I am shitting myself, we are all still on prison licence too, WE..RE NICKED and we aint getting out of this police station were my thoughts when i was laying in that cell, I thought fucking hell"I was gloating at someone who was on trial for murder" Im gonna see all the lifers again and I havnt even sent them anything into prison like I promised them i would, they showed me the vidios on the interview and you could clearly see me trying to crawl like a rat under a car, I said I was looking for my keys and I identified them all but i just fucked them off and said that it only just looked like me from behind with my big fat arse, they done a DNA test on my blood that i had deliberatley wiped on the car near the fight scene where i had been cut with the knife they had took off me and they used in self defence, the DNA test proved positive that it were me, i was as shocked as anyone when I found out I was interbred, i were..nt shocked though when i found out that instead of proper solicitors coming to the police station to represent me like you would expect, no it were proper barristers that have actually worked on murder cases, I was telling the authorities for years these murders was committed by the Sayers family ! im fighting with this cunt Glover and his dad over these murders, blaming us for them anyway and here we have the fucking cops that actually worked on those murder cases coming in to represent me against them ! this aint fucking right i say and have placed official complaints in against it, anyway to cut a long story short I have tried everything I can to blame the sayers family and others for murders they aint commited, then the police throw us all out and then we get letters telling us not to bother going back, no charges ! Firstly can i tell the reader that i dont have any english qualifications so please bear with me.

this site is here to keep the public imformed about the everyday goings on with my life at the
moment, i have numorous battles going on at this moment in time, one of them is with the sayers firm which everyone knows about, and the other is with the freemason orginisation that the sayers firm are members of.


This is the way i see it.
John Henry Sayers disclosed the freemasons connections to all of the unsolved murders in our region when he gave evidence "whilst under oath" at the Freddie Knights murder trial, a murder of which he was accused.

John Henry Sayers is the business partner of Alan Fisher, Cocaine dealer, that was disclosed to the jury by the undercover cop "Vinnie" in our recent cocaine trials that have taking place in Newcastle recently.

Alan Fisher has drank with these Bent Freemason cops for decades on a social basis up at the punchbowl pub in jesmond along with his other business partner Paul Anthony Wilson (Wilbo)
and numerous other members of the sayers firm,another being Alan Rankin the Newcastle night club owner.

Wilson is a homosexual phidophile, i know this because i have known of wilson for decades and used to deal with him untill i beat him up and got rid of him when i realised he was so bad, Wilson and Fisher are big buddies, Wilson is also a blackmailer who married a well known prostitute for the sole purpose of using her in his blackmail schemes he always has on the go, they now have 2 children for whatever purposes.

Prior to me going to prison on that last sentence i personally stopped the sale of Crack Cocaine ever being sold in this city, and none was sold, ever, and i did my best to stop the Heroin and kept it down, i could`nt stop it altogether as it had such a hold already in this city but i managed to stop it getting any bigger for sure, within 2 years of me being locked up Heroin went up by 300% in Newcastle.

Newcastle has been the stopping point for most of all the large shipments of cocaine smuggled into this country of late and all of the monies that has been made from them tons of cocaine has went into our local ecomony and corrupted the officials that run this city` to a level that is on par with the coruption that went on in the 70`s in new york with the officials that ran that city and the mafia, Newcastle is exactly the same now ! it is at a stage where the offials are in on the cover up of all the murders committed in our region, i know this for certain because of the covering that has went on with the murders my side has been accused of, they have took the money and now do as they are told ! and the ones at the top in all of this are freemason ex cops and a criminal network that they have always controlled from their police work, a british mafia ! and its real, and controled by a group of bad masonic bent ex cops.

Desmond "Dessie" Noonan' (1959-March 19, 2005) was a British organized crime figure in Manchester who acted as a political fixer for the Noonan crime family. He and his younger brother, Dominic Noonan, were suspected by police to be responsible for at least 25 unsolved murders during their 20 year reign in Manchester's underworld.

Mainly because of the very dangerous contacts Desmond Noonan had made during his reign as 'Britains No. 1 Crime Boss' his family were at the end of the 1990s known as 'one of the most notorious crime families in British history'.

Born in Moss Side, Manchester, England, Noonan emerged from utter poverty and into the criminal scene with his brothers Damian and Dominic Noonan. His criminal career began as a doorman in the early 1980s; his reputation as a fighter and his overall appearance gave him massive credibility on the club doors of Manchester.

Desmond then started to put his own men on the doors and by the late 1980s 80% of Manchesters nightlife security-wise was controlled by Desmond Noonan and the rest of the Noonan family. Around this time Dominic Noonan was jailed for 15 years for his part in an armed robbery at a bank in Cheetham, Manchester. During his imprisonment, still in control of the crime family, Damian and Derek Noonan were forging links with other notable Manchester gangs including The Cheetham Hill Crew and Salford.

The Noonan family tended to have nothing to do with the notorious Moss - Side gangs, although Desmond was part of a group of men who provided the black gangs with guns and other weapons. After involving himself in Manchesters nightlife, Desmond started to get involved with other criminal circles outside of Manchester, including the I.R.A and A.F.A (anti fascist action). He later on went to other cities to forge strong links with London,Newcastle and Liverpudlian gangs.

Control of organized crime in the city fell to Desmond and his brothers following the 1991 gangland murder of rival leader of the Cheetham Hill Gang, Anthony "White Tony" Johnson, whose murder he was charged with and later acquitted of. Over the next several years, he would face a number of convictions in connection to witness intimidation and jury tampering resulting in key witnesses refusing to testify against himself and other members of the Noonan family.

By the mid 1990's Desmond Noonan was known as a notorious enforcer feared and respected by all who knew him, he was known as a very dangerous and violent man and had many links with a wide range of Britains underworld, apparently making himself untouchable.

In 1995, four years later, Noonan was convicted with violently attacking twin brothers, during which he was reportedly described by the court as psychotic, and sentenced to 33 months imprisonment. The twin brothers later turned out to be London gangland figures who were apparently trying to get involved in Manchester's ever booming drugs and guns trade.

By the end of the 1990s the Noonan family had been linked to 25 gangland murders, dozens of robberies and had a stranglehold on most of the nightclub security in many of the major cities across Great Britain, they had also made over 8 million pounds in bank robberies and security alone.

Desmond Noonan also began to venture into the nightlife of many other cities to gain more wealth, power and respect for the family. He and his brothers Damian and Derek started to acquire business interests in nightclubs in places like Liverpool,London and Newcastle.

The fact that Dessie had the audacity to try and do business in other cities with other gangland figures gave him a lot of credibility and respect and soon he was becoming involved with a number of notable crime bosses including the likes of, the Liverpool drugs baron Curtis Warren, London gangster and friend of the Krays, Dave Courtney and head of Newcastles most biggest crime family boss [[Paddy Conroy ] Having friends like these only made the Noonan family stronger.

As anyone who's seen shirtless Newcastle supporters on a winter evening at St James' Park will testify, Geordie men are made of hardy stock.

But the macho bravado of Toon Army members pales in comparison to the actions of Geordie underworld veteran Paddy Conroy, the first figure profiled in MacIntyre's Underworld.

Out on license from an 11-year jail sentence for torture, kidnapping and escape, Conroy's conditional release is complicated by a rival gangland family taking out a contract on his life. His re-appearance at a time of turf warfare between rival outfits threatens to worsen the fragile balance of power, due to his stated aim to re-establish his profile and reputation within the criminal fraternity.

Although now middle-aged and resembling a leaner Geoffrey Hughes, his eye patch (worn due to his eye haemorrhaging as a result of prison staff delaying necessary treatment for cataracts - or so he alleges) is a permanent reminder of the brigandish nature of his lifestyle.

The show starts with Paddy playing daddy to his two sons, Buster, 11, and Jack, 1. Long-suffering wife of 30 years Maureen also features in this homely sequence. However, as the couple recount the tale of how they met, it's further evidence of the roughness of their environment. Conroy used to mug Maureen and steal her pocket money; unsurprisingly, she didn't fancy a date with him when he asked. But Paddy wouldn't take no for an answer and one day, in his own words, he "grabbed her by the hair and took her home ... You think I'm jokin', don't ya!".

Maureen's expression indicated he wasn't.

Conroy's father ran a criminal enterprise in which Paddy served his apprenticeship and would later inherit. This provides some insight into his almost nostalgic view of historic criminality. Of his youth he states that "the villain was just a part of life in those days, especially from the more deprived areas. It wasn't considered a bad thing unless you did bad villainy, immoral things". Conroy makes a distinction between "gangsters" and villains. To him, a villain is just a product of his environment and upbringing, whereas "a gangster lives in a world of his own, an imaginary world".

Conroy denies MacIntrye's contention he might be perceived as a dangerous man ("I don't think so - if you don't have problems with me. But if you come attack us, then I'll be a dangerous man"), and understands the current underworld difficulties as resulting from the new breed - those operating outside accepted criminal codes: "There's loads of families from our sort of background who are good people, but you get families who are villains with no morals and not fit to walk this fookin' Earth!"

Paddy considers himself a protector in the local community, and it says much for his standing (or, perhaps, the fear he inspired) that when he was jailed for violence against the police in the 1980s, thousands of people demonstrated on the streets for his release. Right-hand man Bullock even went to the extreme of climbing to the top of the Tyne Bridge to protest, but only managed four hours because "it was cold - freezing, proper freezing". Conroy chides Bullock for not staying up there longer, although the latter defends himself by saying, "Well, it wasn't planned properly. Next time I'll take a sleeping bag and a flask!"

But despite Conroy's bravado and criminal heritage, he's clearly feeling the pressure of the license conditions and the price on his head. He wears a bullet proof vest in public, and his associates constantly monitor his surroundings. When the security lapses, as happens when Conroy returns from a night at the track, he starts to panic. After shouting, "Where the fook are ya?" repeatedly into his phone, he skulks in the lobby until his driver turns up, greeting him with, "Cunt! You cunt!", before berating him further off mic.

Unable to retaliate in the way he had before his sentence, Conroy employs various means to deal with the tension, such as escaping to his country getaway 30 miles outside Newcastle. On his allotment he grows vegetables, and to MacIntyre's surprise is particularly proud of the trophies he's won for his prize leeks.

But even in his hideaway he has to be careful of his activities. As an example, his lifetime ban from using firearms means even a spot of rabbit hunting would result in an infringement of his license terms.

As Bullock, MacIntyre and Conroy chat in a shed, two associates bring in a couple of rabbits they've shot, and Bullock guts them by the riverbank. The shots of his handiwork are intercut with MacIntyre asking Paddy if he's religious (he's not) and whether he thinks he's going to heaven (he does). To those who reckon he's going to hell he retorts, "They can think what they like - it's between me and the big fella!"

Conroy also uses other methods to relax, having smoked cannabis since he was 16. The green-fingered approach he uses on his leeks also applies to his cannabinoids ("Better to grow your own. See that: it's fookin' organic!").

But the cannabis and leeks are insufficient to keep his ferocity in check. When his family plot in the local cemetery was desecrated in 1994 by a rival gang, his inability to tolerate any affront to his reputation or control his anger led to him committing the acts that resulted in his 11-year sentence.

Billy Collier, a criminal who worked for a rival family, was allegedly heard boasting in a local pub he'd been paid £5,000 to dig up the grave, chop parts of the body up and put them through Conroy's window. After that, it was only a matter of time before Paddy and his henchmen exacted their revenge.

While the pain felt by Conroy is understandable - with him unable to hold back tears as he recounts the story - the retaliation he had planned for those alleged to be responsible is chilling, issuing his threat head-on to the camera: "I would have killed the whole family. All their loved ones. I would have murdered every single one of them if any of them had done that to my family".

Within days, with only the digging up the grave part of the alleged plan carried out, Collier was kidnapped at gunpoint from a local shop and tortured. He was abandoned in a warehouse by his attackers after having his teeth pulled out with pliers. Conroy denies being behind the amateur dentistry ("I just beat him up. Hit him with a stick, pool cues, hit him with a gas bottle. He got a beating but not a great beating"), but admits to driving him 400 yards and leaving him at the location where his teeth would be torn out.

Conroy was arrested, but managed to escape en route to court, and was on the run overseas before being caught by Interpol. Security was much tougher on his return: to be on the safe side, a 17 vehicle convoy, aeroplane, helicopter, snipers and a gunboat made sure he kept his court appearance.

However, his holidays in the sun did nothing to moderate his temperament, and Conroy cracked under pressure in court, attacking the prosecuting lawyer. As a result he was dragged out past the jury by four prison officers, which, as Conroy concedes, "didn't help" his innocent plea. He was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 11 years, although Maureen continues to accept Paddy's version of the attack on Billy Collier.

Conroy struggles to process the changes made in the Newcastle landscape in the decade of his incarceration, and also finds unfamiliar the spectacle of a new godfather (John Henry Sayers) controlling his former patch ("They say they run Newcastle, but no one fookin rules me"). With the old-skool underworld against him, Paddy is forced to make new alliances with local Triad gangs (the "new breed" which he had earlier railed against), and not without reason. A confrontation with 14 members of the Sayers gang led to Paddy having to endure a severe beating, in the knowledge that to fight back could have resulted in his death, and to involve the police (strictly against his criminal code) would have meant he'd contravened his license conditions.

The ongoing feuds and precarious situation cause Paddy to worry about his eldest son Buster, ("One day you will be the bossman") and that he'll inherit the internecine feuds in the same way he did from his own father. Buster is only now realising the extent of his father's criminal lifestyle. His copy of Zoo magazine shows a pixellated snapshot of dad alongside a cover feature on "Britain's deadliest gangs" ("Meet the men who run YOUR manor"). This side of his father he finds hard to understand, with the additional implications of what it means for his own future.

One reason for Buster's concern over his family's criminal heritage may be the example of his cousin Dylan, who at 22 has already been jailed four times. Despite Paddy's assertion that he's a "good lad in general, just bored", Dylan is back in jail within four days of being released from his latest sentence after brandishing two sawn-off shotguns.

Yet despite having a clear understanding of the reality of prison life ("Everyone in there is depressed - whole prisons suffer from depression"), Paddy risks his license conditions being invoked after an unnecessary run-in with the police. During a raid on his sister's house he allows himself to be drawn into a verbal confrontation with an officer and is charged with a public order offence. Unwilling to face court proceedings, Conroy goes on the run again, despite the knowledge he risks a heavier sentence as a consequence. However, this proves to be unnecessary, and somewhat farcical, as his 72-day period in hiding turns out to be just to avoid a £130 penalty charge, which is sent through the post to him after he avoided the initial court date.

Despite this good fortune, and the end of his license period meaning Conroy is a free man once again, he's unable to shake off past events - particularly the feud with the Sayles family. Conroy interrupts his cooking of a celebratory family dinner to launch into an uninterrupted four-minute tirade, unintelligible in parts and incoherent in others, where he tries to piece together what may have been slights on his reputation and the intentions of his rivals (his perceptions and thought processes clearly affected by his cannabis use), leaving no doubt he'll retaliate at some point, "and it's coming fookin' shortly, believe you me". His rant culminates in him shouting, "Get that on your fookin' documentary!", before resuming his preparation of the family meal.

At this point, just by giving its subject enough rope, the profile allows the true nature of Conroy to emerge, demonstrating that any performance by an actor of a "gangster" role can never fully convey the menace of intent that an authentic criminal has. Despite certain sequences that humanised him (sequences with his family and on his allotment) and a refusal by MacIntyre to allow a caricature to develop - as would be likely in a Zoo feature - Conroy's inherent brutality continually re-surfaces. His own need to distinguish between his own criminal acts and those of "gangsters" suggests that to some degree he is fully aware of the nature of his lifestyle and its implications, the essence of which it was essential MacIntyre captured in his "fookin' documentary".

Mr Sayers told the court: "My dad came to see me and he said he got the information from a police officer. He is a Freemason and it was a superintendent who told him."

Its funny how Paddy Conroys nephew David Glover was a registered police informer for years and often carried guns around the West End of Newcastle knowing he had police protection, he and a friend once burgled a pub Paddy owned and broke into the safe, he did so on the instructions of the police, in fact he burgled it and set the alarms off, but not to worry the police were on his side..and they let him keep the money and they kept the papers, documents etc,Paddy got a hold of a few local burglars and threatend to torure them, and they told them it was Davy Glover, what did Paddy do NOTHING, you see Paddy was prepared to put with Glovers informing etc, as he needed him to intimidate and bully people, he even gave a job to Glovers mother in a cafe he owned, Glovers mother is Paddys sister in law, also Paddys right hand man Bulloch or the "Bull" as Paddy calls him shot and blew off Davy Glovers father in laws both legs, and not because of Glover being an informer, but because he had an argument with him a a pub when he was drunk in fact they were good friends.
