Isle of Man

Just a thought - maybe the propaganda dept at the UKMA can add The Isle of Man to its list of countries still using imperial (the ever increasing list).

Also - 10 yrs on from the year that it got banned in the UK they still use "gill" measures on all spirits. My guess is that being outside the EU a pub could use 25ml or gills or both - however they've chosen to use gills.

And miraculously there was no social unrest or visiting europeans getting all upset.

You might have guessed that I've done one of my cultural holiday things again!

================================================
Fantasist portion for Daniel Jackson:

The gills were simply 'metric in disguise'/'imperial afterthough' (delete as approriate, depending on mood)

Also- although the bottles of, for example, vodka were exactly the same as in a pub using metric optics the vodka did not taste as nice as soon as it flowed through the apparatus that had an imperial notation on it.

And they played records that were not 12" in diameter and people there measured them all the time.

Steve,

That was a difficult one to cross-check. I went to my favourite search engine and did a search on ("isle of man", gill, alcohol), only to discover that one of the IoM's most prominent civil servants was a Mr Gill who featured all the time. It ruined my search :-(

Martin,
Many search engines have a way of excluding pages that contain certain words. On Yahoo, just type the word prefixed with a hyphen. You can find out this Mr. Gill's first name and then exclude it from your query.

Or (get this for "radical") you can take my word for it!

On things that I have an opinion about, or a hunch about I will say so in such a way (ie that it is my opinion, or belief).

On observations I have made physically I will reproduce the evidence.

Every single pub *that I went to* (inc the hotel) served spirits in fractions of gills. The displayed price list also showed this.

No one complained.
