Half Gallon Quarter Acre
Bob,
Regarding your question of October 17th @ 10:27 a.m.

I heard four men in the diner talking about a “half gallon quarter acre.” They sounded like africaners. I didn’t get a chance to ask them what they meant. Do you know what they meant?

Bob, the “Half Gallon Quarter Acre” is supposedly what most australian working family men aspire to. It is occasionally referred to as “The Australian Dream” in contrast to “The American Dream.”
As you can guess, it refers to the australian family man’s supposed aspiration to eventually be well off enough to have a standard glass of beer a day, and to own a standard building plot with a house on it.
The standard glass of beer in an australian saloon is:
138.240 cu.” = 1/2 imp.gal.
Her Majesty’s Dominion of New Holland uses improved measure, not fluid measure or dry measure.
The standard building plot in Australia is:
10890 sq.’ = 1/4 stt. acre
It appears that the 1 imp.pot. and 1 stt. rood are either not used in Australia, or used infrequently.
138.240 cu.” = 1 imp.pot.
10890 sq.’ = 1 stt. rood

P.S.
Bob,
I’m not questioning what you heard, but australians don’t sound anything like africaners, or even englishmen.
