Hiller an Englishman by any chance?

"Roach-bellied stock"? Over here those are known as a "perch-belly". I guess a roach looks much like a perch? That was a very popular style of butt stock on target rifles circa 1900, especially offhand. Shows that, even for a child's rifle, Haenel was clearly thinking shooting.
