You are correct, the adjustment is for first stage length; or more to the point, it regulates the transition point between the first and second stages of the pull. Contrary to what is often said/written, there is not a true weight adjustment built in.
On the guns with two screws, the rear screw is the adjuster, and the front one serves only to lock it in place--it must be loosened before adjusting, and re-tightened afterwards. The plastic trigger blades generates sufficient friction to hold the adjuster in place, so a separate locking screw is not necesaary.
