trigger housing out. Need ya'lls help. Will any degreaser work or do I have to have special degreaser? Used carb cleaner on a rag to clean trigger housing, but worried about the rest of the gun. Any help greatly appreciated.

I use simple green

But not the stuff you get at Home Depot. If you have a Grainger's near you, ask for the Aircraft Simple Green. Great stuff! No solvents, won't harm finishes, safe to put down the drain. Hell, it doesn't even sting in a cut.

I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

It's apart and completely nasty. Piston seal once cleaned looks like it

will be in good shape. The inner goo is so black and sticky it's a wonder the gun shot. Trigger housing and parts soaking in alcohol.

Ready to put trigger housing back together. What kind of light oil should I lube it with?

So far this has been fun.

Something very light, and keep Moly out of triggers

November 6 2009, 3:43 PM

Some older trigger designs rely on a bit of "stiction" to keep them safe. In my opinion, moly does not belong in trigger mechanisms, but that's just me.

I use valve oil for brass musical instruments. If you have a music store near you, ask for it. Or you could use sewing machine oil, if such a thing is still available.

I forget what the BSF 55 trigger looks like, but a properly designed trigger should need very little lubrication to function right, and you don't want to put something in there that will atract and hold dust and dirt. In no time, it'll wind up looking like it did before you cleaned it

I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Hey Mike, did you pick that gun up at Roanoke?

November 6 2009, 4:18 PM

I saw in someone's pictures that Lance had a 55 on his table. I'm pretty sure I sold that gun to Lance 4 or 5 years ago. Is it yours now?

I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Speaking out of turn...

November 6 2009, 4:28 PM

...but since Lance is from DA 'HOOD (thanks GB) and was at my table in Roanoke, I can definitively say that particular BSF 55 still lives at Lance's house.

There were several others for sale at the show, including one NIB in its original Air Rifle Headquarters box from the '70's. Ol' Robert Law at ARH was an early pioneer of tuning springers...which in his case meant cramming an entire cannister of moly inside the gun.

Thanks Mike D, good to know.

I got concerned, first when I saw it in the pictures, perhaps for sale, and second, when Mike in NC said the innards were full of black gunge. (Not how I remembered it.)

I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Mike, your hillbilly roots are showing, a brief Ebonics update....

November 7 2009, 10:19 AM

from the deep south !! To be proper one ways "the hood" not "my hood" . "the" infers the speaker's own hood . The implication is if you say it then it is yours, everyone automatically understands. Now everyone can communicate more clearly....(:

PS, Do not get carried away, I would not refer to the lovely Beth as Yo , H*"....not if you like your airguns....

Eruditely correct and always helpful,
