Calling all early Diana/MGR experts...

Hello, Gents -

I thought I was transitioning away from airguns (and sold off quite a lot of hard-won prizes), however find that the addiction is a tough one to kick. I recently found this early Diana (still on it's way to me), so thought I'd pitch out a few pics in the interest of finding out what it is that I bought. Evidently a militia style gun, seller claims it to be .25 caliber. Naturally well used, as I'm assuming it's likely an early 20th century piece.

Only markings (according to seller) is the MGR logo. Other pics may (or may not) speak for themselves. I'd be very appreciative of any feedback/identification (early GEM?) that anyone might be able to offer!

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. Seller claims it cocks & shoots fine, only issue is the cracked wrist. Not sure if it's smoothbore, or too many other details, and will happily fill you all in (if interested) upon arrival. I'm curious to see how well it throws a ..25 pellet!

Regards,

Matthew Noe

Hi Matthew. Great find!

This rifle was imported into the UK under the name "The New Champion". It was apparently based on M&G's 1905 Patent and was the first air rifle to use the type of breech detent lock-up which is still standard today.

The above information comes from an article by John Atkins in Air Gunner magazine from February 1992. You can see it HERE.

and yes, it is ironic...in myriad ways. This is certainly a 'sticky' hobby, many avenues to explore - all having their respective pleasures & mysteries.

Nice find...

Note the external rails beneath the tube to guide the cocking link. I have a somewhat similar Millita-style gun with the same rails, marked only "Patent" nothing else.
