Mpc 2000 xl won't read mpc 2000 disk

by Dr. Fangaz

I'm having a major problem with my mpc 200xl reading 200 formatted disks. When I load a disk with a program, sounds and sequences saved on a 2000 in the 2000xl strange info is read. The info isn't overstanding. It looks like symbols and letters. The only way for me to retrieve any of my production off of the disks is by loading the floppy disks into my usb floppy drive to the pc and then transfer them to cd as data. I have to then use a cd rom drive to load them. Is there anyway I can solve this problem other than the way I'm doing so?

Thanks in advance

Under the power socket it says 115V ....2 A, 230V.....1A.

SP 1200 output problem

by

Peace y'all

The following is a common problem I'm sure, and not too serious. The 7th output on my SP sounds very distorted and you cannot really hear samples coming from it.

I've heard somewhere this is an internal issue that can be easily fixed, apparently the way the pads were designed, they are prone to get loose and malfunction in this way. It's an easy job for an electriction or if you know how to do it yourself.

I just want to confirm that that is the problem, any input would be appreciated. If you've had this issue let it be known, good looks.

My view of his technique...

by Anonymous

It depends what record you´re listening...but basically he does a lot of
sampling from vinyl records (no shit!). Im not sure if he has recorded any
live bass playing in studio, probably not that much, if at all.

He used to use Sp-12/Sp-1200 with s900. I believe he uses the
lowpass filters of the s900 to get the basslines or he chops them
and plays them loosely with the drums.
Nowadays he has been producing with 2000xl.

Hope this helps and please correct me if Im wrong.

Re: My view of his technique...

by JaeOne3345

On many of his early beats he was simply using a low pass filter from the s950 on loops.

Later on with albums like petestrumentals and soul survivor 1, he is programming bass in the sp1200 using multipitch. You can hear some of the artifacts in the bass on many tracks on petestrumentals that comes from pitching it up and down.

SP1200 back panel very hot + metronome issues

by Spinx

Just got an original E-Mu SP1200 (7030 version) and have two questions:

The area around where the power supply is on my SP1200's back panel is very hot after only an hour or so of use. Is this normal or should I be worried?

I can't get the metronome to sound. I've set it to 1/4 and then go into record mode but hear nothing other than the drum sounds through the mix out. I thought the answer might be to use the seperate met/click out, but this seems to disable the mix out and is permanently on full volume (the met volume knob does nothing). Can anyone help? Or, god forbid, is there a problem with my SP?

Thanks in advance.

SP1200 Disk Error!!!!!!

by

Hey all,

Yeah so, I'm new to the SP and have a few old factory disks that came with it....pretty crummy samples though!
I went and bought some blank disks (TDK MF-2DD) in an attempt to sample my own sounds. When I start the SP with a blank disk it just comes up with "Disk Read Error"...

Anyone know what's going on??? This is really starting to do my head in...

Yours frustratedly, Dandroid

Yeah, I tried that already...I've followed the instructions to the letter!

Activate disk module check....check. Key in 9....check.

All that happens is I get the option of; 1 = Cassette...aaaaand 2 = MidiDisk. Neither of these choices works when I push any of the options!!!
I have an awful feeling there is something wrong with this SP.....at no point has it given me any message about formatting software...

Sucks to be me...now I have to hope I can find someone to give it a service!

Re: Disk Read Error.....

Theres probably nothing wrong with your sp, because i had the same problem when I started to use mine.

Try inserting a disk with the OS in to the sp and boot up, after that put another disk and then format/copy.
If it doesnt boot the OS from the first disk
then the disk is probably corrupt or something... Good luck!

Just thought this might help...

the last guy is right on. sounds like you are trying to boot up to the disk you want to format, but like they said, you need to boot up to a disk that has previosly been formatted. Like the factory sample disk or any other disk that already has samples/sequences saved to it.

Sample Disc

by

Wasup Fam

New to the Sp-1200 so forgive my ignorance. It seems pretty easy to figure out how to use it but I have a small request. Upon purchasing the unit I received 1 disc that has all kicks and another that has all snares.

After loading and recording the kick (Seg 00), I load the snare disc, push play to listen to the already recoreded kick but instead the newly loaded snare plays.

I read the manual but was unable to locate this.

Any help is GREATLY apprecited

Peace

HOW TO: longer sampling time without upgrading memory ...Hot Tip

by PromoSP1200

We used to take our Records, Tapes , Cd, and speed them up before sampling Into the SP1200. By speeding them up before you sample it in you can then slow them down in the SP1200 and your sample will be longer! giving you a longer sample to play with!!

Re: HOW TO: longer sampling time without upgrading memory ...Hot Tip

by Dr. Fangaz

Yeah this is nothing new. But what about the noise frequency you'll also get when slowing down the sample? Also, what if you have a long sample; slow it down but the sample isn't slow enough in tuning the pitch down because of the speed used to get all the sample into the sp 1200? I've experience this back in 94, so I upgrade sampling loops using the mpc along with the sp.

sp12 buzz noise problem

by newseneus

i have a problem with my sp12. i get this buzz sort of hum sound out of it (all channels and main mix). like a bad ground sound maybe. the sp works fine, but this sound is an issue. i have to set the threshold level pretty high when sampling, other wise this static noise whatever it is, triggers the sampler to start sampling. also it sounds a little too shitty, not the grit it's suppose to have. on channel number 6 the buzz is twice as loud as all the others, so i definitely know there is a problem. any thoughts as to what's wrong and how to fix it? thanks much....

You should check is there some adapters or stuff like that nearby. Once I had a turntable adapter too close my Sp1200 and it caused a hummig-like sound to the sequencer. If you cant figure it out, then take it to somebody who can. Good luck searching.

Found sp-12 for $20..buuuut

by keytronic

Honest to god. No joke. Here's the thing:

Broken..I think.

Truth be told, I'm not very familiar with the sp series (I am more c64/emax II/amiga steez) but I figured I'd ask some true heads before I invest some serious money into this piece.

Turns on. Loud humming noise. Hear the metronome just fine. No sound when I strike the pads.

Checked all outputs. No sounds anywhere. Tried to trigger through MIDI, nothing. Tried to load sounds from the 1541 drive. Nothing. The sample bar is all black meaning over 100% input volume (without anything plugged in mind you.)

Question: am I at a loss? I've got some crazy ideas for this thing and want to put it to good use.

Thanks a million.

The level never reaches a high enough volumn to capture a good sample. Even if I adjust levels and turn the gain all the way to the right. The sample sounds fuzzy or distorted when I play it back through the mix out from any channel. I'm trying to fix this myself. Looking for an online how to fix the sample function using maybe a few tools and a sodering iron.. If anyone has had this issue let me know how I can fix this I would appreciate it.

Start-up Problem with SP-12

by

Hello. I have developed a problem with my SP that has me baffled. Basically after a very long session one night, the machine froze (no buttons or commands would work). I shut everything off. Since then, whenever I power up one of 3 things happens. Most of the leds light up but the display shows solid bars, no leds light up and the display is the same, or the display slowly loads the startup with the os info, etc. but it never fully loads. Could this be the power supply failing? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have no insight to this dilema. Thanks`

by HAZE

Its easy to use but pretty stupid. I dont think you can load stuff into it. It works like fruityloops with some basic drums. I downloaded it and then deleted it.

Looking to sell sp12 turbo

by

Looking to sell a Emu Sp 12turbo with the expanded sampling time(think around six seconds). Machine works fine only missing a slider knob.Hate to see it go but I need too many other odds n ends in my studio right now. Im in the LA area would prefer to sell to someone around here.Price is Best Offer but dont low ball on some bullshit(400 or 500 bucks is too low!)Email me with an offer and if its goodwill go from there. Peace

Oh almost forgot the sound. The machine definetly lives up to its name by having the crunchiest drums Ive ever heard (Ive owned a MPC 60, Asr 10 , and S950)if you put the right break in there it definetly will satisfy the low fi needs of any drum or break beat freak!!

a beginner

Ok well I have some many questions I want to ask but I will try to keep it short.I use to have my own computer and I had some music production tools on it(can't remember which one)and it well became a passion of mine til my pc crashed and I lost everything.I don't even know to much about this stuff but I would really like to do this more and with out my pc I don't have any producion tools or equipment so I was wondering if someone could tell me what is the best equipment is for a beginner?and what the differences is between a sampler and a mixer?and I have been looking for a good drum machine but I am trying to get one that has alittle of everything if their is one like that?Like the MPC-4000 does this machine have a built in mixer/sampler/sequencer?

I don't have anyone in my personal life to ask for help so I like to ask anyone I can because I have a passion for this and many many ideas that I would love to put to work. Thanks to anyone that helps me!!!!

keep it real

tips for a beginner

by

Wow man I can't believe no one answered you, its been 4 months. Well the best piece to start with is a sampling drum machine, like you mentioned. I recommend Akai MPC series samplers, MPC 1000, 3000/XL, 4000/XL in particular. Depends on your price range.

Drum machine samplers 'sample' sounds, either live, or from records/cds/tapes/other media and usually places them on various pads. With MPC's and you can truncate (cut/chop) the sound, reverse the sound, apply effects. You build a library of sounds and arrange each part into the sequencer that comes with the MPC. The MPC records this data and can also transmit it via MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) to other machines such as controller keyboards, a more detailed computer sequencer, effects processor, a digital recorder (4-track/8-track, etc.) or a mixer.

A mixer does not come included with these samplers. What a mixer does is process all the signals coming in from your equipment simultaneously so that you can adjust the sound levels, pan and EQ (adjust) bass mids and treble for each sound.

People be fiendin' for the E-mu SP-1200 sampler/drum machine because it has analog filters that are no longer commercially manufactured; this giving it a fat warm quality that has become lost to newer generation digital samplers with higher sampling rates and resolution.

There's cheaper and even simpler samplers on the market, like the SP-606, BOSS samplers, etc. I recommend frequenting music production internet forums and message boards, like NEVAHMIND, mpc-forums.com, futureproducers.com and others to pick up tips and see if anyone is selling gear. Als search on guitarcenter.com, prosound.com, sweetwater.com or on your local craigslist.org page for used gear.

You'll have to get studio monitors (speakers) and either hook into your home stereo or buy an amplifier. I recommend getting a mixer eventually. If your machine doesn't have a CD burner you'll need to get a recorder. And a computer with a sequencer won't hurt. As far as the music making gear an MPC will be all you'll need as a beginner.

Good luck patna, keep pursuing music,

Xandre

Triggering 2x s950 samples from SP1200

by Dizzy Daytura

Hi there...

I'm really hoping you can shed some light for me. I can trigger one 950 sample (e.g. bassline) from an SP pad, but can't seem to trigger additional samples on adjacent pads.

What I have done on the S950 is:
- Assigned a different keygroup to the 2nd sample e.g. KG2
- Assigned the sample to the SP pad e.g. Low Key (& High Key) G1# 44
- Assigned a new output e.g. output 2
- Chosen one-shot on pg15 in EDIT PROGRAM

In the MIDI section/function I have set OMNI to off and have checked (on pg3) that when I hit the SP pad the midi message is being received.

The basic midi channel on the S950 is set to 1 and I have tried offsetting feature in EDIT PROGRAM which has not helped (I was really just troubleshooting here!)...

On the SP1200, I programmed the MIDI PARAMETERS (>>SetUp>>22) to Basic Channel 1 & set it to POLY mode and did not pitch keys....

What else should I try??? I basically want to trigger more than one sample on s950 and of course, be able to press different SP1200 pads and here the different 950 samples...

What to do??? It seems that this is definitely possible because I keep hearing of people who have allegedly had success...but I just cannot seem to get more information from them directly!

I will be mad grateful for some helpful assistance...
Many thanks,
D.

Grey SP 1200

by

I have a grey SP and I'm looking to unload it this week. I'm looking for $1100, I know I can get that from a music store in NYC. It works perfectly, the display is still bright blue, no dead pixels at all. I have a manual and a floppy with the original sounds plus extra floppies, the power cord and (6) 1/4" cables. I still have my tables and 4 track and all my records but this is one piece that doesn't get used like it used to and I'm buying a home so I can use the cash. I wish I could hold out for more 'cause I know that the music store will wind up selling it for more it took a while to make this decision so the longer I wait the less likely I am to go through with it.

Call if you're interested.

SP 1200 Mix out problem

by CthepowersthatB

I am running my Sp staight into an ordinary amp without a mixer
I haven't saved up for a mixer yet and was just wondering one thing.
When i connect the mix out to my amp, the sound only comes out of my left speaker, but When i connect the cable to one of the channels the sound is fine coming out of both speakers. Does it sound like i have a problem, or do i just need more equipment?

nothing wrong

by klear.koat

There's nothing wrong with you SP. The mix out sends a MONO signal. Your amp, by default, IS looking for a STEREO signal. You should plug a Y-connector to the SP's mixout. This will give you Left and Right signal to go into your amp...

SP direct to speakers

by

On a similar note, I don't even have an amplfier, I connected my SP directly to two studio monitors using the y-cable. Is this okay? Will it damage the SP? Just a preoccupation I've had, any feedback would be appreciated, peace
