Wheat King Radio

by Deb

I was listening to the game on the Wheat Kings play by play station.
Do they use a phone line from the rink to the radio station. The commercials are clear - the play-by-play is hard to hear from my connection. If the Wheat Kings play by play are using a phone line for home games they are in the pre historic age.

Kootenay NEED a Justin Kanigan...

by Justin Kanigan Fan

Saskatoon Blades don't know what they've got. Justin Kanigan needs to be playing on a better coach-orientated team. Dickie sure lives up to his name. He doesn't have a clue what is going on half the time and the team is suffering. Kootenay Ice needs a Justin Kanigan, to bring life to the ice and so the kid can show us what he REALLY is about!!

Adrian Foster

by

. Adrian Foster – Center - Saskatoon (WHL), 6’0”, 185 lbs., Previous Ranking: #11 The recent number 1 selection in the 2001 entry draft has an almost uncertain future. He appeared in training camp with the Devils to work on his conditioning and to see where he stands with his abdominal injury that has limited him to only 12 games in the WHL over the last two years. Supposedly fully recovered full his original injury, Adrian suffered another non-related injury that could put him on the shelf for the immediate future. He will be returned to the Blades when everything is better and initial reports say he looked good during drills and games in camp. Foster should have a good year in the juniors and hopefully, when he is ready, impact the Devils and the rest of the NHL.

The measure of a true fan

by Robster

IMHO Is (corny or not) the one who sticks with his team through good times and bad. Also, you may well have defence problems right now but what about the rest of the guys who'er out there crashing and banging every game, surely they alone are worth supporting.

We lost our WHL franchise "Kelowna Wings" in the mid 80's when it headed towards Spokane it was to be many more years before WHL hockey returned to Kelowna. We're so lucky to have this level of hockey, its foolish to not support it.

Finally, and for the record... your team were here in kelowna last saturday and steamed hard into the Rockets. Yes MH lost but guys like Hollweg and St Jaques, bouwmeister and others were working their sacks off.

I was totally impressed with their work ethic they never once gave up, maybe if you'd have seen them play here you would have been too. No they didnt win but they were no slouches either they did you proud, and deserve your continued support.

Believe me, I realize that the players you mentioned do work hard and perform every game. They are not our problem. Our problem is the older players (19 and 20 year olds) who are doing nothing. Also, I am not sure this team is being coached properly, and our GM is an idiot. That doesn't mean I don't still love the Tigers, I have been a season ticket holder for 20 years and have seen both glory (2 Memorial Cup championships in a row) and the bottom of the bucket (last 4 years in a row). I just don't want to see this team ground into the dust by poor ownership and management.

MY Thoughts on:

by ABU Tiger Fan

last nights game between Vancouver and Tigers. Vancouver game out and caught the Tigers flat, and scored 3 quick goals. And as always the Tigers have to play claw back hockey. Van puts Jaeger in net, his first start in Van, and Tigers put in Nastiuk so Kettles wouldn't get beat by Yaeger. The tigers did claw back, Yaeger taken out and Choukulous put in, and this fellow stood on his head. The Tigers where all over him, or that what it sounded like on the radio. And as a 20 year old goalie should do he saved the game. I thought the Tigers play well enough to win the last two games, but they have some problems that need to be address, right now.
Maser, I know you and Carriere are best of friends, but I think you know what needs to be done. There are 3000 season ticket holders in the Hat, and I think you owe it to them, it is decision time. Just some food for thought.

READ THE CURRENT THREADS BEFORE STARTING NEW ONES!!

by KG

This evening, I counted EIGHT new threads started to cover just THREE stinkin' games tonite, plus numerous new threads addressing a topic discussed within the three threads prior to it. There were FIVE separate threads covering the Giants/Tigers game alone.

WHAT'S UP WITH THIS! Is there any good reason for this nonsense outside of pure willful ignorance? There IS a "RESPOND TO POST" link at the bottom of every string page that you people need to start using.

This stuff has been going on all freakin' weekend. As a result, viable and valuable threads are history before even a full day has elapsed. There is only room for 50 threads on a page in this forum. Every time a new thread is started, the thread at the bottom gets flushed down the archive toilet. Whatever discussion, however lively, interesting, or important that was going within it is immediately halted.

I know it's a helluva a lot to ask of some of you, but could you please just stop to read a bit down the page before you get your panties in a wad to ask a question or make a comment? If the general topic of your interest is the least bit current, 9 times out of 10 you'll find an active string about it within the last 50 threads (unless, of course a bunch of cretins already bumped it into the archives with bunch of harebrained new threads).

Starting unnecessary new threads is very poor forum etiquette and is as ignorant and inconsiderate as refusing to wait for a stoppage in play to take your seat in the middle of a crowded section. Before posting a game score, update, or recap, PLEASE just look down the page and see if there isn't already an on-going string for that game. If there is, POST TO IT. And before you ask a question, go thru the current page of posts (if not the next previous 50 archived posts). Chances are you'll find what you seek much faster than you think without putting someone to the trouble of replying.

IF YOU REALLY WANTED TO SAVE THREADS.....

by me

shouldn't you have posted this under the offending threads? that way this nonhockey related post would have been where it applied.

also there is a problem with that too ecause if you respond under the thread it seems like it goes unnoticed. i have seen some very interesting contervercial replies just get ignored because clearly they were not seen. then once in awhile the poster posts on top and it gets a response. for example Glen posted some recaps about last nights games under a new thread, if he had posted under the game thread no one would have bothered to look.

If a post seems to be ignored...

by KG

...it is for one of three reasons:

1) it speaks so well by and for itself that no one feels the need to reply;

2) it is so obtuse and silly that no one wishes to acknowlege it; or

3) it has already rolled into the archives because too many ignorant wanks decided to start new threads!

How do you know a post isn't being read? Do you have a "hit counter" the rest of us don't have access to? I'm sure Glen's recap WAS read by many and if there were no responses, it would be safe to assume it fell into one of the above three categories.

Extremely well said, KG.

by

Network 54 does not allow message boards to keep more than 50 threads on the front page. At this time of year the board moves very quickly with many new discussion strings each day. While most of these posts provide a unique topic for a new discussion, many new message strings are still started that could be more appropriately posted as a response to an already existing message string. The board moderators try to delete or "move" repetative "new" messages on score updates, trades, etc before they have a chance to "grow" into multiple active discussion strings if there is already an existing related group of messages a little ways down the page. The best advice is to please check down the page a ways before posting any "new" message. This will help slow down the board, consolidate topical discussions around a single string, and make the board more lively and fun to read for everyone.

but maybe this board has outgrown this format. This board is not the format it is the people who post. you lose some of the spontaneity if you have to go down and search 50 posts to see if someone is already talking about a subject. or if you get ragged on for having missed that someone talked about it already.

Whatever may be lost in spontaneity...

by KG

...is regained tenfold through thoughtful analysis.

Spontaneity is good thing ONLY when exercised by someone with enough acquired expertise in a particular field to know what the hell they're doing, such as a skilled musician, hockey player, communicator, or lover. Without that hard-earned expertise, it comes off as mere childishness.

If I were you I'd be much less concerned about being noticed and more concerned about not wasting others' time with half-baked opinions or questions you're too damn lazy to find the answers for yourse...Oh, wait just a moment.....

by me

this a job here. Some of us have jobs, family, friends and even other hobbies besides hockey message forums. For most of us it is entertainment. A way to share the game of hockey with other fans, and to ask for info or give some that might be of interest to others.
Are you implying that if we all cannot read every post we should not respond to any? Seriously that's bizzare if you really believe that. If you do then IMO you are way too serious about something that should be a very small part of your life.

As for the mediator having a problem I understand that but I also understand human nature and the varying age groups who post on here. Thereby making it virtually impossible to stop some repeat posts on the same page. And it was in good faith and in that spirit that I made a small suggestion.

Some people have lives and can only read SOME of the posts....

by me

We can't all stay up until 2:30 am on the boards

I never said I did not agree with you in some areas...
but if you were so concerned about threads why start a new one yourself? You yourself said that there were several needless starting of posts, why did you not address the issue under the offending post? Thereby not taking up a new thread See we all do it at times, respond to an issue not under the thread.

As for post that do not get responded to and then they ask at the top and 4 or 5 quick responses let's you know that they were relevent and just got overlooked.

I like the board as is but if some of you are so concerned about the new thread issue than I made the simple suggestion that possibly another board format would solve this problem. I can live with people who start new threads either because they did not see or have the time to go down 45 threads read them all and see does any of these remotely cover what they were talking about.

I do not post on this board much and when I do I am careful NOT TO START NEW THREADS. I am however upset at the condescending attitude of some. Case in point you were rather rude to me when I expressed an opinion that differed from yours. I will not respond with childish sarcasm making wild assumptions about someone who I do not know. Just not my style. But you keep it up as you seem to enjoy it

DEAN CLARK IS LIKE YOGURT, SWEET FOR A WHILE, THEN.......

by MOOKIE WILSON 86' METS

Someone asked about Dean Clark. Here is the scoop:
(The following are my opinions and may not be fact).
a. Egomaniac
b. Uses press to chasten his players
c. Can't work with his GM
d. Talks about how great he is "like that one exhibition game in the show really impresses these guys."
e. Plays favorites
f. Doesn't teach skills
g. Likes brown nosers (uses them to spy and cause rifts)
h. Lets his assistants face media in tuff times
i. Hogs the spotlight in good times
j. Doesn't enforce curfew etc. for everyone (2 tiers)
k. Lacks humility
l. Wants to be in charge, but pretends he doesn't
m. Sneaky....see WJHC and Matt Pettinger incident

These are all my opinions after observing him for a while. Perhaps I am wrong.

As well, he was in my opinion, very overrated in Calgary. Look at the talent he had. Remember, the guy inherited the work of Paul Charles, G.J., and Jim Currie. Anyways, someone asked, I told what I feel.

SOME OF THAT IS TRUE

YOU CAN BLAME ANYBODY FOR RECRUITING A KID LIKE PETTINGER.

AS FAR AS GETTING ALONG WITH MCCRIMMON, HELL BE GONE PRETTY QUICK IF HE CANT PLAY NICE. KELLY DOESNT PUT UP WITH THAT STUFF. KELLY IS ALSO NO IDIOT SO I ASSUME HE HAS JUDGED HIS CHARACTER WELL IN ADVANCE. HAVING SAID THAT I DID HEAR THAT KELLY SAID DEAN WAS A BIT COCKY OR ARROGANT. I CANT REMEMBER THE EXACT WORDING. AND HE MENTIONED IT LONG BEFORE DEAN CAME TO BRANDON.

AS FAR AS CURFEWS GO PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING. IF KELLY CATCHES WIND OF IT THE CURFEWS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED AND DEAN WILL BE MADE TO GO TO BED EARLY.

OVERRATED?? MAYBE. THOSE TEAMS WERE PRETTY GOOD AND HE HAD ONE TEAM IN PARTICULAR THAT SHOULDVE WON THE WHOLE THING AND DIDNT.

DID BRENDL GET SPECIAL TREATMENT? I DONT KNOW THAT HE DID. HE WAS IN THE DOGHOUSE QUITE A BIT. BUT I GUESS HE DID USE THE MEDIA TO CHASTISE HIM.

SO SOME OF WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS TRUE. SOME OF IT ISNT.

the goalies

by vancouverman

well tonight the Med Hat goalie was absolutely horrible 3 goals in a matter of 3-4 minutes - not sure how long but not very long. Giants new goalie made some good saves and then gave up two but really not his fault. We had this defenseman Adelain who handed the puck right to the Medicine Hat guy standing almost in front of the net so, equally your goal tending and our defensemen made it the score it was in the first. Jackson of the giants didn't play to bad - still forgets sometimes that he is playing in the WHL not minor hockey - lots of comments about that aspect of his game. Not sure what is wrong with Tyson Mulock - comes out sometimes with great determination and then like he is lost and skates like he is a bundle of nerves or afraid to make a mistake - maybe he still thinks he is in Med Hat - but no excuse get with it. Marach the captain also played well at times but then same of mentioned before about Mulock. At times the giants looked like a 3rd year team and then ops sorry first year again. Jackson got thrown out of the game due to stupidity - retalieated and slashed the Med guy got 2 minutes and then as he skated to the penalty box wrapped his stick on the ice to ONLY receive a 10 minute misconduct - maybe he thought he was rappin or something - stupid things like that will be the cause of losing. TJ Mulock scored the winner tonight as the Med Hat goalie was sprawled all over the ice and just put it in. I must say that the giants tender at the end of the game final 1 minutes probably saved the game for us with good work from Mulock (9), Beech (7) DeSosa and can't remember who else. Actually Lupal of Med Hat hocked Tyson Mulock with about 5 seconds to go and if he hadn't the score would have been 7-5 and the net was empty. Entertaining game anyhow. WAY TO GO GIANTS

what game where you watching?

by vantigerfan

The Tiger goalie was left out to dry. On the winning goal he made THREE great saves in the 30 seconds before Mullock was allowed to stand in front untouched and bury it. The tigers defence was brutal. Rawlyk was particularly awful, and I'm being nice. Schef was the goat on two goals. Chvolka is completely lost. Tiger forwards refuse to come back and pick-up checks in their own end. Giants were allowed second and third chances standing in front all night.

Team defence is how you can judge coaching. Loucks is either not getting through or his idea of a defensive system is have his forwards stick-check from the red line back.

by vancouver fan

that you watched. And I certainly don't disagree with you. I was stating that our defense was brutal as well. #23 whom got 1st star gave the puck away 2-3 times in our won end and ended up with Hollwegs first goal - right out in front of our goalie. then he did the same thing again and probably again. Your goalie as i stated stunk and so did our defense. I saw nothing of your famous #4 Jay - no better than anyone else out there either - so why all the hipe for him I have no idea. Yes tj was allowed to stand right there and score and should never have happened but it did. Did we deserve to win yes in the first period, tigers won the second and the third was a tie. Jackson showed a bit of his true character last night as well.
If that was your 4 game in five days then you can always use the excuse of being tired - but i think it comes from management and always has.
So I did watch the same game and agree not disagree with you your defense was horrible as was ours and that includes all the d-men not just some.

Since it was brought up...

by Deke

my take on Bouwmeester. Great skater, nice touch on his passes, and I like to see players who play only as physical as required. For the most part I frown on the cheap goonery many seem to demand, sorry.
My impression from LAST nights game is that he only seems to put in as much effort as he deems necessary. At times he appears to be somewhat nonchalant about things. Now I'm quite aware the good ones appear get things done effortlessly, however at times he gets himself caught, sometimes from mental mistakes, and others from what appears to be this nonchalance, or a combination of both. He seems to play with very little emotion, and at times I think he'd be more effective packing a bit of a mean streak.
I base this on last night, and 4 games in 5 nights can take a bit of a toll considering the minutes he plays. Hell, I'd guess he was on for 40+ last night. I really expected him to stand out a little more, considering the accolades being heaped on him.
I thought Clark (28) looked good, Hollweg ordinary, and Nastiuk brutal. Crawling on all fours all night, admittedly with little help.

have seen this kid for a couple of years now and he is no different than anyone else in my honesst opinion. In last nights game there was this big hype about him so everyone is expecting the kid to go out and dominate but he never did that nor was he a stand out for Medicine Hat. So what was stated is correct he was not a standout by any means and if that was what everyone is taking about then there are some questions about him. No one is sayin that they are an expert or maybe I missed something. There is one thing that I do know and that is not everyone will agree with you nor the other poster - so get along and forget the crap. If he goes first over all then good for him and again not everyone will agree I for one do not.

goalies, and......

by Deke

Giants started Jaeger. He was pulled in favor of Chukalos,(after 3?)but up to that point I didn't think he'd been getting much help. Especially on the goal before he was given the hook.
Nastiuk was good at times, but boy, does he ever spend alot of time on all fours. Granted, there was some real scrambly play in front of him at times, but he's just scary. The book on him has to be shoot high. Just has to be seen to be believed. Tell me he's not their starter,....please.
Giants lucky to win. MH clearly the better team at this early point in the season, but no doubt tired. What was that? 4 games in 4 nights, or 4 in 5?

The most clear impression I came away with was, Davis has just got to be the worst ref I've seen in a long time. Out of it right from the beginning. Unbelievable!
Terrible calls both ways, missed calls, something a penalty one minute, not the next, and some of the late changes the Giants got away with....wow. The fans finally started getting on to him in the 3rd. I don't know where they were prior to that, he was brutal throughout. Unreal.

Giants went up 3 - 0 in the first 6 minutes. Then Tiger's came back to tie. Jaegar was pulled at some point when I wasn't listening. Choukulous (sp?) was terrific, especially in the last few minutes to help the Giants kill 5 on 4 and 5 on 3 penalty situations.
Nastiuk did well, but not well enough to win.

Give choko a chance to show his true colors. He may have been great for that game, but hold on. We had him in Regina and he stunk up the ice all season and then got replaced by our backup Davidson in the memorial cup. Choko can be great but he is the most inconsistent goalie I have seen and when he stinks, he stinks big. That is probably why we let him go 1 week after the cup.

Papiannou (sic) and Connors . . .

by AceJackson

I'm too lazy to look up Pap-alphabet's name, but he was something else tonight, or at least the Warriors made him look that way. He must have stopped Laich three or four times in close, twice on breakaways, plus he made some incredible looking stops on Limpright, O'Connor, Mitchell and Mirasty. The way the Warriors made the Hitmen look tonight, it was as if Hasek was in goal for a junior 'A' team. It was that bad, but they still lost 3-2.
Connors, meanwhile, let in a Hextall from the top of the face-off circle in overtime. Word has it it went off Knopp's stick or something but from the look and sound of it, it was pretty clean. Shots were pretty even, I believe, but Pap-alphabet had the tougher stops by a long shot.

Those of you close to me have heard me tell the story of "The King" , who was a player on the 2000 team, and his off ice antics, in the days that followed the teams return from Halifax, earned him this name that has stuck to this day.
I suspect that this clown has somehow heard the story , and attached himself to the name, which came from the movie " American Beauty". Watch the movie , and use your imagination.
I will not identify the real king, unless of course you are buying me copious amounts of Keiths and Donairs (Sailor's recipe), and you attend ICEFAN's annual fan conditioning camp at our secret lakeside base.

I want to know what is everyones opinion on his play as of late. 26 penalty minutes(all 2 min calls). The fact that he doesn't know how to check, he consistently uses his stick - hence the penalties. Last home game he tried to kick a player that was down with his skate. Also because he won't use his body to defend, he keeps getting beat.

liability?

by Czechfan

Although by my posting name I may look like this isn't a neutral opinion, at this point in time he's -3 on what hasn't been the greatest team thus far. Look at some of the other players in this category. The stick penalties aren't the greatest but he does make some pretty good hits. He's always the first dman back when he's on the ice and makes very nice outlet passes leaving the zone. The more he adjusts to the NA style game, the better he will become. Too bad they don't take advantage of his point shot more on the pp and other offensive skills he has. I don't get to watch them much but when I do, he definitely has a more positive impact on the game than negative.

Okay folks who saw the game, here is a recap of the fights in last nights Blazer game.

by Glen

The only reason I'm posting these is because another poster on an AJHL board questioned my much more brief recap of these fights. Anyone see the fights remotely close to this persons view who was at the game. These are copied from the WHL-underground.

<<<<Recap: After a Tiger's goal to make the score 4-2 MH, McCaffrey and Olynyk were lined up beside each other. McCaffrey jumped Olynyk on the drop of the puck. I think maybe Ryan was expecting a gear strip, but McCaffrey had other ideas. He quickly gained an advantage by the quick strike, and landed several shots to Olynyk's head. Olynyk got his bearings and threw a couple late in the fight. Hard to give a guy the decision on a jumping, but Cam won this one. He will have to anwser for this later in the game....
Submitted by Brent Stanfield>>>>>

First off all, if he was expecting a "gear strip", why did he get jumped? He obviously knew then they were going to go. The only thing Olynyk had to be pissed at was that the helmets didn't come off and actually, should be glad they didn't or he would've had racoon eyes. The only thing Olynyk did in regards to getting back in the fight was to get up and get fed more left hands. He didn't land a single punch.

<<<Recap: Let me set this one up for you. I will apologize for the long recap here, but we were watching the preamble to this one very closely. Kamloops scores to make the score 4-4. McCaffrey is on the ice after the goal. Louks throws on Boily for his 1st shift of the game(second period). Evason has last change and was watching closely. He pulls off McCaffrey and throws out the next line which has Keegan McAvoy who lines up next to Boily. Boily is asking and McAvoy is shaking his head. On the drop of the puck Boily gives him two or three cross checks to the chest, and McAvoy skates away. Boily completes his shift and comes off. The Blazers change their line too and out pops McCaffrey. Well thats good enough for Loucks and Boily, they grab the closest Tiger and away Boily goes, like a cruise missle after McCaffrey. He chased McCaffrey all over the ice. It was at least 30 seconds. Finally Cam accepts the obvious and away they go. Boily quickly lands 2 or 3 really good shots and McCaffrey is holdin' on. Boily hit him with a couple more before McCaffrey attempts a punch. They fall down and Boily could have really let him have it, but showed a touch of class. Score this beating to Boily all because a 20 year old vetern wouldn't anwser the bell.
Submitted by Brent Stanfield >>>>>>>>>>

Firstly, if those were two or three crosschecks McAvoy took, he's likely happy the taps came from Boily and not Boogaard. Boily took off like a cruise missle after McCaffrey and chased him all over the ice for thirty seconds (man, talk about taking creative license with something, this guy should right childrens books). As for Boily landing two or three quickly, both guys circled as soon as the equipment came off, no punches thrown, McCaffrey then tried to grab and missed at which time Boily jumped inside and may have landed a right, after that, McCaffrey's left arm was over Boily's left shoulder and he was trying to grab the back of Boily's jersey so he could get back in a position to throw something. Boily tried to throw some punches at the back of McCaffrey's head, however nothing of any significance landed. They continued to spin until the linesmen came in and pulled them apart. Boily was really going to let him have it when both guys were held by the linesmen??

I may be way off course, however the two fights were vastly different from my seat. I'd like to see how others saw it that were at the game

My take

by Kamfan

Not much different from yours on the 2nd one. Boily wins, mostly on size and strength, but does little damage.

On McAffrey/Olynick, again not much different, but my take nonetheless: IMO Olynyk was expecting a gear strip, but made the mistake of not making sure McAffrey was of the same mind. Rather than backing off from McAffrey and "de-gearing", he does it right next to him and either Cam was on a different page altogether or he agreed to squaring off then "dishonorably" (as honorable as fighting is) changed plans. In any event, McAffrey was throwing punches first and repeating landing them on a helmetless Olynyk. Olynyk never mounted much of a response, but luckily, IMO due either to punch location or a severe lack of power behind them, sustained little damage. From where I was sitting it looked like McAffrey's early punches were landing on the top of Olynyk's head (incidently, a recipe for a broken hand), which generally isn't going to cause much damage. Now if I saw that wrong and McAffrey was, in fact, landing punches square on Olynick then he must be one weak puncher. The way he was able to free swing on those first few, he should have been able to turn Olynyk's face into red mush if not KO him altogether.

It also looked to me that Cam skipped a big uppercut off the ice as they went down the first time. I'm really surprised he didn't hurt his hand somewhere along the line there.

No . . .

by Cougar Guy

Kamfan those shot totals were pretty accurate. A real dog of a game tonight with lots of d by Letbridge . . . lots oh holding and hooking (nothing penalty worthy but enough to slow the game down).

Only abot 4 or 5 good chances fro each team. Leth scored on theirs, we didn't.

Overall we came out slow, didn't skate and didn't really look like we wanted to be there. MUCH different effort from the weekend. I'd say this is an example of a game that we won't see too often from this years Cougars. We will lose again but the shots will be up as will the intensity. I know we'll save some for you guys

If the shot count was accurate...

by Kamfan

can we at least borrow your shot counters for a few games? A shot total like that could really boost our D's confidence.

Man, 40 shots, that REALLY must have been a dog. I would HOPE the fans wouldn't have to see that too often.

I noticed the crowd was down a little again. Still as noisy? I would think it might be, I've found fairweather fans generally don't make much noise anyway.

Yeah . . .

by Cougar Guy

it was a pretty bad game to watch.

It is still nosiy when there is something to cheer for and when they play with some intensity. Tonight was dead . . . the game sucked and the stereo was busted. Those two put together means for a graveyard type atmosphere.

The crowd numbers are down quite a bit from last year . . . probably around 750-1000 a game (although Saturday against Vancouver was a near sellout of 5955). I don't think it's so much fairweather fans as the forestry industry being in the tank. In this town as forestry goes . . .

It's really too bad because we have been playing pretty good hockey this year to start . . . much better than I think anyone wouldv'e expected given the team. I think we'll find more people picking the games they go to just simply because the wallets are much tighter in this economy. I'm pretty sure that the drop in attendance is due to season ticket non-renewals. Of those I'd bet a good chunk are corporate. I suspect we'll average somewhere around 5,100 to 5,200 for the year . . . still pretty strong considering the economy we're in.

So when are the Loops gonna lose a game? You may want to save that honour for us

Respond to this message

Goto Forum Home

We're tryin'

by Kamfan

I'm sure we wouldn't mind saving that honour for the Cougars. And I'm sure the Cougs would love nothing more than to knock off an undefeated Blazer team. But that would mean not losing in our next 10 including games against Kootenay, Spokane, and Swift Current, with 7 of them on the road (6 of them being our eastern swing).

Not exactly the scenario I'd be putting my money on, but again, it sure would be nice to put the Cougars in that position come November 2nd.

P.S. Off-chance I'll be up to PG in December. Better than even money I'll be up for the double-bill in Feb (work should be sufficiently slow then). Hope to see you there.

by Bob Loblaw

Engellend with two seeing eye goals through traffic (I think Limpy tipped No. 2, but Engellend got credit). Sjostrom on a short-handed breakaway in the first and Beechey waltzed past Anderson two men up and Segal put the rebound away late in the second to equalize.

Pappy looks pretty solid and Connors is playing quite well. Not sure if this is Calgary's A game (I hope not for your sake), but the Warriors are missing a lot of chances and making careless turnovers.

Hey Hat fans

by Puck Pride

Really like your team. Tigers definitely some fine talent, speed, skill, coaching, enthusiasm and, desire for the game. Goaltending was suspect against the Blazers last night but regardless of the outcome, the Tigers put in a great effort. Problem is, this team has lost so much over the last few years, they have to learn how to win. Regardless of whether you dislike the goaltending or team management, If I were in your shoes
I would consider it a privelage to get the chance to see the likes of Bouwmeester, Thompson, Holloweg etc 36 times a year. Meyer is going to be a great talent in the future as well. My biggest hope is that Bob Loucks
isn't the fall guy for Rick Carriere's shortcomings. Loucks is a gem and, a THE guy the organization should build around. He has forgotten more than Carriere knows about the game and, if I were Maser I wouldn't allow Carriere to make a deal, without the OK of the coach. I've heard that in at least one instance since Loucks joined the team, he had to find out second hand
about one of his players being traded and, IMO that's a travesty.

The most pleasant surprise thus far into the season is the play of Barry Brust. He looks very solid right now. He is controlling rebounds, cutting down angles and taking care of his crease. Look out for the Chiefs this year, because it looks like Barry is the real deal. - OUT!

The Brust story

by Puck Pride

is very similiar to Kenric Exner's stint with the Kamloops Blazers in 98--99. Brust is taking advantage of playing behind perhaps the best defence in the league. As long as he makes the first save, his teamates are there to clear pucks and, bodies away from the net. Spokane's defence has all the capability in the world to make a good goalie look great, and, lets face it, you don't geta sniff in the WHL unless you are a pretty good goalie. All the best to him

What does everyone think about the trade thing? Will Connors be able to do it? If not who's going? I heard Calgary just traded for a 4th goalie. They looked like they could really use a strong defensive forward. Landolt looked good coming off the injury list. I think he's being groomed. They shouldn't trade him. Might be a good deal for Brodziak all the way around. He looked good defensively and I don't think he will be happy as a 4th liner. Maybe throw in Mitchell. Thoughts?

by

"Anonymous" is the default name inserted by Network 54 when a person does not put anything in the "name" field on the input screen. Such "Anonymous" posts come from many, many sources, not just one individual.

"Anonymous" posts are allowed on this board for several reasons:

1) There could be times when a "regular" poster might want to remain anonymous and not use his or her regular nick.

2) Even if a nick was required, anyone could simply make up a new one if they wanted to remain anonymous.

3) Readers can make their own judgment as to the credibility of "Anonymous" posters and can choose not to read them.

I would say the problem in Brandon could be that Kelly McCrimmon will only hire people that HE can get along with. To hell with the players. As long as Kelly and the coach are good buddies and share the same warped philosophy then that is all that matters. I am not surprised Dean is less than popular with players. I don;t feel his personal demeanor will be all that different than that of Lowes. The onice schemes may be different but thats it.

You just watch and see if they don't put Jaeger in net. That will put a lot of pressure on Kettles. Does anybody out there want to make a prediction on this game.

But goalies have to do their job also. Their are alot of goalies averaging 30-35 shots a game with decent stats. But Kettles only stopping 84% and the other goalie ( sorry I forgot how to spell his name) 0nly saving 79% are not doing their part. It sounds like the defense could be stronger but so could the goaltending. I do believe Kettles is a 20 year old, correct if I'm wrong, if he is he should be stronger in net than that.

He made it, for Peat's sake

By JENN MENENDEZ, Portland Press Herald Writer

BOSTON — Stephen Peat will play in better games and in front of bigger crowds.

He'll eventually get more than 3 minutes, 54 seconds of ice time. And one day he might even become a central figure for the Washington Capitals, gaining renown with every landed punch and bloodied finger.

But for now, Monday afternoon will not be soon forgotten by Peat, the young enforcer who was one of junior hockey's most feared players two years ago.

Peat, who missed most of his rookie professional season with the Portland Pirates because of a groin injury, made his NHL debut at the FleetCenter against the Boston Bruins. Boston shut out Washington, 4-0. But Peat was smiling.

"I don't know, it's like your dream come true, playing in the NHL," Peat said in his soft-spoken voice that always seems so opposite from the way he plays. "I was pretty nervous, my first game. And it would've been a lot nicer if we'd won. But I feel like I got my foot in the door a little bit."

Following the game he planned to call his parents in British Columbia with the news.

Peat skated on a line with Chris Simon and fellow rookie Brian Sutherby. He didn't look out of place, keeping up with the pace and skill.

He fought with Andrei Nazarov, landing a flurry of punches to the head before slamming him to the ice. He also fought P.J. Stock in the waning seconds of the game, when several Capitals started getting rough.

This season will be a busy one for Peat. He has earned a spot with the Capitals but will be sent to the Pirates frequently in order to maximize his ice time.

"We told him it's going to be a long year, playing on both teams," said Caps General Manager George McPhee. "He brings a physical element to the team that we need. But we also want to develop him as a player. If there are stretches where he's not going to be in the lineup here, we'd like him to be in Portland."

Peat was picked up by the Capitals in the summer of 2000 when the Anaheim Mighty Ducks couldn't sign him. He came straight to Portland, where the organization hoped to convert him from defense to forward.

Though he played in only six games, Peat demonstrated he can skate, handle the puck and certainly rough things up out there.

At training camp last month, Peat quickly showed the organization he was not far from the NHL.

"He has NHL legs and NHL toughness," said McPhee. "He can get up and down the ice real well, and certainly he's tough. But he missed a lot of time, unfortunately. He played well enough at camp to deserve to stay here."

In his few appearances in Portland last season, Peat also showed he knows how to play to the crowd. After one fight, he waved his hands in the air as he headed to the penalty box, signaling to fans to pump up the volume.

"I get excited over what I do," Peat said last season. "A big part of my game is that I have to be pumped. I can't just go through the motions out there or I'm the guy laying on my back. There's a little showboat here and there."

While in Portland, however, Peat will be working on more than his fighting techniques.

"That's not the part of his game we need to worry about. He knows how to react," said McPhee. "He needs to be able to stay in his position, make the decisions, take the puck out of the zone at the right time, keep the puck in the zone at the right time."

Peat will skate with the Capitals today in New York, preparing for a game against the Rangers on Wednesday night. At some point, though, he'll head back to Portland and become a Pirate again.

"I'm willing to do whatever I can do to get ice time and get games in," said Peat. "Last year I didn't really play that much, so it's probably best for me to get as much ice time as I possibly can, here or in Portland."

The wait, he says, was worth it.

"Definitely," said Peat. "It's great to be playing now."

don't blame the goalie...it only shows you don't know the game

by charlie

blaming the tenders is usually a lame excuse for poor performance and i'm sure it is in this case.

the problem is with the make up of the team. beyond the top two d-men the rest are average at best...it was part of the problem last year as well.

the major trouble on the tigers is the forwards...all the little guys that look great darting in and out when they have the puck are fun to watch and there are several on the team that will get close to 100 points, however those same little guys are not very good when the other team has the puck, they lack the physical presence often required to play a tight checking game...many of those high scoring forwards will be minus players and there is not much point in that is there?

the real problem is rick carriere...did he think he was going to revolutionize the game when he squandered all those high draft picks on small forwards?...every team has one or two small, skilled forwards but no one and i mean no one else has three lines of them.

kettles is just fine...he was last year and he will be again...when the other team scores look quickly and see where the tigers are in relation to the other team...just like last year there will be one or two guys wide open.

I can see that:

by ABU Tiger Fan

you havn't spent the last 2 season watching him play or you wouldn't say that. You can't expect the whole team to lay in front of the net, and stop the shots for him. He has a job to do and he does it poorly. And I don't understand your logic, about the small forwards. Are you telling me that, if the Tiger forwards where bigger that would make Kettles a better goalie. See, the players have a job to do up front, and they do, they are getting the goals. But Kettles has a job to do also, and that is to stop the shots, and I don't expect him to stop then all, but he has to learn to stop the bigs ones that save the game, and that is what he didn't do last night " AGAIN ".

yup, the players have a job to do up front...BUT they also have a job to do in their own end and that is exactly where the small forwards fall down...not to mention the defense. try the exercise i mentioned in my previous post, when the tigers get home watch and see who is where when the opposition scores...usually when a goal is scored there have been one or two major mistakes made before the puck gets to the net. this is true of many goals scored but your team is guilty of it a lot. to your other point...yes big forwards who are defensivley responsible are very important to winning. look at the rosters of the past few league champions and you will see that every team had plenty of those types of players...and then look and see how many you have.

before the season started the talk was the hat had four goalies (at least) who could play...now seven games in you want the guy who was let go...get serious. kettles is not your biggest (by far) problem on your team.

Have to agree

by Concerned

Sometimes the goalies to blame but when the goals scored are a result of poor backchecking or inadequate defense then its not just the goalies fault. As far as I know there's no I in team so lets not just blame one individual. If Nastiuk has a bad game, which he supposedly did in P.G., he wasn't getting blamed because he's a rookie. If he's on the team he's just as responsible as Kettles. So everyone has to remember that this is a team effort (or lack of).

Charlie, are you paying attention at all?

by CatFan

To blame the forwards for this road trip is absolutely ridiculous. In 2 of the 3 games we have outshot and it sounds like outplayed the opposition. Who is getting all of the offence? Lupul, St. Jacques, Hollweg and Thomson. These guys are playing their hearts out, and right not are probably as frustrated as the rest of us with the goaltending effort. Kettles was brought it against Prince George after the Tigers had fought back from a 4-0 deficit and instead of holding his team in, he gave up 6 goals in a period and a half. The next night he only faced 27 shots but gave up 5 goals. Against Kamloops, we had 45 shots on goal and scored 5 goals against a team that had only allowed 9 goals in its previous 4 games. We needed Kettles to make the big saves and he just hasn't done that.

Sounds like M H needs

by Defense wins games not offense

a coach who is able to teach the defensive game as well as the offensive game! But then Loucks never has been known for his coaching brilliance! A goalie is just one man and if his forwards aren't backchecking and playing proper defense and his D-Men are weak(which it sounds as though they are after reading Glens post) then it doesn't really matter who is in net they are going to have a long night with little or no help from the rest of the boys on the defensive end of the arena! Not even Dan Blackburn could have a good GAA with the support it sounds as though Kettles isn't getting! Offense will only win you so many games, Defense will win you a helluva lot more games!

Goalie's role

by Ab

Any goalie will tell you there's difference between one they could have stopped and one they never had a chance on. Goalies don't get to the Dub unless they've shown they can stop the puck with consistency. The shot count is often a red herring, because it's where the shots come from that counts. You can take 50 shots a game but if they're all from inside the blue line and the goalie has a clear view of the puck, don't be thinking you should have won the game! The other factor is confidence, and if a goalie is consistently getting no help, he'll lose it.

Not really sure Kettles was the entire problem,...........

by Glen

first Blazer goal is scored on a deflection off your own defenseman's stick.

Second one, McAvoy goes by a Med Hat defender who looked more like a pylon as he couldn't keep McAvoy outside and McAvoy tries to fire a backhander but it roles off his stick and the change of pace fools Kettles. Tough one for any goalie.

Third goal the defence and forwards couldn't gt it by Krovkin three seperate times at the left point, finally comes to Aulin who finds a wide open open Upshall who is left alone right on top of your goalie long enough to cram it in and he wasn't touched.

Fourth goal comes on a feed from Aulin to Sloan who fires a shot that beat Kettles with half the Hat club standing in front of him.

Upshall gets his second as the Med Hat defence tries to look like pieces in a wax museum and the McAvoy, Aulin and Upshall complete a nice passing play.

Final goal comes as Annesley is left wide open in the slot and could have had a pint and smoke, before he had to shoot, this with :15.4 left on the clock, where was the defence.

Don't try and blame Kettles for this one folks.

I found it refreshing to listen to him talk to his friend as he mentioned good plays by both teams and wasn't consumed by only his son's play. When his son scored his third of the period he didn't even look excited, but I think he had a bet with his son and it might have cost him a few bucks.

The dad was complimentary to players on both teams and seemed to enjoy the game. Though I don't know him, a lot of minor hockey parents I know and even other parents with kids in the dub could learn something from this guy.

I'd take him MJ, thank you very much. They have a 20 spot open and Kettles would be the solid veteran 'tender that they need. This guy was an all-star the year before last and the Medicine Hat fans couldn't get enough of him for the last 2 seasons. Now he sucks and lets in soft goals all of the sudden? I hope the Warriors have the sense to take him off your hands.

Who's the loser???

by LHF

You Hat fans should take a step back and listen to yourselves. I can't believe the things I'm reading on here and on the Medicine Hat forum. Especially from you newhatter. Boo Kettles every time he steps on the ice??? Give your head a shake. You obviously don't know any of these guys personally, or you wouldn't be talking about any of them this way. Did you stop and think that maybe a parent, aunt, uncle, sister, brother or even a billet might be sitting beside you when you boo these players? I guess with your attitude you could care less. Right!!! As far as the problems with your team, go back and read Charlie's post again, it made sense.

Portland fans, I have a question?

by SeattleFan

During your rebuilding year (or years) did you have many fans that were jumping ship because you were losing? Boy, some fans are just being brutal on the Seattle forum and not willing to take a losing season in the hopes that the future will offer a chance at a winning season. Just wondered if you guys experienced the same kind of thing. Thanks!

Yes....But Most Portland Fans Understand.....

by Scooter

That you inevitably have cycles of winning and losing in junior hockey. There really is no way around it. Does that mean you shouldn't have some fun second guessing management? Absolutely not...I would hope people would stop short of not buying tickets to watch their own team's younger players develop and watch the rebuilding process. I would think it would be fun to be around through the tough times players go through - like Portland in 1999-2000...so they can enjoy the good times when they come again - like Portland in 2000-01. I think Seattle has been victimized by several moves that appeared to be good ones the day they were made...but for some reason just did not turn out. And, they just did not have good chemistry with their last group of talented players. I can remember our coach Brent Peterson being extremely impressed with Seattle's young core four or five years ago...they just did not live up to expectations for whatever reason. I don't think that is necessarily anyone's fault. Again, they seem to have a good group of 16 and 17 year olds now...and Seattle fans should enjoy watching them develop.

and I only missed one game radio or Home. I think Portland fans were more excited about seeing good teams come into town then they were to see the Hawks that year. If memory serves me right though the Hawks drew nearly 12k fans the last night they played that year.

tough times

by blue line

It is hard for "casual" fans to understand that junior hockey is fun and exciting even if the team as a whole is not going to have a brilliant won-loss record. The Birds have some good young players (like my favorite, Tyler Metcalfe) and it's great to watch them as they mature. You've got Spiller, number 31 overall in last year's draft, one of the best d-men in the league. Think of all the future NHL stars who will visit Seattle this year when their team comes to play. There's still plenty of reasons to go to the games, but unless you learn the game and appreciate the talents of individual players--when winning the game doesn't matter most--it's a tough road to fill the arena night in and night out. The Birds may want to spend a little more time and money on fan education and team promotions--geting the players out into the community--and let people find out what great kids there are playing the game at this level.

Some, but I don't think as much.

by KG

Every team has it's share of fair-weather fans and bandwagoneers. The Hawks certainly do. Some of them (such as our hometown newspaper, the Oregonian) still haven't returned despite our worst-to-first season and Western Division Championship (of course, I can only speculate darkly about the O's motivation). Even now attendance hasn't quite recovered to what it was the year after our Cup win.

However, in Seattle's case I fear there is a sense of alienation that goes far deeper. Birds' fans have seen an incredible amount of talent come and go thru Key Arena over the years and have had pitiful little to show for it.

And then there was Last Year. The Birds began it anticipating the glorious culmination of four seasons spent steadily accumulating an extraordinary base of talent, rated the finest in the entire 58-team CHL and the best 20-and-under hockey team in the world.

But somehow, something went terribly, inexplicably wrong. This team of nascent superstars ended the regular season next to last in their division, and finished by getting swept in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Now their fans are told they are facing a huge rebuilding year, and it certainly looks like they are. The thought of having to TOTALLY rebuild the year AFTER finishing 6th in a 7-team division is just astonishing, and if it were my team...

God, I'm sorry...I don't think I can even go there...

I'm not saying all this to rub it in, my friend; but if I were a Birds fan, I'd be of a mind to dangle the dinglebobs of the S.O.B.s responsible for this debacle from the top of the Space Needle whilst leaving their remainders on the ground 40 stories below. I won't mention any names, but their initials are Don Nachbaur, Dean Chynoweth, Russ Farwell, and Bob Yuill.

I haven't been to your forum -- don't need to -- I can see what's happening from ours. The fans who are going bonkers right now are not just a bunch of your typical scurvy sports rats scurrying in panic from a burning deck -- they be long-time fans who've been struggling valiantly at the pumps, bailing water from the smoking bilges for the past 10+ years, who now realize the whole damned ship is goin' down, listin' heavy to larboard, with the whole bleedin' lot of 'em trapped in its belly.

Aye, it's their screams you be hearin'.

I'd dare say there isn't a hockey fan in Seattle metro area right now who isn't waiting anxiously for September 2003, when the planned Everett franchise hosts it's first exhibition game in a new arena built especially for hockey. When that day comes, their years with the T-Birds will seem just a long, horrid, faraway dream.

I hope the fans hang in there with your team. I was impressed with the T-Birds in the Bronco game. They are young but have lots of speed and talent along with decent size. It is perhaps unfortunate they took that long road trip before they got more practices and experience under their collective belts. I will be very surprised if they don't show steady progress and become a force before the end of the year. We always look forward to Seattle's visit, although there didn't seem to be the usual entourage of fans this trip.

Recap (sort of)

by CYKA

Blazers managed to pull off the win despite being outplayed for much of the game. Seder opened the scoring with less than 3 gone on the first but Lupul came right back to score the first of his 3 consecutive power play goals to end the first period 3/2 The Hat. Medicine hat were forechecking the Blazers very hard and defiantly had the edge in play. Second period ended up 4-2 with The Hat holding a wide edge in play due partly to a very good power play that the Zebra's must have enjoyed, seeing as how they kept managing to come up with some ridiculous calls. The Blazers come back in the first 6 minutes of the 3rd with 3 straight goals only to have Medicine Hat tie it up again on the pp.....4 for 7 on the pp for them tonight. Blazer soph Lukin then took a bad penalty with 2.28 remaining and only some heroics by Belanger kept the score tied. He absolutely robbed Draney on a close in shot. Just as the penalty ended. Korovkin fired the puck down the ice and Lukin came out of the box to get the puck along the wall, passed to Krestonavich who proceeded to set up Ainsley for the winning goal with 15 seconds left in the game. Shots 38'45 in MH favor. A very exciting game to watch as both teams exhibited some very fast skating and excellent forechecking by MH. They will be a force to be reckoned with down the road

NO, but your team defence was terrible. Read my above post in regards to the goals scored.

by Glen

and you'll see.

You guys are brutal trying to hang Kettles out to dry on this game. Christ the Blazers were so wide oopen on four of the goals and the other two, one a deflection by your own defenceman and the other with three of his teammates all blocking his view of the shot.

Look in the right place to lay the blame and it certainly wasn't Kettles who needs to shoulder the load after the third period debacle by your defence and forwards who were finally caught cheating in the third, trying to leave the zone early. Get some team defence and you might see that Kettles ain't half bad.

With Med Hat fans logic, I guess Kettles lost you the opening night game to Calgary because he couldn't score as well in the 4-0 loss.

Actually I think it is a combination of both goaltending and defence

by CatFan

We know we need better defence, but the goaltender is the one with the most experience on our time, and he has to make some big saves to give the team confidence. I am beginning to wonder if a coaching change may be in order, possibly an ex-player who can relate to these players and get them to play for them. I think Louck's style is outdated, but we have been through so many coaching changes already!!

Good start but with all due respect Loops have beaten

by Rebel66

an expansion team twice, Seattle who are really struggling, and Medicine Hat who have also had a tough road trip. The victory against the Ice could be said to be the only win against a legitimate contender. Even then they are without a key component of their team. Still you can only beat them as they come and Kamloops have started very very well. #1 in the CHL? If they base the ranking on a % basis then yes. Personally I think it's still too early to rank with any certainty. After all it's totally subjective at the best of times. Swift have had the tougher schedule thus far and have an excellent 7-1 record. Who was their loss to again?

GREAT that we turned that "turkey" around last night!

by Bfa

After 2 periods it appeared as if it was going to be another Thanksgiving day loss, but ya gotta give the guys a lot of credit. They came out PUMPED in the 3rd and did their job. A few late penalties made the game scary/exciting, but the outcome was FANTASTIC! Belanger had his 2nd in a row solid game, but if we're really only gonna keep him or Parley...we'll just have to wait and see how mgt handles this. We have space for a 20, and our D could use some shoring up. So, until Wednesday...GO BLAZERS GO!!!

P-Cup II - Week 2 Standings

by GPG

Well i wish i would've kept a winning pct. as again the Proggies hammered out many winners, largely making a mockery of the Game of the Week as almost all at least picked the winner. However, no one picked the score for the 2nd week in a row, so i have decided to raise the pot untill someone nails it. Correct score nabs you 5 pts. next week. Honorable mention goes to our 2 rookies; Grizz, who lead the field w/ 15 pts. and Mannfan, who scored a hefty 13. Of course they are Chiefs fans so we can expect them to do well. THe competition is fierce early in the season. only 10 pts. seperates 1st from last place. Standings are*...

Prev. pts. - THis week - Total pts.
IHM - 12 - 11 - 23
3BlindMice - 9 - 14 - 23
BadaBing - 12 - 9 - 21
ICE3 - 9 - 12 - 21
Leo T.B. - 8 - 13 - 21
Krazy G - 8 - 11 - 20
Big Buck - 9 - 9 - 18
Ferrari - 8 - 10 - 18
RD REB - 9 - 9 - 18
GCG - 4 - 13 - 17
MC - 3 - 12 - 15
Grizz - 0 - 15 - 15
JustIce - 9 - 6 - 15
MannFan - 0 - 13 - 13

* - Being that I ain't no mathmetician, and also admitting that i kinda jumbled all the scores around while sorting in Excell, there is a remote possibility i screwed you w/ your score. If you think so, you may issue a challenge.(i still have your emails.) if you win you get your score back + 10 bonus pts. If you lose, you keep your lousy score and lose 15 pts. and please only test if you think you really did get screwed...i ain't that smart and all this ''cipherin' '' as ferrari likes to say gives me a headache...(or is it the Cheap American beer?...) any way schedule comin' up...good luck.
