Lake surfing for the first time

I have done some surfing about 5 years ago and loved it. I have heard of lake surfing and want to give it a shot - I was thinking of heading to Long Point. On the map, it looks like it would have some good waves (weather permitting).

Any experience from Long Point?

I'm living in Toronto - Does anyone know of any good spots in the area or a few hours drive?

Any info - is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Todd

long point ok but limited fetch

August 30 2005, 8:51 AM

Long point is ok, but short fetch and E side is just swamp. Cant get to the point either, without a 4x4 or dirt bike and getting arrested by coast guard...
Same story, buy a weather radio, marine map of Erie and ON, and a ruler. Look at wind directon (15+knots)and figure where the swell is likely to hit best; look on marine map for deep water quickly becoming shallow. On any wind direction over 15 knots there is surf on either Erie, Huron, or ONT within a couple hour drive of T.O. THere are lots of great spots in toronto itself too. Hit up the toronto surf shops and try to get hooked up with some locals who might give you advice too. Always bring a long board in case the waves suck-good to have as a backup to shortboard if thats your thing.
Good luck

fetch?

August 30 2005, 4:35 PM

This is a pretty stupid question but I've asked a bunch of people and no one has really explained it. What is fetch exactly??? It's in that Surfing the GL book, but I couldn't find a real explaination. Thanks...

fetch and erie camping

August 31 2005, 7:55 AM

Viv-fetch is the open water distance between land masses on any given wind direction. The more fetch the further apart the waves get and generally the more power as well. Fetch isnt the only thing to consider though-shoreline, depth, and bottom type (rock, sand, rock reef, piers, jetties, etc) all influence wave shape and size. Sometimes a shorter fetch can be made up for with higher wind speed over deeper water and a fast bottom of rock, like Rock Point on a Strong SE. Speaking of Rock Point, Rock Point provincial park is nice and clean, clean deep water, goes off on S or SE, goes OK on SW, and is close to tons of other Niagara breaks on both lakes. That'd be my pick for a camp and surf mission. Just be cool about getting rowdy and blotto...our surf safaris have been kicked outta there by the park rangers before we even got thru the gate, right Tim and Hodad? Long beach is another good campground, close to Rock, D-Land, the Hill, Wyldewood, Area 51, and even lake ontario breaks-not as nice a campground as Rock but more tolerant of stupidity at 2AM. You've gotta really go nuts to get kicked out of there-still, weve done it, right Turtle, Mikey G, Lifegaurd, Hodad, Furminger? Man, we even wrote a song about that place
"party in the sand and muck and drink until we're all F'd up" or something like that.
Destructo
