The ESA Great Lakes District (East Lakes) will hold the Howling Into The Wind Surf Contest on either Saturday 22 or Sunday 23 October, 2005. The contest will be held in Toronto if there are waves. If the waves are better in Hamilton or in Port Colborne on either of those dates then we will shift to the better wave location.
We need two spotters tomorrow in the early a.m. to check Ashbridges and Bluffers for wave conditions. The afternoon is the best time for the contest for me on Saturday.
There will be a howling contest. The loudest howler will win two cans of black beans and some rice and a lottery ticket. This is how the howling part of the contest will work. Each surfer will take a turn paddling out into the lake and then howl as loud as they can. The loudest howling surfer that can be heard on the beach wins the prize.
All divisions in longboard, shortboard, and bodyboard will be held for competitors that show up at the contest.
All competitors must be current members of the ESA and can join at the contest or online at surfesa.org
Tonight after 11:30 I will decide after reviewing all weather information and surfer tips if we will have a surf contest on Saturday in Toronto.
After midnight tonight please recheck this post or call the Surf Contest Hot Line: (716) 884-7781 to find out where the surf contest will be. In the early morning on Saturday I will consult with surfers who check out A-Bay and Bluffers and then decide what time we will meet to compete and howl into the wind.
If we don't hold the contest on Saturday then we will try again to hold the contest on Sunday.
If anyone in Toronto wants to contact the media and tell them about the ESA Great Lakes District Howling Into The Wind Surf Contest that is cool by me.
We will raffle off two rash guards and some other prizes that have been generously donated to this event.
Jon Gardener please post the name of the business that is sponsoring our surf contest here so that everyone knows where to go in Toronto to shop. They donated prizes therefore they are now official sponsors. Post the business name here.
We also have the end of the year raffle still going on. Each competitor at this contest gets one raffle ticket for the end of the year raffle.
This months edition of ESM and Surfing Magazine is in. All competitors at the beach will get copies and back copies that they missed of Surfing Magazine.

We're moving the contest back to 3 p.m. sharp today.
October 22 2005, 9:17 AM
The comtest will start at 3 p.m. at Bluffers Beach in Toronto, Ontario/Lake, Ontario.
Look at these wave predictions for today. The afternoon starts getting into 2 metres and over 6 feet late in the day. So that's when the surf shoud be best:
The ESA Great Lakes District's "Howling Into The Wind Surf Contest in a green to go event. What do you say about that?
I have a pair of used size 11 booties to give away to competitors with that size foot. The boots were used once but didn't fit and are like new and 6 mil.
I'm not sure if Bluffers is the right call especially if this north influence continues or gets stronger. The Toronto crew is heading to the Bridge or Rock Creek for that reason. Al will be calling me from the Bridge shortly and I will update.
I'm meeting a couple of guys at Rock Creek with Vlad and then we're heading over to the Bridge for the afternoon. Marston and Rob are heading over as well.
Hope to see you there.

The ESA-Great Lakes District-East Lakes "Howling Into The Wind Surf Contest" Results:
October 22 2005, 11:28 PM
The ESA Great Lakes District-East Lakes "Howling Into The Wind Surf Contest" was held after 4 p.m. on Saturday 22 October 2005 at The Bridge surf break in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in Lake Ontario.
The conditions were chest to neck high and mushy and nearly blown out. The wind was very cold and the water temperature very comfotable with a light spring/fall suit, and hoodie. Gloves and booties were unnecessary.
CH Television showed up and went to Rock Creek to see surfing there and promised to come back when we got the contest going. We think the tv crew might have gotten lost.
The kayaks showed up again and there were many non competitive surfers some who were from Montreal.
The Results:
Please corrrect this posting if you see any inaccuracy in the devisions or any other sort of thing. This is where I verify that for the record everything is correct.

If by some crazy fluke of luck there is some inaccuracy in the above results please correct me here and now. I wear too many hats.
Thanks everyone that showed up and I hope you had a fun time.
Hey Magilla, I just wanted to make a correction to the results. Im 28 so I belong in the Master's category instead of the men's. The wind and rain made for some confussion today, but I still had a great time. Even though the conditions werent great, the stoke and attitudes of every one, as always, were fantastic. Thanks to everyone for a great afternoon.

Is there any other corrections that need to be made here? It is important that we get the age divisions and competition points correct for those who intend to compete this Spring 2006 on the East Coast in the ESA Northeast Regional.
I apologize to competitors for the above mistake. My only excuse is that it is nearly impossible for me not to make a mistake under the conditions that I work under.
Yesterday I became so wet and cold standing in that gale. At one point despite having the clip board and judging wrapped in plastic sheeting, they became wet and my pen couldn't write. So thanks to the other surfers standing next to me, that memorized the scores of the competitiors in that heat of the division. It became more interesting from that point onward.
In retrospect we should have run this contest in Toronto in the first place. However we did successfully complete another small district surf contest. If I had had that winning 649 ticket last night things would change at our surf contests dramatically. There would be judging stands, public address systems, a meal afterward, bigger raffles, bigger trophies, and I would own several of the best areas for surfing in this area. I would build a surf park on a marina.
How did the Howling Into The Wind 649 ticket do last night? I hope that you enjoyed the black beans and rice and hit the big pay off. How was the ancient bread?

The ESA 2005 Competition's don't end till Dec. 31 2005.
October 23 2005, 11:43 AM
We have over two months to have more Eastern Surfing Association Great Lakes District East Lakes surf competitions.
More surf competitions are in the works so that my district competitors have a better chance of accumulating the necessary competition points to get seeded into the ESA Northeast Regional Spring 2006 Surf Contest and to further develope their competition skills.
Everyone get you warm six mil gear ready.
What competitors who competed in yesterdays surf contest wear size 11? We will raffle off a size 11 pair of seven mil Body Glove booties. Chris Furminger won them in a surf contest and tried to wear them once but he is a size 12. Furminger gave them back to me to raffle off again. So who fits size 11 and was a competitor yesterday at our surf contest? This is where you register to win those booties now.
What do you guys think about winning six and seven mil booties and gloves instead of trophies for first place next year?

Hey Magilla, Im a size 11 and would love to be thrown in the raffle for the booties. I competed in the mens shortboard division. Thanks again for everything yesterday, despite the cold and not so great conditions I had a great time.

Hey Magilla,
I had an awesome time yesterday. Despite all the good luck I had in the water yesterday, it didn't continue with the 649 ticket. Can't wait for the next contest.
When I went by the bridge it looked blown out and I didn't see anyone there. I didn't get any word a contest was still being held. I was in Oakville during the afternoon so I couldn't check on line. Oh well, next time...I hope!

The size 11 boots were supposed to be raffled off last week at the Howling contest.
October 29 2005, 12:26 PM
We have one pair of seven mm size 11 booties that I forgot to raffle off last week at the contest.
The boots were won last year by Chris Furminger but didn't fit him. He is a size 12. He wore them once and gave them back to me to raffle off at the contest.
So Sabastian if you were size 11 than you have till tonight to get into this raffle. Please enter only if the boots will fit you. This raffle is only open to competitors who competed last week and wear size 11.
Enter right here by writing: Magilla I want to be in the bootie raffle.
