Spoke to Magilla and he asked me to post this contest change.

!!! Mohawk Point !!!!

Contest still at noon tomorrow, during a true November Gale. Mohawk is the point at the west end of Low Banks.

I will be there about 10:30 am in a Honda Element. I have a friend who lives on the point road and he has okayed our being there.

Mohawk is a point break that should have head high to over head waves tomorrow. We will be somewhat out of the wind with fairly clean conditions.

Hope to see you all there for an epic day and contest....aloha.

Hey Ron

November 5 2005, 7:56 PM

Do you think the waves will be built by then? The wave model forcast isn't showing anything until later in the day. There are conflicting reports on when the swell will start to really develop. Just curious what you guys think.

Mohawk Point is about 20 minutes, 10 kilometers, 6 miles WEST of Port Colborne.

About 1 1/2 hours from QEW/427.

Sabastian rough estimate of travel time from TO:

November 6 2005, 9:51 AM

2and 45 minutes to 3 and one half hours.

The car is loaded with comp gear. The skies are darkening and look potent and wicked to the southwest. The thunder is beginning to rumble in Saint Catharines. The flags on the Peace Bridege are rigid and whipping in the wind.

Surfs Up! Surf Contest Is Green To Go Big Today at Noon.

This is the storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald. God bless that long lost but never forgotten crew. Cheers to Gordon Lightfoot for showing the world how big Great Lakes surf can get.

Blown Out by 90 kilometer winds/60 m.p.h. Gale Forced Out!

November 6 2005, 6:43 PM

Thanks Sabastian from preventing me from taking off like a 747 jet on Mohawk Point. My 11 footer Hawaiian Classic became like a wrestling match with a wild crocodile in those winds. It was like a wind tunnel on the point. Struggling to place my board down and put my leash on was an unforgettable memory of the day. I thought the board was going to get samshed into the rocks. It fought like a banchee. Then there was the wicked shore break and my leash wrapping around both legs as I got smashed by the point waves. Then there was the west to east current moving as fast as the upper Niagara River off Buffalo. Then there was the surface wind that tried to force the nose of my board upward. It was hairy and crazy and totally impossible to hold this surf contest in the victory at sea conditions that occured this afternoon at Mohawk Point.

We nearly lost our hair that is how strong the wind was. There were small water spouts also going off on the U.S. side of Lake Erie.

I haven't drifted this far since I got blown down the Jersey Coast in LongBeach Island three years ago at an ESA Northeast Regional competition. At the end of my inside and down the point ride a lady came up to me in a car checking if I was all right. She said that she was watching me ride and thought I might have gotten into trouble on the shore rocks. I told her that I'm a firefighter and I do the rescuing instead of being the victim.

Sorry brother who drove so far today and got this wild and nasty surf.

Words of the day. "If only the wind would die the waves would be beautiful." -Dan Paris

Amen.

welcome to Dland

November 6 2005, 8:10 PM

Thanks Magilla and Ron for hosting the contest and thank you to everyone there for treating the land owners of mohawk with respect. I had a long conversation with several of them and they would be thrilled to have you back. I was a bit weird about 'popping Dlands cherry' at first, but now I'm more proud than anything. Too bad about such powerful wind, but when it dies off...Monday AM dawn patrol will be SO sweet. If I ever see you guys out there I will show you the lines tyson and Steve M and Fern I found to get outside and into the lineup easier. Magilla knows the secret to getting out there now too, but it was so windy it was next to impossible especially on an 11 footer. There is always strong currents there, but they can work to your advantage...just not in 90kph wind. Like I said, Dawn patrol tomorrow will be sweet. Welcome to Dland everyone who was there.
Dan
