Possible surf this weekend?

Was checking out the long range forecast for Lake Ontario... nothing really, then this.

Saturday
Northwest winds 10 knots or less becoming north and increasing to 5 to 15 knots in the morning...then becoming northeast and increasing to gales to 35 knots in the afternoon becoming north in the evening. Chance of rain and snow showers. Waves 1 to 3 feet building to 10 to 13 feet.

Sounds like it will happen late in the day so late Saturday/early Sunday? Bluffers?

I noticed that too. But Saturday is still a long way off. I have had my hopes crushed by the forecast too many times to start getting really excited. Thursday we should know for sure. Keep your fingers crossed.

Stormy Saturday

January 30 2006, 9:54 PM

Still a long ways away but it looks like a decent low
will develop and move off the coast. Ontario looks to be on the Northwest side of this low (based on the weather forecast I saw on TV), hence your NE winds. Hopefully the timing will be right for those predicted NE gales.

Is Ashbridges good on a NE gale? From what I read on this site the current is probably the biggest factor at that spot, which shapes up those left lines? Dying to surf this spot one day. How far is it to Ashbridges once you cross the border at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo?

Waist to chest here today and mild conditions. 4/3, 3 mill gloves, 5 mill booties, no hood, no problem. Still jonesin for another lake session though. I'm hooked on this stuff, maybe a little too obsessed. I live a mile from the beach and I find myself checking the lake conditions just as much as the ocean. I guess it's the thrill of the search and the hardcoreness of lakesurfers that has pulled me in.

Ryan if you come up here pack thick! 4/3 will not cut it up here. 3mm won't keep you in the water for 5 minutes. Go thick buddy.
A Bay is good on NE. Wind is suppose to go N so that will make for a great lake surf some where IF the forecasted swell holds.

Rob, how do 5mm boots hold up this time of year? Do your feet ever get really cold? Is it the hands that get the coldest?

Mike 5mm is warm for the first hour and a little more (for me at least) then the cold starts to set in. I can go 2+ hours in 5mm. I think everyone else is wearing 5mm but I'm a wuss when it comes to being cold. Ask Bill and Vlad they will agree to this. If you have 5mm you'll still get a great session. See you in the water. Lots of water before the session helps later on too, if you know what I mean.

Booties

January 31 2006, 9:38 AM

I wear 5mm booties and 3mm paddling socks I purchased at Mountain Equipment Co-op for $8.99 and I'm good for 3+ hours.

Anything rated less than 6/7 mil and you will suffer in the Winter.

January 31 2006, 11:28 AM

Suffering includes mild to extreme hypothermia when one doesn't wear the proper wetsuit gear at this time of the year. Hypothermia is worst for those not in tip top shape, children, and seniors.

The cold will effect your hands and feet the most because the ciculatory system of our bodies protects the torso with warmer blood where most of our vital organs are positioned. Therefore keep your distal parts of your body protected with the best and warmest gear. Also long exposure to the cold can cause other problems later in life. In out prime we think we are indestructable but one day the bill comes due with age. Surf healthy and wear extra warm wetsuit gear. You will be increasing your surfing longevity.

Stay warm and stay healthy and safe.
