A full blown seiche is running eastward on Lake Erie this morning and I'm guessing the wind is hitting 50 to 65 miles per hour. The wind blowing through the Peace Bridge railings sounds like musical pipes when there is high wind like this gusting. The surf will be blown out except in those bays that normally don't get ridable surf. On days like this a longboard is a better choice for riding those bays.
The N.O.A.A. wind casts for Erie and Ontario have green and yellow in them where we ride. Tomorrow more and more o the same with snow.
Rob yesterday I saw cars coming from the Toronto direction with snow on the roof tops. Did you have snow there yesterday? We are awaiting it here in Buffalo.
Andy you are getting the snow at KB that you needed. Snow hitting south of Buffalo for sure.
Joke: Did you hear about how the government has helped the environment in Lake Erie? Now Lake Erie fish can swim in the Cleveland river when it catches on fire and not get fried. That's because they have fire retardent in them.

I got to Bluffers around 1:30 only to find waist to head high GLASS!!! Jon followed with Vlad shortly after. Bill - i.e. Grandma Ulicki - spent an hour or so getting pretty before his session so he missed the better part of the swell. Out of generosity AND pity I let him catch a few fun looking rights. Al gets the hardest paddler award. A 10HP Johnson wouldn't match his speed the way he paddled today. Tyler made a guest appearance after being MIA for a couple of months - good to have you out there today. Full house but everyone shared the waves and got their fare share of surf. 3 hours later the cold started to set in and the swell began to die. I'm pretty sure every one had a fun well needed session. See you all on the next swell.
Here is a link to a couple of pics. from Sandbanks on Sunday. That's Salmon Point on a SW. The waves built to a few feet bigger than in the pic., and if you lined it up right they'd wall-up. It was great, and worth the drive from TO. Happy surfing.
Snowing dogs and cats out here. 12 plus inches and still piling up. Boardersmay disagree, but the closest thing to surfing on a longbboad is the gracefull arc of the Telemark turn! Aloha.

I was riding surfboards before the snowboard was invented. I can't find a way to be pulled away from these epic conditions by the snow. I know you love cutting your edge into fresh winter snow but my spirit is better unchained when I ride lake waves in the dead of winter. Everyone has there passion but I am a died in the wool Great Lakes surfer and live the life aquatic. I am a surfer needing waves like a fish with gills that needs water.
It is beyond description.
Andy good riding to all of us on slopes and watery freshies.

Good shots Andy. Me and Bill know that shoal. Looks like you caught the same conditions we had last time we visited S.P. Were the rocks icy? Have not been there for a few months. Always looked like it would be kind of sketch in the winter. Glad to see some other TO surfers scored.

Sorry, I meant Dan. Andy, my last room mate would agree with you about tele skiing. He was a freak on those things. I'll stick with the board thank you very much!

No ice on the rocks at Salmon. We found a good jump off spot and could paddle out dry between sets. Very strong current made getting in a bit sketchy so we tried to stay outside. The best part about the place is you have a reverse rip coming out of the bay so if you paddle outside it will cycle you back. It might even be better at a smaller size. The really nice waves were on the inside (more walled, more peeling) but they weren't really accessible Sunday. Never really had a full session there before, but it's a great spot on a SW. I've windsurfed West Point on a big true west wind and its probably better for surfing at that direction. More of a full wave though - better on a longboard. Those are all the secrets I know about Sandbanks. Any other breaks in the area?

With each pasing year(this will be my 4th year surfing) I find myself thinking of the waves even as the snow piles up. I am addicted to the rush and aggression of competitive skiing, but yearning for the sereniy of hours spent on the water with no-one in sight and waves rolling in one after the other. As I am in Eden NY I surf along the estern shore of erie and have only run into another surfer one time in those years. I surfed a crowded break at Goochs beach in Maine and that was a nice change, being able to watch and learn from more experienced surfers. I raly need to kick myself in a$$ and meet up with some of you on the other side of the lake. If the lake freezes up and you'all get a bug to slide on the snow drop me a line and I'll hook up at Mighty Mt. KB. Here is a link to a video of my other passion, tele-racing, I am the meathead ski racer # 4 in the slalom and blue suit in the GS. I think I could give it all up for the call of the waves one day! http://www.telemarktips.com/Moviepage.html
