i think people should do a little research before suppoting a store that roots its customers...****ty generic shaped lost shortboards for 7 bills plus tax is a joke....you can that same board mailed to your door from any number of shops on the east coast us for 550 tops...im all about supporting local buisness but not ones that no nothing about the sport and charge exhorbinant amount for boards.
We do not test our sponsors be they surf shops or restaurants on their knowledge of surfing. Board Sports is one of our district sponsors this year and we are thankful for their contribution towards running ESA competitive surf competitions.
good point tyler.... I would say that if a sponsor was really interested in contributing to great lakes surfing, they would do their best to make it availiable to as many people as possible, and that includes people who do not have $1000 on hand for a board. I understand that it is a business and ultimately they are there to make money, but there is a point (maybe around $700) where it might seem that contributions and sponsorship are just in effort to wheel in more customers, instead of help the sport. When i started surfing three years ago, i found them to be very helpful and quick to sell me everything i needed. It was only later after researching on the internet(probably should have done that first) i saw the drastic differences in prices (no, it does not cost that much to ship to Toronto). It was not a good feeling. I have never seen any of the guys out at breaks that told me they surfed too, but that does not necessarily mean anything, im just saying....I can assume this post will not be well received but i feel it is more important for people to be informed that their are lots of other options for your equipment that will beat a 10% discount. I am grateful for their support (although i do not compete) but it seems that when you overcharge that much, it just sorta cancels itself out....

It is always prudent to be an informed consumer.
I find it is somewhat confusing that people who do not compete in surf contests take issue with something that should be no concern for them. Maybe I am reading this incorrectly not being in your presence and not seeing what's in your eyes and facial expressions.
Here I have a business helping out the competions that I run and I have people coming onto this site and finding fault with them. This is not good form.
im saying that i appreciate their sponsorship because i think competitions are good for surfing, even though i do not compete. I think alot of people support competitions who do not actually participate....how many of us watched kelly win at bells online?....so i think it is valid to be concerned regardless of what you do in the water. People come to this site for information, not just because they compete, not just because of the ESA. i was directed here by others, just as i send my friends looking for information here.....that being said, it is important that people get perspectives other then that of the ESA and their non-wavering support for their sponsors....if people are being ripped off, i personally dont think it is ok, or should be condoned because they toss some money for competitions.....just trying to help out

This dialogue could be held on the beach or through email. I don't really feel it is right for our sponsors to be critisized on an ESA Great Lakes site since they are supporting us.
Board Sports also came down to Hamilton during the Reel Surf Fest to support Saving Surfing At The Bridge.
I recently told an ESA surfer that I was going to run this web site like an ESA surf competition. So I will be fair to you but I have a responsibilty to protect my competitive sponsors.
