Location: Ocean Grove, New Jersey
Time 9:30am
Waves: chest to head with some overhead sets

My friend Eric and I had it to ourselves this am in Ocean Grove. Got better since dawn, and somewhat cleaner, but that wind is fluctuating from NNE to N to occasional NNW. Some bomb waves at first that seemed to be less frequent with the tide dropping. Outer bands of rain from Beryl came through with some squally weather. Don't think the forecasters intended it to be this close to the Jersey shore. Calling for SW winds early in the am on Friday. I took these from the pier after my session. The surf seemed to drop off a bit, but there is always incoming tide later this morning, and with most of the day off today, I'll be checking it frequently.
this one was about chest high

red flags up and down the beach...no swimming, but you can surf anywhere you please today which is nice.

late am session

July 20 2006, 12:46 PM

Just out of the water. It was relatively clean and sunny for a while just before 11am, and then a squall came and kind of junked it up again. Still some overhead sets coming in......maybe too big for Rob Machado and Brad Gerlach who are in town for Reef promoting, but probably not?

PM Session 3:30 -5:30pm
Size: 6-10 with occasional solid 12ft faces on sets.
Winds: gusty out of the NE. Was calm initially then picked up towards the end of session.

"The Sea Was Angry That Day My Friends......Like an Old Man trying to send back soup in a deli"

Saw a longboarder eat it down about halfway down the face on a wave that was solid doubleoverhead. The whole ocean was moving with Beryl directly off NJ this afternoon. Some big rogue sets where I felt undergunned on a 6'11" (will throw the 8'0" in the car for the dawn patrol tomorrow).

These pictures on my little 4 meg does no justice for this swell. I wasn't able to capture the bombs because I was eager to get on it. Some of the set waves were closing out across this first photo.

Somebody barely visible bottom turning on an overhead wave...

water was tropical with the NE winds (70F or so). Most surfers had on some kind of top for the wind.
Winds forecasted to be W at 4mph Friday AM.
A Classic Day, No; but a fun large day it turned out to be, Yes. There were some windows of wind letup, but no complaints overall here. Bring on the next storm.

Clean leftovers

July 21 2006, 8:36 AM

Waves in the waist to chest high range this morning with clean conditions and minimal crowds depending on which spot you're at. Buoys dropped from 11ft to 5ft overnight, but should be an ENE swell in the water today.

PM Session

July 21 2006, 8:55 PM

Some fun waist high surf in Asbury Park, NJ this evening. Mangage to get some peaks off the end of the jetty before some bolts of lightning struck just south of us a couple of miles away. Scared all 12 or so of us out of the water. After a close call in Florida a few years, I take no chances with that force of nature.

Not too nearby, but it became more consistent and the sound delay became shorter (basically this storm blew up around us). Within 5 minutes after getting out, the heavens opened up on us.

That time in Florida I was surfing Deerfield Beach (Hillsborough Pier) in a little rain shower and not even a split second went by before I heard a crackling sound loud over my head. I paddled for dear life and ran down the beach to my car.

You lucky dog.

We continue to be in a state of local miasma. Things will inprove in late August and Sept. Late September is when you should visit. It's like the Jersey shore then. The crowds have decreased and the prices lowered.
