Don Paul the best educated weather man in Buffalo was saying last night on WIVB Television/Buffalo, N.Y. that by next week we will be seeing shore ice on Lake Erie.

Lake Erie water temperature off Buffalo, N.Y. has fallen over night one degree F from 37 to 36 degrees. In F temperature the temperature that water begins to freeze is 32.

Tonight the deep freeze is on with air temperatures dropping to 5 F. If there was surf today around here there would be a Great Lakes surfer on it. A majority of surfers in Florida, California, and Hawaii cringe just thinking about the coldness and usually say I'd give up surfing if it was that cold.

The upper peninsula of Michigan on Lake Superior is in the five foot range right now. Some of us wish we owned airplanes.

My pet peeve about U.S. and Canadian televised weather forecasts is that they are too nationalistic. The complete picture of the weather for travelers and nomadic surfers is something that should be more comprehensive and cross borders in this area of the Great Lakes. I don't have cable and have reverted to rabbit ears. I'm not deprived thanks to books, radio, and the computer.

Today we had a brief warm up but next week the predictions call for colder air temps.

January 27 2007, 8:57 PM

Today at The Palmwood it was ice free.

At Area 51 there is some small amounts of shore ice that can be easily walked around. There is one spot east of Marcy's dune where slush ice is in the water. This is how the ice off forms.

Chris Furminger was out this afternoon at Area 51.

Next week if we get colder predicted air temperatures than the ice will come and start forming in this part of Lake Erie.

The waves were larger at the better spot and diminished before sunset. The snow geese flew back out towards the lake in formation as I left the beach. It was a cloudy, gray overcast day.

Area 51 shore ice runs along the beach and has breaks all along it for access.

The shore ice is on the edge of the water and on part of the beach and not in the water or on the entire beach at Area 51.
