G we all had some fun wave riding today.
Today I surfed with Frank Kunkel and Rick Ricards at sloppy Wyldewood. I went there specifically to see Mrs. O'Hear. She is an old friend and the oldest surf fan on the north coast and my connection to good memories growing up at Wyldewood.
Today we were talking about how in h.s. I was good at swimming but sucked at doing flip turns. Mrs. O'Hear said with a smile, "that's because you learned to swim in the lake." She was refering to how we used to surf without leashes at 13 and 14 years of age and when we wiped out we had to swim for our boards that usually ended up on the shore. George you don't need a life jacket. You need to get in the lake and pool and become comfortable swimming for long times in the water. Make like the ship wrecked sailor when in waves and currents. You go with the flow and never fight the water. Always stay calm in the water and in times of high danger and stress and your chances of survival ramp way up.
I look at a surfboard as a life jacket.
Build your confidence in the water by being in it more often. We all are the captains of our own ship. A surfer shouldn't be nervous of the water but feel always at home in it. Never let a private property sign apply to the waves in the lakes. Under the International Joint Commision that guides the use of the waters between Canada and the USA nobody owns the water. Paddle freely into waiting waves that you find 365/24/7.
