WASHBURN — Members of the Bayfield County Board voted Thursday to establish a Bayfield County Aquatic Invasive Species Committee to help combat exotic plant and animal species that may threaten the county's fragile ecosystems.
The board took the action following a presentation from Tim Kane of the University of Wisconsin Extension and Land Conservationist Stefania Strzalkowska.
Strzalkowska said invasive species are one of the most serious threats posed to the environmental quality and economic value of all bodies of water in Bayfield County.
In addition to passing the resolution establishing the committee, the board passed an amendatory ordinance detailing the composition of the committee. The ordinance calls for a committee of seven, including two county board members, one Red Cliff Tribal representative and four other members, including at least one town board member, one lake organization member and one lake-related business member. In addition, the committee may have advisory representation from the county land conservation department, the county's UW Extension office, county tourism and recreation office, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Forest Service and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission.
The committee has been charged with providing input for a county aquatic invasive species strategic plan and reviewing and helping oversee the implementation of the plan.
