Public input welcome on Tonawanda Landfill
Updated: 03/31/07 6:48 AM
The Buffalo District, Corps of Engineers has completed the proposed plan for the Tonawanda Landfill detailing the recommendations for the radionuclide residues found there. I have extended the review period to 90 days, until June 26, to ensure an adequate public review. I will also hold a public meeting on April 25.
The proposed plan is just one phase in an investigatory process; it is not a final decision. We will not reach a final decision until we carefully review and evaluate all comments, and we earnestly solicit them. The best solution can only be achieved after listening to all ideas.
We have been investigating the landfill under a federal program that deals with sites used during the nation’s early atomic weapons and energy programs, and cleans them up, if necessary.
Public safety is a top priority for the corps. The issues and concerns are larger than the residue from the early atomic programs, and the corps will continue to work with federal and state agencies and elected officials to address them. I take the responsibility for this mission very seriously.
