Activists target Lake Erie coal ship
CanWest News Service
TORONTO — Greenpeace activists on Thursday boarded a ship in Lake Erie carrying 30,000 tonnes of coal to Ontario’s Nanticoke Generating Station.

The environmental organization, claims the Nanticoke facility is Canada’s largest source of climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions and Ontario’s biggest source of smog-causing pollution.

“Greenpeace’s goal today is to raise dirty energy as an election issue,” said Shawn Patrick Stensil of Greenpeace Canada in a prepared statement.

Ontarians vote in a provincial election on Oct. 10.

“We are challenging Ontario’s political leaders to commit to clean, modern energy solutions that can be deployed today to shut down Nanticoke by 2012,” Stensil said.

At about 8:20 a.m., Greenpeace activists, who departed from the ship the Arctic Sunrise aboard four inflatable boats, began painting the hull of the Algomarine.

According to the Greenpeace press release, two activists then boarded the ship and locked themselves to the loading boom.

The McGuinty government promised in the last election to phase out coal power stations by 2007.
That deadline, however, has not been extended to 2014.

Magilla Schaus: I heard a local Buffalo radio station this morning report Greenpeace boarded a ship in Hamilton on Lake Erie. This proves that this Buffalo, self billed news station doesn't know their local geography.
