Response to Any tips on an Anissa tour of L.A.?

I had a lot of input discussing this in the other forum and here is what we came up with.

I used to LOVE to stay at The Inn at Playa Del Rey at 435 Culver Boulevard I haven’t been in a few years, but they used to put warm cookies in your room when you got in and when they turned down your bed at night and the price (reasonable for L. A.,) includes breakfast and wine and cheese at night. (I don’t drink but the Babe loved it!) The only downside is the noise from the airport, but I have been told that that has been reduced over the last few years. (If you can get over the noise, Playa Del Rey is a great place!)

Nearby are the Bollona Wetlands and an area called ‘The Jungle’ that the local High School kids still hang out at! (I wish it were solely a make out area, but sadly there is still an emphasis on drugs and alcohol, so the view by the road might be best here.

Captain’s is gone now, but I’ve been told you can still get a Shack Burger at The Shack at 185 Culver Blvd. (that’s more reminiscent of Paul!)

The schools they attended are: Westchester High School 7400 W. Manchester Avenue (she was alleged to have been in the process of purchasing the apartment complex across the street in 1976,) Orville Wright Junior High now Middle School (which was originally Westchester High,) 6550 West 80th Street and Paseo Del Rey Elementary 7751 Paseo Del Rey Koven's house was right near this on Redlands (these are also best left to be viewed on a driving tour, as security at the L. A. County schools is generally high and rightly so!)

She used to work at the Winchell’s Doughnut shop at 8139 Manchester (but I don’t know if it is still there...) I think the day care Center she worked at and was to purchase is at 311 Culver Boulevard, but not sure as I had no need for a Jewish day care center while I was in L.A. (if it’s next to a liquor store and has a faux school like bell tower that would be the place!)

Anissa spent many hours at the Loyola Theater 8610 Sepulveda Boulevard, (and the Westchester Center in general) and was pretty much unchanged when I was there (but now it’s a medical office building.) Standing in front of the great building, you can almost imagine her near the front row watching Paper Moon and the Great Gatsby! (Tim Burton was no stranger there as well!) I hear the premier of the Trouble With Girls was at Grauman's on Hollywood Boulevard, but you probably have that down on your Hollywood tour anyway.

Sandpiper Street is just beachward of L.A.X. on the thin strip south of Playa Del Rey proper but there isn’t much to see there, save for deaf rabbits and a park near a butterfly preserve! (She used to hide out in the abandoned buildings there when she was a runaway.)

Dockweiler State Beach ‘is located at the western terminus of Imperial Highway in Playa del Rey’, where she and Paul spent many hours but The Lagoon Park (Del Rey Lagoon Park) has a lot of history for the Jones’ as well. If you are in that area you might as well view the Trolleys; Trolley Place and Trolleyway Street where they used to skate as well as Rees Street and Montreal Street, (she grew up at 100 Rees and her Dad and Elaine had a place on Montreal right near Rees...) I wouldn’t try bothering anybody though, unless you enjoy the L.A.P.D. (and trust me you won’t!) Bobby grew up over on Barbour right across both Vista Del Mars.

I’m not sure your would find it pleasant, but she spent a good deal of time at Juvenile Detention Facilities on 1605 Eastlake Avenue and Las Palmas school for girls (now the Dorothy Kirby Center) at 1500 S. McDonnell Avenue in L. A.

The Temple of Good Things, 2022 Purdue Avenue was a head shop and she used to like the blacklight section there, however they moved from the location that they used to be at when she was a regular. Also next to Danny’s Liquor 6830 La Tijera Boulevard is a 99 cent store where there used to be a head shop that also had a blacklight section, unfortunately she got arrested there so it’s a bitter sweet memory! (Same thing at the Zody’s on Slauson, at least where it used to be! It’s a K-Mart now I am told.)

The Westchester girls said they used to cruise Manchester looking for boys and hang out at Manchester and Lincoln Boulevards hoping to meet the college boys. And that Anissa was good at cruising although she was really er’ frugal!

Finally the infamous addresses, Dr. Moshos 1617 Cravens Avenue Torrance (where she got the ‘reds’) and 2312 Littler Lane Oceanside (the Hennessy residence where she died.) Same caution here though, the original owners are gone, so I wouldn’t bother anyone!

Don’t worry about copying all of the addresses, I have some Yahoo maps with all of them marked for you, just e-mail me at swtechaz@yahoo.com and I’ll fire them off for you! (Just take lots of pics for us!)

With some respect, you can have a good time and walk those footsteps and maybe even find an inscription or two in the cement on Trolleyway or Montreal or even Rees (if they are still there.)

Note: you can visit Brian Keith and his Daughter Daisy (and Sebastian for that matter,) by looking them up at http://www.findagrave.com/
