Uniform type/designation? (pic post)

Hello folks,
I am hoping to replicate this scene with Revell's Heinkel and an old Airfix multipose US Infantry figure. I've noticed these figures do not quite confirm to this gentleman so I was hoping some of you could identify the uniform type and any details that might be of use such as boot types and such. The pic description puts this in 1944 in Strassburg Germany if that helps. Also, what exactly is his left arm leaning on - an open pistol holster? Many thanks for anything you gents could come up with!
