Tractors

If this is the kit you have... its a 15cm gun not 10.5cm. They are different weapons. Dragon also makes an excellent 15cm gun and AFV Club make several nice 10.5cm guns.

The 15cm/150mm gun was towed by the SdKfz 7 tractor. Tamiya has an old, poor kit of it, and Trumpeter has a decent version. This is the Trumpeter kit

Dragon has an SdKfz 7 in the works too, but they are releasing the anti-aircraft gun carriers before they release the tractor.

German medium and heavy field guns were towed by horse teams throughout the war, although later war guns were more often mechanized. Sometimes horse drawn guns will have different wheels, and a limber or caisson is sometimes used.

Be careful with the Trumpeter kit, it builds half way into the firing position and half way into the towed position without minor work to make it one way or the other.

K18 10.5cm gun isn't 15cm Howitzer sFH18

August 6 2009, 6:54 AM

Hi David: Trumpeter and DML released both heavy arty pieces, the sFH 18 15cm howitzer and the K18 10cm gun.

The OP said he got the K18 10cm gun, which, by the way, was in the same weight class as the sFH 18 15cm howitzer so was similarily towed by the SdKfz 7 tractors.

Both weapons were considered heavy field artillery. The K18 had the extra role of counter battery fire on enemy artillery positions. Its flatter trajectory capacity allowed it to zero in on enemy guns quicker than other weapons (or so I read).

I can't keep up w/the new kits. I thought it'd be a logical step from their sFH18 15cm. Oh well. My bad
