Response to Ship painting question

Phil,
I'm normally an aircraft builder, but I just finished the Hasegawa 1/350th Mutsu and that kit taught me to paint in stages. I assembled the hull with the main and quarterdecks and painted that the hull color. At the same time, after assembling portions of the next deck levels and superstructure, I painted those assemblies individually. I then masked and painted the wood decks. Because some of the upper deck levels had wood decks, I had to paint those portions of the superstructure before they were assembled. I assembled all the component units after painting, only touching up where necessary. It was much easier that way. It also made the main deck painting much easier, too. The Mutsu fit together pretty well, which made working this way practical.

The complexity of your kit will determine which way is easiest for you, but in my case, there was no question.

Good luck with your build.

Bill
