Response to how to build this logistic ship?
There were two primary types of tankers in use by the USN during the war - the T-2 and the T-3, slightly larger.

The T-2 is avaiable in kit form in 1/700 from Loose Cannon (http://home.earthlink.net/~loosecannonproductions/Kit12.html) and a larger, older kit from Revell, boxed as the USS Mission Capistrano, presently out of production, but still available here and there.
