Response to Triple Gun Turrets for World War II battleships/cruisers

Hi Chip,

There were few Japanese ships that had five triple turrets.

The four ships of the Mogami class (Mogami, Mikuima, Kumano, and Suzuya) were designed and launched with a main armament of five triple 15.5cm (6 inch) turrets. They were converted to five twin 20cm (8 inch) turrets during the Third Efficiency Improvement Works rebuild starting in 1939.

Mogami had her aft twin 20cm turrets removed in 1943 to extend her aircraft deck to the stern during her conversion to an Aircraft Cruiser.

As per Charles reply, the Brooklyn and ST. Louis Classes had five triple 6 inch turrets:

CL-40 Brooklyn, CL-41 Philadelphia, CL-42 Savannah, CL-43 Nashville, CL-46 Phoenix, CL-47 Boise, CL-48 Honolulu, CL-49 ST. Louis, CL-50 Helena.

There were no IJN or USN battleships with five triple turrets.

Regards,

Vance
