Response to Heavy Rolls

Bronstein was the first of a new generation of DE's, the first escorts with the large bow-mounted SQS-26 Sonar. The dome was over scale for the hull, and the class--only two ships, Benny B and USS McCloy (DE/FF-1038)--were notorious for poor sea keeping. They were also slow, and having a single screw, not very maneuverable. They were too slow to serve in carrier groups, and in their later lives served as testbeds for the new Towed Anti-Submarine Surveillance (TASS) System, replacing the after 3"/50cal Mk 33 gun, which tended to jam anyway.

I always thought Bainbridge was a handsome ship. I never knew she rode so poorly.

Regards,
Bruce
