Building model ships is a weird way to find old friends.

I got a phone call yesterday from an old friend/co-worker I hadn't seen or heard from in close to 40 years! He happened to pick up a Fine Scale Magazine to see what was happening in the plastic field since he's been doing model railroading for the last 20 years. He noticed a ship review with my name tagged to it. He figured there couldn't be that many guys with a name like that in the world (there aren't. Since my father died in 2001 I'm the only one). He did some digging and found my bio which listed Kenosha as my home. He grabs the phone book and there I am. So he calls and we spend two hours reliving building hundreds of Bandi 1/48 kits. Entire units of Tigers with correct numbers and insignia, things like that.

We live about 6 miles apart. I'm retired and disabled with a broken back and destroyed right shoulder. He's retired with MS. I took a job at Twin Disc in Racine about 10 years ago in the research department. I was replacing him apparently when he had to retire! I never knew it. Our paths have probably crossed 100 times but we never met face to face.

A very strange way to restart an old friendship!
