Who supplies chain for 1/350th and 1/700th scale WW1 and Modern ships and are there particular bands that are recommended above others?

Gold Medal Models, Toms, and the other similar suspects supply very nice etched anchors with chain which is in scale, but sorta one dimensional.

45 LPI HO scale model railroad chain by Campbell is often used in 1:350 scale for cruiser & above sized projects. I prefer Tiger Models extra-fine chain for destroyer & below sized projects in 1:350 scale.

The Tiger looks okay on 1:700 scale heavyweights, where the use of the HO chain is way too heavy (IMO).

Some have recommended cheap costume jewelry chain, but it looks like cheap costume jewelry.

Studded chain

Anchor chain was usually studded - that is there was a bar welded between the two sides of the individual links

I don't know anyone who makes this in a small scale and if you really want total accuracy then you'll probably have to make your own from very small pieces of wire and will end up wishing you had taken up stamp collecting instead.

If you're willing to compromise and use plain chain then you can buy chain as fine as .2mm pitch  - for example see www.hlj.com/product/FLG40174
